A lightweight and streamlined silhouette that you'll want to wear every day: SALOMON JP Wayfarer Tapered Buckle Pants Review

SALOMON is a well-known top brand for running shoes and trail running gear, but what may not be widely known is that they also offer unique, high-quality products in the outdoor apparel field

Among the many outdoor wear brands from SALOMON that are known only to those in the know, the trekking pants I've been using for over five years are the WAYFARER series that I'll be introducing today. This series has steadily gained popularity since then, and has now grown into the brand's standard trekking pants series, with a wide variety of models available to suit various situations.

This time, I had the opportunity to try out the tapered fit JP Wayfarer Tapered Buckle Pants, which has been newly added to the lineup this season, so I would like to review them right away

Key Features of the SALOMON JP Wayfarer Tapered Buckle Pants

These tapered-fit trekking pants are a new addition to Salomon's popular WAYFARER trekking pants series. They feature a Japan fit tailored to the typical Japanese body type. The beautiful tapered silhouette, shaped toward the hem, combines a comfortable fit with a flattering silhouette. The lining is soft against the skin, and the outer fabric is made of a thin softshell material with a DWR (durable water repellent) finish. Its four-way stretch provides high flexibility, ensuring a slim fit without feeling too tight or restrictive. Pockets include zippered hand pockets on both sides, as well as zippered hip pockets, making them ideal for outdoor activities. A buckled belt is also included as standard. These versatile pants are not only comfortable and functional for trekking, but also make you want to wear them around town thanks to their silhouette and comfort

Detailed Review

A silhouette and comfort that makes you want to wear it every day, not just outdoors

One of the main reasons I was drawn to the WAYFARER series is its sophisticated silhouette, which is unusual for trekking pants. It's true that pants from European brands tend to be generally slim and straight, but WAYFARER's stylish straight silhouette stands out among them, slimming and flattering the body line

While continuing the good taste of previous models, this latest model is tapered towards the hem, a trend that has become popular recently. While still maintaining a beautiful leg silhouette, the moderate amount of room around the hips and thighs provides a comfortable fit that is not possible with straight pants

What's more, this latest model is the long-awaited Japan Fit model, tailored to the modern Japanese body type. More users than ever before will be able to experience the light, clean, and streamlined silhouette

The lining is smooth and dry to the touch, so you won't have to worry about chafing

The outer fabric is treated with DWR (durable water repellent), so you don't have to worry about light rain or dirt. What's more, the water-repellent treatment is PFC-free, making it environmentally friendly and of a high quality

Stress-free and outstanding ease of movement without getting in the way

While you might be able to tolerate a little tightness when just walking normally, swinging your legs up and down is a common occurrence when hiking on uneven ground and slopes. For this reason, ease of movement and comfort during activity are particularly important factors for trekking pants used for long hikes involving a lot of movement, and it can be said that these pants meet almost all of the requirements for actual hiking in a well-balanced and high level

The medium size is lightweight at 268g, and the thin soft shell material has high elasticity with 4-way stretch, so there is no feeling of tightness when worn

In the summer, when you bend your knees a lot, the sweaty fabric catches on your skin, which can be very uncomfortable and stressful, but even in such situations, this super stretch material prevents any unnecessary tightness

The pants have a three-dimensional cut with a gusseted crotch (see photo below), so even if you spread your legs about 180 degrees, there will be no tightness or discomfort in the crotch

You can easily lift your legs up on rocky surfaces without any hesitation

The tapered silhouette that is shaped towards the hem means that the fabric doesn't flap around the ankles, allowing for safe and light walking (photo below)

The fabric is thin and has just enough breathability to be used throughout the mild spring and autumn seasons, rather than just in the middle of summer. The left and right pockets are mesh (see photo below), which acts as ventilation to let out stuffiness when you sweat a lot

Convenient pockets without compromising the smart design

When trying to create a sleek design, you might want to keep pockets to a minimum, but these pants have pockets on both the front and hips (see photo below). What's more, they are all zippered pockets, ensuring safety and preventing items from falling out while you're on the move

Also, unlike other models in the WAYFARER series, the waist has an adjustable belt with an integrated buckle (see photo below), making it more beginner-friendly and convenient for a wider range of people

Summary: A versatile piece that combines comfort, ease of movement, and a great silhouette

Good trekking pants must be durable, but also have many other features that keep you comfortable in harsh conditions, such as ease of movement, resistance to sweat, and resistance to wind and water. In addition to safety and comfort, these days, ease of use, including pockets and belts, and a style that seamlessly connects city and mountain are also important considerations

These pants have all the elements required for cutting-edge trekking pants at a high level, and their level of perfection is truly impressive

Not only is it suitable for a wide range of outdoor activities, but it also boasts a stylish look that makes it easy to wear in everyday life, even among the previous WAYFARER series. Its ease of use and versatility, both in the city and in the field, are also appealing features not to be overlooked. For that reason alone, I personally think it would have been perfect if the design of the zipper pockets on both sides had been a little more "jersey-like." However, this is ultimately a matter of personal preference, so it will vary from person to person. In any case, it's a piece that you won't regret having this summer, and in fact, it will be extremely useful
