What are the best hiking options? We compared various commercially available behavioural foods

What do you do to take action?

As the name suggests, behavioral food is food that "eats while you are active" such as hiking. It's quickly put in your mouth, so don't you think too much about what you're going to bring with you?

When I first started climbing,

"It has calories, sweet, salty, lasts for a long time, and does not rot"

Just keep this in mind, I prepared a standard food that includes trail mix, chocolate, persimmon pea, salted candy and energy bar. In the end, all I actually ate was Kakimei and candy, and the rest of the food often turned into just a baggage.

Why? Because I'm a beginner, I've been stuck to the classics and couldn't choose what I found "delicious" or something that motivated me.

Trial and error food

So, after realising that, I tried out all sorts of things every time I climbed. For example, a cereal bar in the summer mountains. I'm tired and have no appetite. Even if you try to eat it, the water in your mouth will be taken away and it won't pass through your throat. Energy jelly in the winter mountains. The jelly is too cold, making my body even colder. Do you want to make it yourself? I want to avoid the hassle of saving as much as possible, and I would like to eat something commercially available if possible.

That's how I finally managed to find my own criteria for choosing a diet that I am doing. The trial and error conclusion is

That's what it was. It's an endless journey where you'll find the perfect choice at any time, and the fun of choosing snacks for an excursion is the charm of looking for a foodie.

So this time, I'll be introducing recommended behavioral foods in one go, including the latest "My Best Action Foods" I've come across in my own way, as well as the latest highly functional behavioral foods and unexpected products that I've finally come across.

Perfect for nutritional supplements while hiking! ? My Best & Latest Recommended Behavior Foods

Taking into account the previous conclusion of the trial and error behavioral diet, I would like to introduce my recommended behavioral diet. This is what I think is "delicious and easy to eat," "like," and "perfect for hiking." There are probably opinions such as, "That's right," and "That's not true," but I hope that you will use this as a starting point to become interested in finding your own "My Best Action Food." We will also be sharing information about products that can be purchased online and at outdoor shops, such as "Is there such a food that could be eaten?"

Japanese sweets... Rolled dora (rolled dorayaki)

Japanese sweets are characterized by their high sugar content, but they are surprisingly high in calories despite their small amounts. Japanese sweets are one where you can eat deliciously regardless of the season.

Among them, my best is Makidora from Hikagechaya in Hayama, Kanagawa Prefecture. The dough is sweet, moist and chewy, and contains a chopped bean paste filled with adzuki beans that have a squishy texture. Another point is that it is stick-shaped and small, so you can eat it in one bite. Anyway, it's delicious. Of course, regular Dorayaki, which is also sold at convenience stores, is enough. (HP)

Recently popular Japanese sweets-based behavioural food 1: ENEMOTI

A veneer I found at an outdoor shop. This is a thin, long, thin rice cake wrapped in oblate to prevent your hands from sticking. The texture is chewy and has a nostalgic taste of syrup and walnuts. A little sweet. (HP)

Recently popular Japanese sweets-type food 2: "Kurumiko"

There is a store in Kamakura, so many people buy it before and after the Kamakura Trail. The taste is like eating raw caramel, full of walnuts. Although it is small, it is packed with contents so you can enjoy it with plenty of room. If you order online, they will sell out quickly, but it appears that you can get it if you visit around 10am. (HP)

Chocolate...Alfort

Chocolate-based products are recommended as the sugar contained in chocolate quickly transforms into energy and gives your tired body a energizing effect. Chocolate is easy to get anywhere, and there is a wide variety of chocolates, so it's a great item that allows you to choose your own taste.

My Best is "Alfort", a well-known ship, marked by the familiar ship. It's not too boring if you just biscuits. Chocolate alone is not enough. Alfort responds to my selfishness. Another great thing is that you can choose the flavors such as strawberries, matcha, and kinako. It's also worth noting that it's high in calories, at about 53kcal per piece.

Snack type... hard-fed potatoes

The good thing about snacks. It's salty. It's high in calories. It's always delicious! The exquisite taste of salt and oil leads to motivation.
It's understandable that professional adventure racer Tanaka Yoki is a favorite.

"Kentaage Potato" The light flavor is salty and firm. The crunchy texture stimulates your tired head and body. Calbee also swears that it's "the bite is so delicious," but the more chewed it, the more delicious the more delicious the more it bites it.
It will take as is, so even if you crush it to a certain extent and it is smaller, the best thing to do is that it will stay delicious without changing the texture.

Snack type... plum stew wakame

The snack type is a dish that will give you punch and nourish your tired body on mountain paths.

My punch is 7-Eleven's "Umestem Wakame." I can't eat a lot, so I'm grateful that they sell small bags.
The smooth throat feel and the sweet and sour taste of plum vinegar and honey are good. It satisfies the desire to eat sour foods that appear when you are tired.

Ramune, candy, gummy...Cola up

Ramune, candy, and gummy types are easy to hide in shells, hip belt pockets, sacoche, etc., and are easy to put in your mouth. It has a wide variety, almost carbohydrate, and is an essential item for eating foods that is essential for eating.

I want to drink some cola on the way, but it's heavy so I can't carry it with me... Cola Up gummies fulfill this desire for cola. As I was eating a slurp, I was filled with cola flavor in my mouth and my mood returned to my heart's content.

To be honest, it's just delicious and I still want to try hard. It's my partner.

Stick-shaped syrup has been developed and commercialized for activities such as mountain climbing and trail running. The raw material, maltose, is absorbed slowly by the body compared to glucose, so it has a longer energy retention power. Just to be honest, it has a nostalgic taste of syrup. Since it is packaged, it won't take up much space even if you put it in your pocket. (HP)

Recently notable ramune, candy, gummy-type behavioural food ④: Jamuya's gel

This jam is made into gel for activities by a store that produces and sells jam. The owner's hobby is trail running, and we commercialized it by applying jam techniques to replenish supplies during sports. It has a strong juice flavor, and is not too sweet and refreshing. Even jam is a smooth gel-like jam, making it easy to eat, making it perfect for when you don't have an appetite. (HP)

Nuts and dried fruit...Caramel almond

Needless to say, "nuts" are a classic food for behavioral food. It has a high calorie content and is easy to buy anywhere, so many people probably clean up their behavioural food.

I was thinking, "I'm tired of salty nuts...", and when I saw 7-Eleven's "Caramel Almonds" came out. Honestly it's tasty. The salty and caramel flavor are nice. It also has a zipper, so it's nice to have some tricks (although I end up eating one bag all at once).

Recently notable nuts and dried fruits-based foods 1: "Bombay Trail Mix"

Recently featured nuts and dried fruits-based foods ④: REDFARM's granola

Granola made at Yatsugatake is free of additives, preservatives, or white sugar. I had the caramel banana flavor. It has a natural sweetness, and the flavor is accented with cashew nuts and banana chips, making it delicious. It looks like it's filling well. (HP)

Recently notable nuts and dried fruits-based foods ⑤: Trail butter

A paste-like energy food based on nuts such as almonds and coconut oil. It is characterized by low carbohydrates, high lipids, all-natural and gluten-free, and is high in calories at 760 kcal per bag (128g).

I had maple syrup and sea salt. It tastes like peanut butter with lots of nuts (I don't actually use peanuts). It has a salty taste and is delicious even if you don't have to put it on anything. However, be careful not to consume too many calories due to eating too many. (HP)

Jelly type... Minute Maid Plump Qoo

There are times when you are exhausted and don't want to eat anything. Especially in the summer. This is where jelly types come in handy. It is not solid, so it has good throatiness, good nutrition, and good moisture content. A perfect jelly type with all three characteristics. It's also good to freeze it and bring it with you.

Well, I don't like the energy drink flavors. After trying out various jelly drinks, I finally arrived at the "PurunpurunQoo," a jelly drink for children. Don't underestimate it if it's for children. It's quite high specs.

Contains calcium, iron and vitamin D. There are also apples, grapes, mandarin oranges, and peaches, so you won't get bored of them because there are a wide variety of flavors. What's more, it contains 20% to 40% fruit juice, so it's very juicy. It's delicious even if it's not cold.

Bread-style...Pasco's snack bread with chocolate chips

Bread-style is also a representative player for active food. This is a fun food that is perfect for the mountains, as it is high in calories, light, wide variety, and easy to eat.

My favorite is Pasco's "Snack Bread." The concept of snack bread is "bread that melts in your mouth and lasts a long time." It has a moist and soft mouthfeel, so it does not take away any moisture from your mouth. Don't dry or fluff. This is an important point when choosing bread for your behaviour.

It also contains chocolate chips and is made from yeast food. What a nice thing. The bear's fairy tale paintings also add to the feeling of climbing.

Recently popular bread-based foods 1: Usuyaki Cafe Mame

We make "Usuyaki," a local dish of Shinshu, using a variety of ingredients, and create a modern twist. The store is located in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, and uses local flour and local vegetables. It also has a wide variety of ingredients, including flower beans, persimmons, Nozawana, cherry blossom leaves, and persimmons. It is located near Matsumoto Station, so many people buy it before and after climbing.

This time I ate burdock, sweet potato and persimmon flavor. The ingredients have a strong flavor and the natural sweetness is delicious. It's chewy, filling and filling. (HP)

High energy food

As you know, climbing mountains consumes a lot of energy. Of course, you need to replenish your energy before climbing, and if you don't eat a regular diet, you'll end up lacking energy, or what you mean by "sharibate."

There is a limit to the amount of luggage you can carry, so I have never put too much effort into eating food. This means that high-energy food, which allows you to consume a large amount of energy at once in a small amount, is suitable for mountain climbing.

Get the nutrients needed for mountain climbing

The nutrients we need for our survival are the five major nutrients: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, vitamins and minerals. A brief explanation of the roles of each nutrient is

However, it is quite difficult to balance these nutrients while climbing. As I mentioned earlier about Sharibate, Sharibate occurs due to a lack of carbohydrates. Carbohydrates can produce 4kcal of energy in 1g, but they do not last long. However, 1g of fat is high in calories, at 9kcal, so it can store energy compared to carbohydrates.

While climbing, you actively consume carbohydrates and lipids, which are the driving forces, and supplement the minerals (sodium and potassium) that are lost when you sweat, with sports drinks. Proteins, vitamins, minerals, etc. are supplemented with easy-to-digested foods such as meals before climbing or jelly drinks just after descending the mountain. This will allow you to get relatively balanced nutrients and allow you to climb mountains that are less strained on your body.

It's good to be full

It is important to take a behavioural diet frequently. However, I can't keep taking breaks. There may be times when you want to climb to the summit all at once, and there may be times when you don't have time. For these situations, a filling, moving food is useful.

Generally, "brown rice > white rice > whole wheat bread > bread" is a good thing that's filling, but because it's too filling = slow digestion, it requires energy to digest, which can affect your behavior.

However, there is no need to worry too much, chewing well, choosing as soft as possible, and eating in small portions will reduce the burden on the stomach and intestines and on your actions.

What's delicious

This is probably the best priority. I feel tired and I can't get any appetite if I keep walking. But if you don't eat it, you'll get tired. When I say, "I'm tired right now, so I won't eat," I run out of gas in no time.

When you're feeling tired, isn't it something you find yourself thinking, "It's delicious!"? Have you ever been motivated by "favorite behavioral diet"? Being able to "want to eat" in harsh conditions is important when replenishing energy.

It is best to bring your favorite standard behavioural food, but the taste at the moment will change depending on your physical condition and level of fatigue. To achieve this, it's a good idea to prepare a behavioural meal that is a balanced combination of one of the elements that make it "delicious".

For example, there are many different flavors, such as sweetness - karinto, sourness - sour gummy, saltiness - potato chips, bitterness - dark chocolate, umami - kelp, etc. Another key point is to choose foods that are easy to pass through your throat.

Light and bulky

As I mentioned in the high-energy food section, the lighter and smaller amount of luggage is best. Foods that contain water are heavy, so it's best to make an effort to bring just half of them. In addition, keeping food packaging as compact as possible will help reduce the weight of your luggage, such as peeling off food packaging and putting it together in a ziplock bag, and crushing rice crackers and potato chips.

It has a conservation ability

Have you ever had a smell like a rice ball that smells sour or a strange smell from a sandwich? That's exactly what it is rotten.
Food rots as the number of microorganisms increases, and microorganisms increase when a certain high temperature, moisture, and oxygen is present.

It's so sad that when you try to eat the food you've prepared for, it's rotten. To prevent this from happening,

That's important.

Matsubara Mitsuoko

These days, I'm still curious about the northern world, such as Iceland and Alaska. However, if possible, I would also like to dive into the seas of the Galapagos Islands. This is the sixth year since I started to explore Japan's 100 most famous mountains, visiting places I want to see before I die. I climb mountains all over the country using Hiraide model shoes (shoes chosen by alpine climber Hiraide Kazuya). I'm an Osakan who loves craft beer and yogurt.
