I've started discord
The Black Diamond Distance Series is a hybrid, compact, lightweight backpack that combines the characteristics of a light vest-shaped running pack and a durable mountain climbing backpack. The original model was generally praised, with people saying it was "the best season gear," and the stunning quality of the product was extracted and brought to a close by, with only the benefits of both parties being so high that it was even praised by our website for the best fast hiking pack.
the Distance Series that everyone loves was released, four years have passed since its release, and we are finally finally looking for an update to the second generation. The first major eye-catching change in the second generation lineup is the addition of the women's model and the traditional "4L, 8L, and 15L" sizes, as well as the larger "22L size." This is a long-awaited evolution for those who like themselves who carry a camera and have a lot of luggage, or for those who want to stay in a tent who want to walk easily and quickly!
we will be reviewing Distance 22 , a large capacity model of this newly updated Distance series

The rough features of Black Diamond Distance 22
Based on the best-style running pack, the "Distance Series" running pack is packed with features that can be used for climbing, scrambling, fast hiking, and more, and is now being updated to the second generation, with a new 22-liter size that is perfect for staying in an ultra-lightweight tent. The highly fitted shoulder harness is integrated from the back to the side, with a more versatile storage than the previous model, making it even more convenient to access your luggage while you are on the move. This highly finished backpack features highly durable fabric that can withstand hard activities since the previous model, and a rich variety of functionality, making it a highly complete backpack that fits quickly and fast climbing and hiking.

Detailed review
Comfort, mobility, durability: Lightweight, comfortable and robust construction, yet a more sophisticated backpack structure
The new Distance 22 has the same basic form as the previous Distance 15 , with a simple and clean front, vest-style shoulder harness on the back, and a simple side with only the compression strap. However, the fact that the entire front has a black stretch mesh pocket, and unlike the size of the 15L for trail running, it is designed with the UL hiking pack in mind, making it a very welcome item.
Like the previous model, the back panel uses a BD.dry™ vapor barrier back panel, and the lightweight foam panel with breathable mesh and light cushioning prevent moisture from entering the inside of the bag while relieving stuffiness.
Like the previous model, the main fabric is made from a unique ripstop nylon fabric made from a grid-shaped blend of lightweight, highly durable UHWMPE fibers, which are 10 times the tear strength per weight than iron, ensuring strength to accommodate hard use in tough environments.
The rain cover is designed to simply hold the drawstring bag in the main storage area and secure the flap that stretches from the outer fabric with a hook. There was no particular problem if the capacity was small, which was intended as a day trip, but when I was expecting to go to the 22 liters, I was a bit worried that the rain would be flooded if I went into the mountains for a long period of time, such as a tent.
Shoulder harness has a high fit and is also easy to use
The shoulder harness in the previous model was designed to connect the main body and harness on the sides by a shock cord, but in the latest model, this was changed to stretch mesh (photo below).
Actually, I loved the previous model's specifications that allow you to adjust the fit to your liking by squeezing the shock cord. This allows me to frequently adjust the tightness of the situation in the day, such as the amount of luggage and the climbing and descent. To be honest, I feel that the lack of freedom in the latest work is a bit disappointing to me.
However, even with the latest products, the tightening of the chest straps still provides an equally comfortable fit. The wide shoulder harness, which makes full use of "stitchless edge taping technology" with no ground seams, is wrapped around the body and supple, and the body is not easily shaken even when moving dynamically, and is very stable.
However, although it is possible to adjust the tightness slightly, it is certain that the fitting freedom has been relatively reduced compared to the previous model, and although it is satisfying under normal circumstances, it cannot be said that it is safe even when there are a lot of luggage or when you are at a speed. In that sense, it is important to note that choosing the "S/M/L" size at the time of purchase is becoming more severe.
Of the two chest straps, the lower shelf uses an elastic strap. By adjusting the tightening level here, you can get a comfortable fit that prevents the main unit from jumping up or shaking.
On the other hand, there are certainly some parts that can be clearly evolved with the latest specifications. This is because the sides can now be used as stash pockets, which greatly improves usability. Perfect for storing large gels for replenishment (see below).
Storage and functionality: More advanced storage spaces that allow you to set everything you need in a place within reach
Another major change from the previous model, and personally, what really hit me was the improvement in storage (use-use), including a review of the shoulder harness pockets. More than ever, you can now place your desired items within reach while you are taking action, with no excess or shortage.
As shown in the photo below, the new distance 22 shoulder harness has a total of eight pockets symmetrically arranged on both sides, each with a different size and entrance specifications, and can accommodate a variety of items. If you can store this much, you can almost never open the main storage of the pack while you are on the move.
① Soft flask pocket
The soft flask pocket, which is even deeper than before, can hold not only BD's special soft flask (500ml), but also Salomon's 500ml vertical flask and 500ml plastic bottles after trying it out (please note that wide and short soft flasks do not suit you).
②Shoulder belt zipper pocket
The spacious zippered pocket is perfect for storing items that should not be dropped, namely smartphones. The elasticity of the fabric allowed it to be stored well even when soft flask is placed on the back.
③ Shoulder belt stretch pocket
There is a wider gusseted pocket on the front of ①②. This is the largest space, and you can store not only food and tenugui, but also small soft flasks and lightweight windshells. By the way, there is a whistle inside the pocket on the left.
④ Side stash pocket
As I explained earlier, a new pocket has also been added to the stretch mesh that connects the harness to the main body. It is quite spacious and makes it difficult for things to pop out, so it can store gels, bag waste, and ultra-light shells just right.
New trekking pole fixing system that can be easily and securely secured
There are two suggestions for carrying poles in this pack, including new methods. First of all, the pole storage sleeves on the left and right sides of the main unit (photo below). Basically, a compact tri-fold pole can fit even if it's not a BD pole.
This method may be easy to take out once you get used to it, but on the other hand, it is difficult to store it, and it is a bit cumbersome for people with stiff bodies. Another excellent carrying system was the newly installed carry system so that it was easy to take out and store while you are on the move (photo below).
How it works is first to pass both ends of the pole through a rubber loop at your hand. Each loop is connected to its own shoulder and sides by a shock cord, so even in this state, the pole can be held in front of the chest (photo below).
Next, push the pole connected to the loop towards the back (through your face). Then, by tightening the shock cord on the shoulder, it will be secured perfectly to your backpack (video below).
This completes the set. You can start running right away. It can be easily operated with your hands, and once set, it is fixed to the back so it does not interfere with your actions, and is often thought out in many ways.
The ease of use that has been around up to now is almost the same
The access to the interior is also very simple. If you remove the hook and hold both ends and pull it, it will open completely. Rather than instantaneous, you can open it at the same time by opening the lid.
The compression cords on both sides allow you to compress the pack without overlapping even if there is little luggage (you can also hold off the clothes you've removed).
The large stretch mesh pocket on the front has enough room to hold anything you can think of, such as rain gear, food, sandals, water filters.
The inside of the main unit also comes with a zippered mesh pocket and a deep pocket for storing hydration packs. It is best to put valuables in a zippered pocket.
Summary: A greedy backpack that can be used for both running and hiking, with the aim of staying in a tent
Distance 22 which was newly added along with the update to the popular hybrid backpack, is a backpack with a capacity and features that are extremely attractive for fast hikers and FKT-like UL hikers who are trying to deeply pursue the concepts of this backpack, such as speed and toughness. This lightweight body has been stripped down, has a comfortable fitting, improved storage and ease of use, and is mainly used for trail running and speed hiking, but is also extremely versatile, allowing you to easily handle regular hiking and mountain climbing with just one, and in that sense it is not just for limited athletes. This is a must-have for modern greedy mountain climbers, such as trail running in spring, mountain climbing in summer, through hiking in autumn, and ice climbing in winter.
