Waterproof and breathable jackets for outdoor use, such as hard shells and rainwear, are now an endless parade of "highly breathable and stretchy." All manufacturers are competing for new models that sell well by their sweat and ease of movement, which is the latest trend.
Millet has been developing this "highly breathable, stretchy" hard shell for about four years now. That's the Teiphone 50000 series. Its high performance and high balance was shocking at the time, but even though there were small updates added, it hasn't changed in basic performance even after a few years, and it is surprising that it still has the highest quality quality. This was the case with mesh underwear such as Drynamic™ Mesh, a mesh shirt, which has become a popular item, but I am impressed by its unique perspective that continues to advance the market.
The lineup of the Tiphon 50000 series has steadily expanded, and this season there have been many interesting variations, including a knee-length coat type and a down jacket type with a padded padding. we'll be taking a look at the Tiphone 50,000 Warm Stretch Jacket, the fall/winter version of the Tiphone 50,000 series

Detailed review
"DRYEDGE™ TYPHON 50000" is a high-spec material that you can find everything you need in an outerwear.
The material used in the Typhon 50000 Warm Stretch Jacket (hereafter referred to as Typhon Warm) is a unique three-layer material called the DRYEDGE™ TYPHON 50000. Nowadays, high-breathable (or high-breathable) rainwear and hard shells that are easily expelled from moisture from sweat are becoming commonplace in the outdoors, but despite the fact that this material has been around for 4-5 years, it is an excellent fabric that is still at the highest level of breathability. Moreover, the waterproofness is 20,000mm, so it is reliable not only for trail running or short-term activities, but also for full-scale climbing.
The Dry Edge Typhon 50000 is a fabric with excellent specs. The outer fabric is lightly brushed, perhaps in mind for use on the snow, making it quiet and water-repellent.
Soft and stress-free comfort, moderate heat retention
The common sense of winter hard shells, like rough armor, is now in the past. If you put it on, everyone will notice a soft feel and comfort that you wouldn't expect from a hard shell. One of the reasons is that the weight is 460g, which is quite light for a hard shell for all seasons, but the careful three-dimensional cutting and the moderate stretch of mechanical stretch nylon make it less stressful when rotating the upper body or swinging the arms. It's easy to see fabrics used by a variety of manufacturers, such as GORE-TEX, Pertex Shield, and Polartec Neosell, but I think the power of this material should be more known.
I pulled my arm area to the fullest, and although it wasn't made from a polyurethane-like material, it stretched more than I thought.
Since it is positioned as a hard shell for autumn and winter, the lining is made of brushed fabric, and even just one piece has a certain degree of heat retention. There is a difference in judgment about this. Giving the shell itself warms up helps layering if there is not much activity at low temperatures, but even at low temperatures, if you are experiencing a lot of sweating, you will want to take off the hot shell. In that sense, the Tiphone Warm this time is probably not too bothering you if you're skiing or snow hiking, but you need to be careful if you're wearing it for high-tempo winter activities.
The lining is firmly waterproofed with seam tape, and the brushed fabric ensures a certain degree of heat retention.
High functionality with great attention to detail
As expected of a representative model of a long-established brand that has been making authentic hard shells for many years, the sense of balance in the details is impressive. For example, the packable design allows you to store items by eliminating excess parts such as storage bags and wrapping them in the hood and snuggling the cord lock, a convenient feature that has been around for the series since ancient times.
Roll it round and put it in the hood. If you scratch the cord lock, it can be stored in a cylindrical shape about 25cm.
The inner pocket is lining on the left chest. It's large enough to hold a smartphone or Shobunsha mountain climbing map.
The front zipper is durable and waterproof, and is smooth and freezing resistant, making it safe even in winter seasons. The double zipper design allows it to be released from above and below. By opening the zipper from the bottom, you can wear it in your own way, reducing the flapping of the clothing, and making it easier to lift your thighs.
The front has a double Vislon zipper. When it's hot, it can be used in a convenient way, such as opening the top and bottom to increase ventilation and reducing flapping.
The two hand warmer pockets on the left and right are waterproof with waterproof zippers. As promised by a mountain jacket, it is located at a high position that does not interfere with wearing a hip belt or harness.
Hand warmer pockets are placed at a higher position so that they can be used with a hip belt or harness.
The cuffs are elastic + velcro. It's not large enough to easily put on the sleeves while wearing ski gloves, so it's not suitable for serious skiing, but it's easy to adjust and highly airtight.
The large hood that can be worn over the helmet can be firmly matched to the head thanks to the vertex Velcro and cord locks on the back of the head and cheeks. The brim is also large and seems to be able to handle heavy winds and rain without any problems.
I actually tried wearing it on a hike in autumn
I walked around Tanzawa, where the temperature was around 5°C. If it's thin rainwear, I would like to wear another piece of insulation or fleece between the base layer, but thanks to the heat retention of this jacket and the same Millet Drynamic™ Mesh Underwear, there was no need for that. In other words, it is a combination of "mesh underwear + base layer (a blend of merino wool and synthetic fiber) + typhon worm."
The combination of excellent sweat handling and heat retention due to drynamic, and the breathability of Typhon Warm with weather resistance and heat retention provides minimal and maximum comfort for fall and winter hikes.
Outside of the start of walking, I was able to climb, descend, and even when the wind was passing through, I didn't feel cold at all, so I didn't need to wear cold clothes. The windproof and heat retention of the shell itself blocks cold air and prevents body temperature from escaping, and the "sweat bucket relay" made with three layers - drynamic, base layer and timofwarm - worked perfectly, so the main factor was that it didn't cause cold sweat. Furthermore, in the middle of winter when the temperature drops, by combining it with the highly functional insulation " Breather Toy Hoody ," which is also frequently featured on our website, you can achieve perfect layering, without having to put on and take off even when exercising at lower temperatures.
As for fitting, although it is loose enough to not get cramped even when layering thick clothing inside, the silhouette is nice that you don't want to overdo it that much. Personally, I personally find this year's honey mustard coloring, and I feel like it's getting better every year.
While hiking, the front zipper was opened almost entirely from above and below, allowing the clothes to ventilate with the wind from the front, reducing the flapping of the clothes. If it's not that intense, you can do it comfortably without having to take off your hair to some extent. However, if you sweat seriously, the warmth of the lining will get in the way, so I think you'll want to take it off. As someone who loves pit zippers, I couldn't help but think that would have been good if it had been.
Summary: From autumn leaves viewing to skiing and snotrekking. A hard shell with the necessary functions at a high level
Compared to the Typhon 50,000 Stretch Jacket for spring and summer, the fabric has been thicker and the lining is also brushed tricot, which has caused the moisture permeability to be impaired, but perhaps because it was used after the temperature was cooler, I was able to fully enjoy the good sweat removal. The waterproof, breathable, stretchable, moderate heat retention, soft comfort and no shortcomings, the honor student hard shell fulfilled all the outerwear required for an early autumn hike, as expected. If you're hiking in spring, summer, autumn, or skiing or low mountain trekking in winter, this is the perfect hard shell that can be used from the autumn foliage season to the remaining snowy spring.
One thing to note is that in winter, it is a bit more general-purpose for people who mainly focus on ski touring and ice climbing than trekking, so although it is not impossible, it may feel like it is not enough compared to the hard shells for each activity. However, these models are difficult to reach in terms of price, so this is a highly recommended item for those who are first stepping into the winter world as they are gradually becoming more and more immersed in the mountains.
