I won't say it's a colour anymore. 7 reasons why I decided to move my spring, summer and autumn sleeping bags to a quilted type and two recommended models

When it comes to sleeping bags that are suitable for mountain climbing, there is no doubt that a mummy-shaped sleeping bag that is cut into the body and covers the head is still a solid choice. However, in recent years, simple, lightweight, compact quilted sleeping bags have been introduced, and they have gradually become popular, especially in the world of ultralight hiking.

This new sleeping bag has only refined the bare minimum required functions, making it even more convenient if used in a suitable situation. However, until recently, I was aware that it was a gear that would be chosen to use, as it pursues light weight so much that it would endure the comfort of sleeping and limit the seasons that can be used.

However, after looking into the recent market for quilted sleeping bags, I actually got a few more and tried out a few more, and was surprised at how unexpectedly it was comfortable and versatile. It has become clear that this perception is already a thing of the past.

So, this time we'll focus on quilted sleeping bags that are becoming easier to use, and introduce the advantages, disadvantages, and recommended models.

What is a quilted sleeping bag? ~What's the difference between a mommy type?

The most important thing about the quilted sleeping bags is that they are very different when compared to traditional mummy sleeping bags. The mummy-shaped futon does not distort the body even if the zipper is fully opened, while the quilt-shaped quilt is basically a simple piece of literal futon, and there is no hood to cover the head or a zipper to close the sleeping bag. Sleeping in a quilt is simply like sleeping on a quilt, just like everyday life. Why is it so exciting that it is not the ideal shape that has been achieved through the long history of mountain climbing, but rather the shape that has returned to the prototype of a sleeping bag?

The background to this is deeply related to the minimalist philosophy of "cutting off the extra parts (functions) and making it simpler" of Ultralight Hiking, which has created modern quilt types, and the equipment situation caused by modern technological advances.

First of all, the padding, which plays an important role in the heat retention of a sleeping bag, is useless if it cannot contain air. In other words, the padding between the ground and the sleeping bag, which is normally crushed by its own weight, can be said to be an "unnecessary part." Furthermore, the sleeping pads are so warm and comfortable that they are incomparable to the past that they are now able to block out the cold air from the ground. With this in mind, I first drastically omitted the part that touches the back of the sleeping bag for the quilted type (some models sometimes close the feet to prevent too much heat from being dissipated). The open part is made by using elastic cords and drawcords to hold the sleeping bag close to the pads to prevent cold air from entering through the omitted back.

We also pay attention to the fact that many hikers carry high-performance hooded insulation and down jackets as winter clothing. On ultralight hikes that were not originally intended for use in extreme environments such as the Alps and Himalayas during the harsh winter, it was probably possible to calculate that even if it was cold, wearing winter clothes and hoods would prevent the cold, including the head. In this way, the hood part of the head has also been omitted (some manufacturers may have optional hoods that can be installed).

In this way, after reviewing only the parts that we essentially needed, we came to the shape of a quilt.

7 reasons why you can use a quilted sleeping bag

1. Light

As you can see from the previous explanation, the first advantage of the quilted type, which eliminates excess parts such as the back and hood, is that it is more likely to be lighter than a mummy sleeping bag with the same limit temperature. It's not necessarily a simple comparison, but for example, if you compare it with the 2016 catalog of SEA TO SUMMIT, the basic mummy model's Latitude Lt I (750FP, lower limit -4°C) weighs 880g, while the quilt model's Amber Eb II (750FP, lower limit -4°C) weighs 560g, making it a whopping 35% lighter.

2. Compact

The quilted shape and the back and hood are omitted, which also helps make your luggage more compact. However, in terms of storage, it seems even more important that the zippers and drawstrings have been eliminated along with these. Everyone feels that when storing sleeping bags and rain gear, zippers can be surprisingly difficult to store when rolling up small. With the lack of a hard zipper, you can see how easy it is to store it in a very clear way.

3. Easy to adjust the temperature

In the case of the mummy type, many people have probably experienced bringing a sleeping bag for three seasons in the summer and ending up being too hot. That's why there's a thin summer sleeping bag, but if you have a quilted type for three seasons, there's no need to buy more. The mummy type can be adjusted to improve sealing and heat retention efficiency, but most models find it difficult to reverse. On the other hand, as you can see, the quilted type is just a futon, so you can freely move it in close contact with your body, increase ventilation, or extend your legs. Knowing this convenience and versatility, I realized that the quilted-shaped bag is truly the perfect sleeping bag for three seasons, allowing you to stay comfortable from chilly seasons to the height of summer.

4. Warm enough

Because of its structure, quilted sleeping bags are not possible to completely seal them, so it is generally said that they are not suitable for cold seasons due to the cold air that enters through the gaps, so personally I thought it was a tool that is mainly used in warm seasons, mainly in the summer. It seems that many of the lineup on sale were models above 0°C.

It is true that the logic is still true, and no matter how hard you try, it is inferior to that of a mummy type in terms of sealing and heat retention efficiency. However, recent quilted sleeping bags use plenty of high-quality down padding, and many models have been created with various ingenuity to prevent cold air from entering, and in addition, the quilted sleeping bags have also left room for even greater comfort by the performance of the sleeping pads placed underneath and what they are worn on the head. Due to these circumstances, it is now possible to use a quilted sleeping bag, even during snowy seasons, depending on how you try it.

Highland Designs TOP QUILT, which is designed to prevent cold air from escaping from the neck, has snap buttons and drawcords that allow the collar to be securely closed, improving sealing.

5. Comfortable sleeping

Looking at the comfort of your sleeping bag, the quilted style, which is not much different from sleeping on a futon, is easier to move your body than the mummy style that envelops the entire body, and is easier to enter and exit from the sleeping bag, making it easier to sleep in and out of the sleeping bag, giving you a more natural sleeping comfort. Also, as mentioned in part, it was difficult to turn over in bed, if the pads and sleeping bag were firmly fixed, the quilt would not slip when turning over, and in fact, the position of the pads and quilt was stable, making it more comfortable.

6. No need to worry about zippers

The lack of a zipper will help you avoid any opening and closing problems, such as the zipper stopping or worrying about damage caused by the fabric being bitten. However, even though it has become simpler, you will need to take care of the elastic bands and drawcords to secure the pads and sleeping bags.

7. Affordable price

Despite this advantage, quilted models are generally available at a relatively affordable price compared to similar-level mummy sleeping bags. In the example in the SEA TO SUMMIT 2016 catalog earlier, the basic mummy model Latitude Lt I (lower limit -4℃) is 54,000 yen excluding tax, while the quilt model Amber Eb II (lower limit -4℃) is 40,000 yen. However, it is a shame that there are few Japanese-made models, so it is difficult to see how cheap it is from Japan.

Things to note when choosing a quilted sleeping bag

This quilted sleeping bag is packed with attractive features, but even so, it's not without any issues that bother you at all. You need to be aware of the following points:

1. It takes time to set up

Aside from the fact that you want to use it in a comfortable summer, in order to block out cold air from outside with a quilt-shaped sleeping bag, you must ensure that the pads and sleeping bag are firmly fixed in place to prevent gaps at both ends of the quilt. There are various ways to fix this method depending on the model, but it generally takes time to tie it together using a strap, drawstring, or elastic string, and it can be a bit troublesome in areas where you don't just slip your body into the sleeping bag like a mummy type (in some cases, models with ropes and elastic strings sold separately). However, once you know how to do it, it's not a very laborious task unless there's a lot of work to do it, and once you get used to it, it's not a problem.

2. Waterproof care

I realized that the structure that is tied to the pad as mentioned above means that there is a problem that the existing waterproof sleeping bag cover cannot be covered in the same condition. However, this does not mean that the outer fabric of a quilted sleeping bag is particularly waterproof and water-repellent. I imagine that in North America, where there is less concern about rain, there is no custom of always using backpack covers, so rain is probably not being given that much consideration.

I checked with a shop that sells quilted sleeping bags to deal with waterproofing, and found that depending on the size of the pad, you can either forcefully cover the pads, or to attach a cover, separate it from the pads and put it in a normal sleeping bag and cover it. The rest is a bit rough, but with a sleeping bag made of synthetic fiber padded, the heat retention is not easily reduced even if it gets a little wet, so I guess I'll put that into consideration and endure it without covering it. In any case, it is undeniable that each person is left to ingenuity when it comes to waterproof care.

Recommended quilted sleeping bags

So far, we have explained the advantages and disadvantages of a typical quilted sleeping bag, but from here onwards we will introduce some recommended models that we have actually purchased and tried out.

Enlightened Equipment Revelation

First, I would like to introduce a sleeping bag brand specializing in quilts, launched in 2006 in Minnesota, USA. Yes, this model can only be obtained from the beginning by personal imports.

Naturally, I've picked out a model with such a high hurdle, because this item is incredibly amazing, and Revelation and obtained it. I've written about the benefits of quilted sleeping bags, but to be honest, if I hadn't come across this item, I might not have thought about putting this article together. That's how special it is.

What's amazing? First of all, the basic premise is that this brand is crucially different from all other brands, that all lineups can be customized to suit your body shape and preferences .

The constant worry when choosing a sleeping bag is that you can only choose from a certain specs that the manufacturer has in mind. I really love the quality and functionality of the down! Have you ever been reluctant to find a model that's not in the right temperature range for you, or the weight isn't the right fit, or if you add a water-repellent function, it's perfect? I'm often.

In order to choose the most suitable model, proper sizing is very important for heat retention efficiency and comfort. Also, the required heat retention and acceptable weight vary depending on the season and purpose you are targeting. Basically, there is an inconvenience that only orders online are required, and it takes at least a month to ship (in my case, it took me two and a half months from order to ship...), but even taking that into consideration, the benefits of being able to custom order a sleeping bag is immeasurable. This is really bad regardless of the quilt type.

It's simple and easy to understand from choosing the specs to ordering.

Ordering starts with choosing the base series. Among the quilted shapes, you can choose between synthetic fiber or down padding, and you can choose whether the toes are pre-closed to improve heat retention. The Rvelation series we recommend this time is the most versatile and easy to use model, as it uses down with high heat retention while also fully open to adjust breathability.

When you actually open the product page, you will see a selection as shown in the screen above. You can freely choose one at a time from here and the customization will be completed in no time.

To add to this from the top, the lowest down is 850FP (European duck or goose down), which is quite high quality. Furthermore, all classes are water-repellent. Of course, the higher the quality, the lighter the sleeping bag.

The estimated lower limit temperature is a brand's unique indicator and is merely a guideline, but according to the website it is supposed to be close to the lower limit temperature of the EN13537 standard (see " How to Choose the Optimal Sleeping Bag " for more information about EN13537). Naturally, specifying the temperature as low will increase the amount of down sealed and the weight will increase.

Both length and width are expressed in feet and inches. In the case of quilted-type models, the length is the length minus the head to neck from the height, but if you measure it properly from the neck to the bottom, it may mean that there is no room for the feet at all, and if it is too short, it will not only reduce the heat retention of the feet, but you will not be able to play around the neck. In that sense, it's safest to be as long as you are. As for the width, the regular size is basically fine, but the site says that a slightly wider size will be more satisfying for people who turn over in bed a lot or especially those who like sleeping on their sides.

The last option is whether to use 20D weather-resistant fabric on the top and bottom tips as an option, and I'm just so grateful for this. Those of us living in Japan should make sure to make a choice. In a humid environment like in Japan, condensation inside the tent can be done quickly due to slight differences in temperature. However, when you sleep, the tip of your sleeping bag usually sticks to the inner wall of your tent, so even if it's sunny, there is a risk of your feet getting wet while you're sleeping. This model is also of great importance because it has such detailed but important features.

Thermal insulation performance close to the mummy type and high functionality that is fully functional

When you set the sleeping bag on the pads, it looks almost the same as a mummy type, and there is no sense of a clear gap in reality. Despite this, it is easy to enter and exit the sleeping bag like a quilt, and it feels like sleeping with a down comforter hanging over a futon called a sleeping pad.

When you turn it over, it looks like this. There are only two fixed points. The straps are made of elastic flat rubber, and both ends have buckles, making them easy to install.

The Rvelation 's neck has snap buttons and drawcords, and the drawcords and short zippers make it very solid and prevents cold air from entering. Incidentally, the steel gray colored part uses 20D fabric that is resistant to water.

Using high-quality fabrics and padding that are carefully conscious of wetting, Revelation the cold and heat, making it a reliable ally, compact and provides maximum comfort for a variety of activities, including hiking and climbing in spring and autumn, canoeing, kayaking, and motorcycle travel. Coincidentally, if you're interested in the first time the yen has risen in several years, we recommend that you try it out (although it is natural that shipping costs, duties, consumption tax, handling fees, etc. will be incurred in the price, and guarantees and after-sales service will be provided in English, so you will need to act at your own risk).

Highland Designs TOP QUILT

There are only a few Japanese quilted sleeping bags, but each one is well made. Among them, the synthetic quilted sleeping bags are made from the original brand of the outdoor shop "Hiker's depot" in Mitaka, a sacred place for ultralight hiking enthusiasts across the country, and are a representative quilted model in Japan, which has been steadily improving since 2009. At first glance, the construction is very simple, but from the selection of materials to individual functions, the highly humid Japanese summer environment takes into consideration the humid Japanese summer environment, and from that point to its stunning concept and spirit, it shows the perfect balance between weight, heat retention and functionality, and is truly impressive.

It is certainly impressive that despite its synthetic fiber, its lightness and storage capacity, and most importantly, it has sufficient heat retention in most places in the summer. It's difficult to put into words, but perhaps because he was being deceived by his fluttering appearance, when I went inside, I first came to think that he was "surprisingly warm."

The material is highly airtight and heat-retaining, and its structure does not let heat escape, providing high heat retention while still being lightweight.

This can be said to be the result of not only choosing the material called PrimaLoft® Gold Insulation with Cross Core™, but also by adding fine adjustments such as a dense 15D surface fabric and fewer seams and not opening the foot area. And although I haven't tried this yet, according to the product description, it can be combined with a down sleeping bag in winter to increase the heat retention, so if you have this sleeping bag and a three-season sleeping bag, you can efficiently make it for four seasons. If I were to be greedy, I would have liked the loop on the back to be pre-attached with elastic or a buckle that was easy to remove, but somehow the advantage of being able to bring out the most easily heat-retaining power this time is that it has the charm of being able to pick it up. As it is relatively affordable in terms of price, choosing this product will be more efficient and useful in a wide range of situations than buying a summer sleeping bag at the same time.

summary

It has been around more than 10 years since quilted sleeping bags began to be established as a genre. The age of colourful positioning that has been useful in the core situation up until then has passed, and footsteps of the era where you can choose the most suitable model for a variety of needs can be seen in a keen sense of footsteps. Personally, I'm sure the two models introduced are a hit, but there are still many other interesting models, mainly from authentic American garage manufacturers. However, in Japan, foreign sleeping bags tend to be difficult to distribute, making them difficult to obtain. However, this category is currently the most innovative and inventive in the world of fairly mature sleeping bags. Let's look forward to seeing how it will continue to evolve in the future, including the situation overseas.
