Salomon, a leading brand of trail shoes, has established a new standard lineup of trail shoes in the past few years, the "SENSE" family. The flagship models are the Sense Ride for runners who want to run happily and without injury, and the Sense Pro for trail runners who want to run more agilely and quickly. These two trail running shoes, designed for different runners, have been completely renewed this season, incorporating newly developed fatigue reduction technology
The Sense Ride is my favorite shoe, and I've worn every model, from the first to the second generation, including the GORE-TEX model, until they were worn out. Even I was surprised by the transformation when I actually ran in the updated shoes. I'll share my impressions of test-running these two models in the field, including why

Main features of each item
The "SENSE" series is a new generation standard lineup of Salomon trail running shoes, originating from the "S-LAB SENSE" series, which was developed by world-class mountain runner and SALOMON athlete Kilian Jornet, who pursued the ultimate functionality to help him win the historic 100-mile race, the Western States Endurance Run, held in California, USA. Based on the "Natural Motion" concept, which maximizes the natural movement and function of the legs, the series offers a variety of models to suit different levels and purposes, from beginners to advanced amateurs.
SENSE RIDE 3
The SENSE RIDE 3 (SR3) is an all-around trail running shoe in the SENSE series, offering a good balance of ground response and beginner-friendly protection. The already well-established midsole now features opti-vibe technology, further improving shock and vibration absorption, reducing fatigue and the risk of injury
The upper offers excellent fit and breathability, and the Contagrip® outsole has excellent grip on any surface. The increased protection makes it even safer for beginners to run in. These shoes allow a wide range of runners, from beginners to athletes who are conscious of safe running, to enjoy safe and enjoyable running
Recommended points
- Versatile trail shoes for all distances, terrain and levels
- A secure upper that combines comfort and protection
- New opti-vibe midsole for superior cushioning, support and stability
- An all-around outsole that's strong on mud, wet rocks and all roads
Points that interest me
- Compared to the previous model, the response from the ground and flexibility are weaker and it is heavier, so the ride may feel less direct
SENSE 4 /PRO
The SENSE 4/PRO (S4P) is a model that pursues the natural motion concept, a common motif of the SENSE series, in a more rigorous way for racing . The breathable and hydrophobic mesh upper is thin and lightweight, yet durable. Furthermore, unique fitting technologies, including EndoFit and SensiFit, provide a secure, hugging hold for an exceptionally comfortable ride. The low 4mm drop and flexible, responsive, and grippy sole allow for quick movements on any terrain, providing a comfortable ride. This model also features the highly anticipated "opti-vibe technology" in the midsole, providing excellent underfoot feel, improved shock and vibration absorption, and fatigue reduction. This shoe is perfect for athletes who want to aggressively tackle demanding, long-distance races, as well as all trail runners, as it will help you enjoy the joy of running through the mountains and fields.
Recommended points

Detailed review of SENSE RIDE 3
The upper provides comfort and added protection
At first glance, my first impression is that it doesn't look like it has changed that much compared to the previous model, but as someone who has been wearing SENSE RIDE since the first generation, when I first stepped into this third-generation model, I was shocked by how much it had changed. I felt that the comfort and stability when wearing it had clearly increased
The single-layer mesh covering the upper is denser and has a slightly firmer texture than the previous model's 3D mesh. The protection covering the toes and surrounding area of the foot has also been strengthened. The toe box isn't particularly wide, but like the previous model, it's neither too narrow nor too wide, and can be said to be moderately roomy
The SR3's upper fabric has a higher mesh density, but breathability is not an issue (right)
Of course, the SensiFit™ technology still provides a great hold on the entire foot, and the comfortable fit when you tighten the laces remains unchanged. Starting with this model, the SensiFit parts are sandwiched between the upper and lining, ensuring a secure hold and durability while also slightly improving the fit. The design is also neatly finished (see photo below, left)
The outer SensiFit part (left) is sandwiched between the upper and lining, improving fit and design
Inside the shoe, the integrated EndoFit™ technology from the sole to the tongue provides a snug fit from the bottom to the top of the foot. This, along with the Quicklace™ lacing system, which allows for quick and even tightening, are now essential to the exquisite fit of Salomon trail shoes
An essential part of Salomon shoes' exquisite fit is EndoFit™, which provides a snug fit from the sole to the instep
The heel is slightly more padded and deeper, and the heel cup is more protective and rigid, so there is less of a feeling of your heel slipping under gravity (see photo below), but it doesn't feel overly protective and provides just the right amount of stability
Compared to the heel cup of the previous model (photo left), the one on the new SR3 (photo right) holds the heel more firmly
The midsole features improved opti-vibe technology for a more stable run
The high level of stability achieved by the SR3 is also evident in the midsole. In particular, Vibe technology, a key feature of the SENSE RIDE series, " opti-vibe " Based on the concept of reducing the risk of injury and fatigue by absorbing the micro-vibrations that the legs are constantly subjected to while running, this new model has further improved impact attenuation by 15% and shock absorption by 8%, resulting in a 4% reduction in the incidence of muscle fatigue. This unique combination of cushioning and dynamism reduces impact and vibration to the legs while still providing propulsion.
Specifically, the heel area is made of a material that combines two different properties: cushioning and rebound. This allows for both cushioning to support running and stability to protect the legs. The overall sole is certainly firmer (see photo below), and the rear side of the sole is more raised compared to the previous model (see photo below). This means there's significantly less wobble when landing, and a greater sense of stability compared to the second-generation model. However, there's no particular decrease in cushioning, and the sense of security when landing remains unchanged. This feature should be especially appreciated by runners who heel strike, which is common among beginners and those with weaker legs. The Profeel Film inserted under the sole also protects against impacts from the ground, so unless the impact is very strong, damage won't occur
The SR2 (left) had a flex point further forward, but the SR3 (right) does not break even when bent hard
Compared to the SR2 (left), the SR3 (right) has a raised rear side sole, providing greater support
Versatile outsole that provides reliable grip on both on and off-road
Like its predecessor, the outsole features Contagrip® MA compound, which provides excellent grip on wet surfaces, ensuring reliable traction for all runners. The lug height measures approximately 4mm. While not particularly high, it's still high enough for off-road traction. These moderate lugs retain the strength of the previous SENSE series on paved roads, making this a versatile outsole that handles both road and trail terrain with ease
The biggest difference from the SR2 is that the sole, which was divided into slits in the previous model, has been improved. In the previous model, the forefoot was easy to flex, but with prolonged use the area around the slits would wear down and peel off (in fact, in the photo below on the left, the peeled sole has been repaired with glue). In the SR3, fine slits are evenly distributed throughout the entire forefoot, maintaining flexibility while reducing wear, achieving both stability and durability
The SR3 (right) has fine slits evenly distributed across the entire forefoot area, providing both stability and durability
Test run impressions and summary
An all-around trail shoe that has evolved to be safer and more comfortable while still retaining the fun of running in the field
I jogged on the roads around my house and also ran on nearby low mountain trails where the spring weather was beginning to show its rays, covering several dozen kilometers wearing the SR3 and then the SR2, alternating left and right
The upper, which remains as comfortable as ever, molds to your feet instantly and fits easily to any foot shape. The cushioning is comfortable when you land, absorbing impact without over-absorbing it and causing the force to dissipate, and the balance between cushioning and stability has definitely improved. Especially on downhill runs, the shoe absorbs shock so well that you can drop your heel to the ground without hesitation, and combined with the non-slip outsole, it helps prevent slippage
Furthermore, the shock-absorbing material (OPAL), which was also found in the forefoot in previous models, is now concentrated in the heel area of the SR3, providing a high propulsion force along with a moderate rebound force from landing to stepping forward. The rocker geometry sole, which curves from heel to toe, still provides a natural forward-moving sensation
On the other hand, it could be said that the SR3 has relatively less of the elements that emphasize the enjoyment of running itself, such as the lightness, flexibility, and delicate sensation under the feet that were present in previous models. However, unlike previous models, which stood out as being a hybrid of road and trail shoes, the comfort and safety for long-distance trail runs, such as running stability, protection, and support, have been greatly improved, making it a better all-around model in terms of trail shoes. There is no doubt that this will be a great shoe for runners who want to run not only for the enjoyment of running, but also safely, comfortably, and without fatigue
Detailed review of the SENSE 4/PRO
Lightweight, soft and perfectly fitted upper that feels like a sock
When you pick them up, the first thing you notice is how light and thin they are. You won't believe they're trail shoes; they're made with minimalist construction, like a road racing model
The clean and sophisticated appearance is eye-catching
The mesh hydrophobic material covering the upper does not absorb water at all, and is so thin and lightweight that you can see through it, and it is highly breathable. It is designed to be less affected by tough races, such as those involving river crossings. The SensiFit™ parts are integrated between the upper and liner, creating a clean and sophisticated design
The upper fabric repels water and allows it to pass through. It is so thin that it is almost see-through, and is highly breathable
Thanks to SensiFit installed inside both the outside and inside of the shoe and the familiar EndoFit™ mentioned above, the hold and fit felt to be by far the highest level of any Salomon shoe, excluding the S/LAB series
EndoFit has a direct effect on soft shoes, so the fit is perfect
The toe box is spacious enough to allow for toe movement without feeling cramped, yet extremely slim (though some people may find it a bit cramped). The heat-bonded protection is minimal, but it provides enough protection to keep your feet safe on typical technical terrain
Minimal but still enough protection for off-road use
The Quicklace™ system remains high quality, providing easy and consistent tightening, and the tape on the eyelets allows for some localized adjustment of tension. However, the new top-to-bottom lace garage has a slightly smaller opening, making it a bit difficult to store excess lace
The new shoelace garage allows you to store your laces from the top, but the bag is a little small
Looking at the insole alone, it is the same as the SR3 (left photo below), but when you put the outsole on top, you can see that the sole width of the S4P is slightly narrower, making it stand out as being slimmer (right photo below). Compared to the SR3, the S4P conforms to the shape of your foot without feeling too tight, and the upper wraps around your entire foot, giving you an even more exquisite feeling, almost like you're wearing a sock
The insole shape is the same, but the sole width of the S4P is slightly narrower, making it easier to maneuver your feet. However, the SR3 is more stable
The heel counter is low but has a solid structure, and its simple design allows for stability and protection
The heel cup (left) is soft and shallow, but provides just the right amount of protection. The stack height is 4mm (right)
Midsole: The first midsole equipped with [opti-vibe] technology, which is not only fast but also reduces the accumulation of damage
The biggest feature of this update is the inclusion of opti-vibe technology, which reduces damage and fatigue, in a model that prioritizes lightness, response, and agility. Like the SR3, the heel area is equipped with a material that combines cushioning and rebound, reducing the impact and vibration that occurs to the legs when running while maintaining the same propulsive power in a minimalist package
The drop is small at 4mm, and compared to the SENSE RIDE, the design is clearly more suited to speed runners who run on their forefoot, but even so, the shock absorption in the heel area is still noticeable, and the benefits will be more noticeable the longer the distance
An outsole that prevents slipping on rough terrain, provides traction on steep grades, and provides stability on the road
The outsole uses the same Contagrip® MA compound, which is resistant to slipping on wet surfaces, as the SENSE RIDE 3. The lugs are slightly deeper and spaced further apart than the SR3, suggesting that the design is better suited to mud shedding and traction on steep slopes (see photo below, left)
The S4P (left) has slightly higher lugs and more space between them than the SR4 (right)
However, it's not as extremely high as the brand's Speedcross, and it's generally flexible and durable, so you can expect a stable run on the road. In other words, it's basically a versatile outsole, with a structure that's stronger for more technical terrain
The rubber is tough, the lug height and spacing are great, and the outsole handles rough terrain well
Test run impressions and summary
High-speed trail shoes for runners who know the joy of running and want to focus solely on running fast
Similarly, I tried riding the S4P alone and with the SR3, alternating between left and right, on the roads and low mountain trails around my house
As mentioned above, the upper is incredibly lightweight, flexible, and fits perfectly, wrapping around your foot like a sock. The moment I put them on, I had a strong feeling that these were going to be fast and excellent shoes
My hunch was confirmed the moment I tried them out on the roads around my house. The lightweight, slim design of the shoes allowed for quick footwork, almost as if I wasn't even wearing them. The response from the ground felt more direct, and each step was lively, resulting in a fantastic ride. The opti-vibe midsole provided more than enough shock absorption for its stripped-down structure, helping to provide the right cushioning and protection for the soles of my feet. To put it a bit dramatically, it was as if I was experiencing the luxurious cushioning of platform shoes and the agility of barefoot shoes at the same time
The lightness and agility remained unchanged even on uphill slopes. However, perhaps because the shoes are aimed at runners with a certain level of leg strength, I was a bit concerned about the shallowness and flexibility of the heel cup. Running style and the socks worn underneath likely play a role, but even though I wasn't wearing them loosely, I often found the shoes coming off my heels on uphill slopes, so it was necessary to run with a firm grip on the forefoot. Also, compared to the SENSE RIDE, the sole width (especially around the heel) is slimmer and the contact area is smaller, so it's important to keep in mind that your body will be more likely to wobble if your center of gravity isn't properly positioned
On the other hand, on downhill slopes, the sensitivity, lightness, and flexibility of this underfoot feel are effective when avoiding obstacles, and the moderate cushioning and stability of the midsole make for a faster and more enjoyable downhill ride than usual
The SENSE 4 /PRO offers both excellent comfort and a light ride, making it a great shoe for runners who already know how to run on the trail. It offers a perfect balance of cushioning, dynamism, traction, and protection needed to go faster, all while providing an exceptional fit.
On the other hand, if you try them on when you're still getting used to handling the foot on tough, up-and-down terrain, it's not surprising that some people might be dissatisfied with the lack of support, but that doesn't seem to be a big deal, and in any case, once you try running on the trails in the new SENSE PRO , there's no doubt that it's an excellent pair of shoes that will allow anyone to experience the joy of running through the mountains and fields.
