Review: Sea to Summit Comfort Light Insulated Mat - An extremely comfortable air mat that can be used all year round

Sea to Summit was founded in 1990 by Tim McCartney Snape and Roland Tyson of Perth, Australia. The company's name comes from a project that Tim, one of the founders, took over from Sea, where he was 0m above sea level, to Summit, the summit of Everest. Originally, it started out as a manufacturing of sleep bag liners, but now we offer a comprehensive range of outdoor travel gear, from sleeping bags, dry bags, tableware to soap.

Sea to Summit offers a variety of gear, but many of them include original ideas without compromising everything, and the comfort light insulated mats also include such attention to detail.

Broad features of Comfort Light Insulated Mat

The front and back use 40D ripstop nylon on the front and back, and the unique Sea to Summit structure called Air Sprung Cell, which increases comfort and durability against punctures and tears. By using a non-woven fabric integrated with a metal layer called Exkin Platinum on the inside of the surface, heat from the body is reflected, and thermolite is used as insulation underneath the layer. Furthermore, a layer of thermolite is added only to the body, making it two layers to increase heat retention, boasting a high standard of R value of 4.2. The mat itself is 6.4cm thick, making it a model that is highly comfortable and insulating, even among Sea to Summit sleeping mats.

Detailed review

The valve system is excellent!

This can be said for other Sea to Summit mats, but the ease of setting up and taking out is definitely worth choosing Sea to Summit! It even makes you think that. In particular, the storage staff bag, which uses an Air Sprung model, can also be used as an air pump, so setting up is completed just by pumping air twice.

When air is pumped through the mouth, the mouth is also a check valve, so there is no need to blow it in desperately. Deathing also instantly, air is expelled from the large opening, so the withdrawal is also instantly.

Insulation that can be used even in winter

It is obviously a good idea to refrain from using it in harsh winters, but it is relatively high at an R value of 4.2, so it can be used in low mountains even in winter. The inside of the 40D ripstop nylon surface fabric is a thin metal layer called Exkin Platinum and an integrated nonwoven fabric, which is a thin metal layer called Exkin Platinum, reflecting heat from the body and reducing heat loss. Thermolites are used as insulation to prevent heat loss from cold ground. Furthermore, the body part, which is highly heat-dissipating, is made of two layers of thermolite and 20D nylon, which further improves insulation.

Amazing cushion

The unique Sea to Summit mechanism called Air Sprung provides considerable comfort and stability. No matter how thick the mat is, if you put your weight locally on it, it will lose your sense of stability, but thanks to the air sprung structure, the pressure is distributed and the stability is maintained. With this unique structure and thickness, it is 6.4cm thick, so when you lie down, you will be wrapped in a deep mat, providing the ultimate sleeping comfort. Outdoors are sure to be extremely comfortable.

The amount of air inside the mat is different from person to person. Pressing the button in the center of the air valve will gradually drain air, allowing you to easily adjust the amount of air inside the mat.

Impressions of actually using it

After all, it's a great advantage to have a storage staff bag as an air pump. Especially when you're tired from going all day, it can be hard to even breathe in, so this is a must-have item. Some manufacturers offer dry backpacks and air pumps as options, but the fact that the standard storage staff bags are usable is probably worth choosing the SEA TO Summit.

It has excellent insulation and can be used without any problems from spring to autumn. Summer may be hot. It is at a level that can withstand use in low mountains even in winter. If you place a silver mat or a thin folding mat under this mat, the R value will be around 5, so it won't be suitable for use in the harsh winter, but it can be used without any problems even in winter.

The mat is quite comfortable. If you continue to act all day long and lie down on the mat, you'll soon get sleepy! Even if you lie down or place your elbows on, your body will not be exposed to the ground due to the weight. Thanks to the air sprung, the pressure seems to be distributed well. It would be nice if you could lie down so comfortably outdoors.

When stored, it looks the same size as a 1L Nalgene bottle. The storage size is relatively small for a mat that has such cushioning and insulation properties.

The regular size weighs 620g, which feels a bit heavy for a sleeping mat, but considering this comfort, insulation of an R value of 4.2, and durability made from 40D fabric, it is a lighter classification than a sleeping mat of a comparable level, and the overall balance is high! This also shows the manufacturer's efforts to reduce weight, such as using only the two insulation layers of the fuselage and changing the air sprung pattern.

Summary: Recommended for people like this

This one mat can be used for three seasons, as well as in low mountains in winter. It's a pad that can be used all seasons and is highly comfortable and durable! Perfect for those who are: If you are worried about using it in the winter, bring a silver mat or a light folding mat with you to get an R value of nearly 5, so you can sleep warmly. However, the trade-off between insulation and comfort is that it weighs only 620g, so if you can reduce the weight by using a quilt instead of a sleeping bag during spring and autumn, it may be an even better tool!

I only use it in spring and summer! For those of you who are looking for a more affordable price, it's not like that, and there are even lighter and cheaper pads, so that's probably better. However, the valves are extremely functional, so if you're tired of breathing in every time, it's definitely worth trying out not just this model, but the Sea to Summit.
