What is the world's most tough smartwatch, the Amazfit T-Rex Ultra?
The Amazfit T-Rex Ultra boasts the world's most toughest. The design is not as delicate as a smartwatch, and gives a rather sturdy impression.
Amazfit's toughness smartwatch developed by Zepp Health Corporation
When you hear the Amazfit T-Rex Ultra, a smartwatch that boasts the world's most toughest level, many people will wonder, "What manufacturer or brand is it from which??"
"Amazfit" is a smart wearable device brand that has been launched since September 2015 by Zepp Health Corporation, headquartered in Hefei, China, with operations in the United States and based in Cupertino, California. In the third quarter of 2022, it recorded the third largest number of units shipped in Japan.
Currently, it can be said that it is a smartwatch brand that is currently available worldwide, and among the Amazfit brands, the Amazfit T-Rex Ultra is the toughest and most suitable for the outdoors.
First, looking at the toughness performance of being suitable for outdoor activities, it has passed 15 tests, including impact and humidity, which are said to be military grades. It can withstand scorching heat of 70 degrees to extreme cold of -40 degrees, operate normally even in harsh environments of -30 degrees, achieves water pressure of up to 100 meters, and is certified as EN13319 & ISO 6245, an international standard for diving accessories, and is said to be compatible with free diving up to 30 meters.
Furthermore, the body is made of 316L stainless steel, which is also sturdy and highly corrosion resistant, and is also used in medical scalpels and scissors, and is equipped with a patented mud-proof bridge and buttons that protect the body from dirt and dirt, making it a tough watch that is not only the smartwatch, but also the highest level of a regular watch.
The back cover of the Amazfit T-Rex Ultra, which is also equipped with various sensors. You can see that the back is also quite sturdy.
It also has a powerful function as a smartwatch, with dual-band positioning that utilizes both L1 and L5 signals, and a powerful GPS function that supports six satellite systems. It also supports the offline map function, which displays the downloaded maps in "Amazfit T-Rex Ultra."
There are many types of sensors installed, allowing you to measure heart rate, blood oxygen level, stress level, breathing rhythm, etc., and using these, you can also record exercise and sleep levels. It also features Zepp Coach, which provides training plans and guidance that utilize AI, making it a smartwatch suitable for daily exercise management.
Outdoor features include compass, barometer, altimeter, altitude assistant, high-grade blood oxygen level reminders, sun and moon in and out, tides, storm alerts, and check water temperatures during freediving.
With this much multifunctional function, you may be concerned about the amount of power and battery life, but the battery capacity is enough to allow for up to 20 days for standard use, 9 days for hard use, 25 days for power saving mode, 80 hours for long battery GPS mode, 28 hours for high-precision GPS mode, and 58 hours for power saving GPS mode.
The Amazfit T-Rex Ultra is extremely tough and multi-functional, but as of July 2024, the actual price is 59,900 yen , and is also cost-effective. I have actually tried out such an outdoor smartwatch.

Detailed review
A regular smartwatch gives up during winter running in Hokkaido
If you're a regular exerciser, most people now probably use detailed exercise records from your smartwatch.
As I have already introduced, the Amazfit T-Rex Ultra is safe to say that it is the world's most tough smartwatch, but many of the filming trips in campers and often write reviews of camping goods, and even as an outdoor enthusiast and living in Hokkaido, I thought there were few scenes where the toughness level of the Amazfit T-Rex Ultra would be required.
In other words, I liked the rough designs with outdoor taste, and most of them thought it was an overwhelming sense of toughness and the joy of owning it. Even if you buy a Submariner-type watch that is often used for a long time, there is no one who actually dives 200m, and even if it sinks to the bottom of the ocean at a depth of 200m, it will move, so you should assume that it is unrealistic because there is no way to retrieve it.
However, there has been a scene where I have come to a very simple situation where the limits of the Amazfit T-Rex Ultra are required for me. It's truly a blue sky. I wear a smartwatch when I run, go on a forest or hiking, or go out into the outdoor field. Even in Hokkaido in the winter, I run every day with my goal, but at this point my general-purpose smartwatch stopped.
Coach Zepp is an AI-based athletic coach system. They will arrange training schedules that suit your tastes and options.
I didn't do any research properly, but it is true that in Chitose City, Hokkaido, where I live, it can sometimes fall below -20 degrees Celsius in the middle of winter mornings, but there is no need to run during the coldest hours. Therefore, I thought that even though it was cold, it was around -10 degrees, not too hot enough to stop the smartwatch.
However, the Apple Watch explanation page on the official Apple website , I found the following notation:
■Recommended conditions for using and storing most Apple Watch models
- The Apple Watch is designed to operate comfortably in temperatures ranging from 32℉ to 95℉ (0℃ to 35℉).
- The ideal temperature for storing your Apple Watch is -4℉ to 113℉ (-20℃ to 45℃).
■Recommended conditions for using and storing Apple Watch Ultra
- Apple Watch Ultra and later works comfortably under the following conditions:
- Temperature when wearing the Apple Watch Ultra: -4°F to 130°F (-20°C to 55°C)
- Apple Watch Ultra charging temperature: 32°F to 95°F (0°C to 35°C)
- Apple Watch Ultra storage temperature: -4°F to 113°F (-20°C to 45°C)
- Water Temperature During Underwater Activities on Apple Watch Ultra: 32°F to 104°F (0°C to 40°C)
- Relative Humidity: 5% to 90% (no condensation)
As mentioned above, the temperature I consider to be a normal life has already exceeded the operating temperature of a typical smartwatch. As a result, my smartwatch stopped while I was running, and I was unable to accurately record my running performance that day.
"Amazfit T-Rex Ultra" is easy to use for everyday running
You can specify and record various types of exercises, such as "running (outdoor)," "trail running," and "walking."
Personally, I think the Amazfit T-Rex Ultra's specs, which can withstand scorching 70 degrees and operate accurately at -30 degrees, are mostly a sense of security and joy in owning, and I didn't think I'd use my smartwatch on its performance. However, as I live in Hokkaido, I really needed the toughness performance of the Amazfit T-Rex Ultra for running on cold winter days.
When running, you run while checking your time, pace, heart rate, etc. with a smartwatch, so the dial is exposed to cover the sleeves of your clothes, and you are waving your arms, making it even more cold. However, since I changed to the "Amazfit T-Rex Ultra," my smartwatch never stopped during running in Hokkaido. Incidentally, I wore it on my trip to Harbin, China, which is even colder, but there were no problems here either.
If you check the details from the "exercise record" recorded in "exercise" using the "Zepp" app on your smartphone, you can see detailed information such as changes in your "heart rate" and "pace" during exercise.
By the way, the Amazfit T-Rex Ultra has exercise management functions such as "exercise" and "movement record", and you can use the smartphone app "Zepp" to check your running situation in detail, such as "pace", "heart rate", "real-time performance", "power", "altitude", "gradient distribution", "cadence", "stride", "training effect", and "details for every 1km", allowing you to objectively review your running performance. Not only is it simple like your time is getting higher, but you can also check out cadence (steps per minute) and stride (step width), so it's nice that you can see the changes in your own driving experience through the data.
In addition, "Amazfit T-Rex Ultra" also supports the "Offline Map" function, which allows you to use the downloaded map data offline, so you can also check the maps on the "Amazfit T-Rex Ultra" alone. However, in my case, I have a function to display the locations I ran on the map using the "Exercise Record" from the smartphone app "Zepp", which allows me to review this later and see what kind of place I was running, so I have a lot of fun using it.
A "map" function that allows you to use detailed map data offline. If you can use it differently with a smartphone map, it will likely be even more useful.
It also has an AI-based "Zepp Coach" function that manages training plans and fatigue buildup, making it a very interesting feature for running and exercise lovers. Depending on the settings, there may be some settings that suit you or not, so we recommend that you make various adjustments to this section.
For me, the Amazfit T-Rex Ultra is extremely high-performance as a running smartwatch, but when you think of it as a running smartwatch, it can't be helped due to issues such as durability, but I'm concerned about the fact that it's a little big and heavy.
I'm happy with the various features that are useful outdoors too
The "compass" function is used more often than you would expect when taking photos. It is very useful for predicting the location of the sun and moon.
The Amazfit T-Rex Ultra works well as a smart watch for everyday use, but of course it also has a wide range of outdoor features, making it useful when taking photos in a camper van.
For example, the "compass" function is quite useful for me, who take photos. It is often used in combination with the Sun and Moon, a function of the same Amazfit T-Rex Ultra, but first checks the sunrise and sunset times using the Sun and Moon, and then the compass checks which direction the sunset or the morning sun will appear.
Using the "Sun and Moon" in "Amazfit T-Rex Ultra", you can easily check not only the sun's in and out as shown in the photo, but also the moon's in and out and tides.
When I use a multi-functional smartwatch like the Amazfit T-Rex Ultra, I have to worry about how far I can go with a smartwatch. In many cases, smartphones can do what you can do with a smartwatch. And when you're wearing a smartwatch, your smartphone is most likely in your jacket pocket.
In that case, smartwatches are overwhelmingly advantageous in situations where you check your running pace and heart rate, but smartphones are often more convenient when walking while checking a map, in terms of screen size and ease of use. A smartwatch is sufficient if you want to check the direction and also check the times of sunsets and sunrise, but if you have time, you might want to check it on your smartphone and make a thorough plan.
The "Amazfit T-Rex Ultra" also has storage capacity to store music data. I'm not sure whether to save music data on my smartphone or on my smartphone.
When listening to music using Bluetooth earphones, there are also issues such as whether to link it to a smartphone or a smartwatch. In that sense, I am still thinking mainly about smartphones. However, as the difficulty of not only running, but also climbing will increase, map checking will be the focus of smartwatches. In that sense, the Amazfit T-Rex Ultra, which also supports offline maps and music imports, can be said to be a great ally.
Regarding the different uses of smartwatches and smartphones in this regard, it can be said to be a source of individual concerns, including their preferences. Either way, the Amazfit T-Rex Ultra combines overwhelming toughness performance with high performance as a smartwatch, making it a very reliable outdoor gear.
Summary: "Amazfit T-Rex Ultra" is not over-spec at all
If you're thinking about skiing and snowboarding, a cold-resistant smartwatch is a must
"Finding a smartphone" is a way beyond my expectations. It just activates the vibrator of the smartphone you are pairing with, but it's quite convenient.
What surprised me when I actually tried using the Amazfit T-Rex Ultra this time was that the recommended operating temperature range for a typical smartwatch is much smaller than I expected. Even the relatively expensive Apple Watch is around 0 to 35 degrees, so it's not recommended for operation in a slightly cold place.
In Hokkaido, where I live, negative temperatures are not uncommon in December even in flatlands, but this is not recommended for operation, and in fact, I've never heard of an Apple Watch in Hokkaido that stopped due to the cold, so I guess it won't stop very often. However, for people like me who want to run even in the middle of winter, or for people who want to go outside even in the middle of winter, such as camping, mountain climbing, skiing, and snowboarding, general smartwatches that are not cold-resistant can be said to be lacking in specifications.
Smartwatches are generally more sensitive to cold than you might think, so if you are active in cold regions, be sure to check this before purchasing. Smartwatches like the Amazfit T-Rex Ultra, which keep up with extreme cold and high temperatures of -40 to 70 degrees, operate accurately even at -30 degrees, are not just specs that are proud of for outdoor enthusiasts, but are very reliable as practical specs. Why not consider this as one of your potential purchases?
Another feature of the "Amazfit T-Rex Ultra" is surprisingly useful: "Find a Smartphone." It has a simple function, such as the paired smartphone vibrating when used, but it is useful when you lose sight of your smartphone in a camper van.
