A partner who is close to those who want to enjoy the mountains more lightly and those who want to face nature more purely
The concept of "ultralight (UL) backpacking," which involves cutting down the weight to the limit and walking lightly, has become a new way of enjoying mountain climbing in the 21st century.
There are different reasons why people are oriented towards UL, but one of the reasons is that "the lighter the luggage, the faster, longer, and easier to walk" (although it's not actually that simple). Another thing can be cited as one of the unmistakable charms of "confronting nature with only what is truly necessary and essential" that lies beyond the loads of scraping off.
In any case, fewer people now walk with huge, stupid luggage, over 20 kilometers, than before, like they did in the mountains 20 years ago. Long-distance hiking with lightweight, compact luggage is becoming a new common sense.
This time, we have chosen the best model of the Ultra Light Backpack, a backpack that is suitable for hiking with minimalist equipment. For the past eight years since its inception, this site has been carefully carrying it on its own, from indie brand backpacks to the latest backpacks from major manufacturers. I would like to share this achievement with you here. The backpacks introduced below are all models with a more lighter and more active mountain trip. This time, we chose a capacity of around 40 liters, which can be used not only for day trips but also for hiking for 2 nights or more with a tent on the back.
In the second half, we will also summarize the points to keep in mind when choosing an ultra-light backpack for the first time, taking into account previous experience. It's an ultra-lightweight backpack that's difficult to try, but we hope it will help you find the best model without making any mistakes.

Best Beginners Division
It has been around for the past five years that UL backpacks, which were usually made by hand or produced on an extremely small scale, have become developed and produced by major outdoor manufacturers who have no longer been able to ignore the growing popularity of the product. Even manufacturers with the world's top market share of backpacks have now started dealing with ultra-light backpacks, and Ultralight, which had previously been exclusive to a limited number of enthusiasts, has finally opened its doors to general hikers.
A common feature of backpacks made by major outdoor manufacturers is, in short, that it is easy to use for beginners (for better or worse). We introduce three models that have been born in recent years and are suddenly becoming more lively and kind to beginners, and are of great overall quality.
First of all, in terms of weight, none of them are so light. However, instead, the back frame and panel structure are stable and breathable based on a traditional mountain climbing backpack, lightweight yet durable high-performance fabric, and a variety of storage items, making it attractive for its generousness that doesn't leave beginners alone, showing a high level of perfection in a different sense from the general department. If hikers who have previously carried regular backpacks are about to move to Ultra Light for the first time, but also if they are just starting to start mountains, they will fit in smoothly even if they start carrying this backpack.

Favorite points
- It's lightweight yet has a very stable feel and is extremely comfortable to carry (back pads that combine breathability and cushioning)
- Adjustable length back
- Abundant storage space and customizable side compression straps for various locations
- Durable enough for a UL backpack
Best Large Capacity (Toughness) Division
UL backpacking culture spread among hikers who spent months walking on the long trails of thousands of km in the United States. As can be seen from its origins, even if it is light, it is meaningless if you cannot carry a large amount of luggage. It is required to have evenly high load stability, cushioning to accommodate gravity, and sufficient strength of the fabric and sewing. Here we will introduce three ultra-lightweight models that are extremely heavy and can be said to be safe no matter how much of a burden.
First of all HYPERLITE MOUNTAIN GEAR is a brand that develops UL products that fully utilize DCH (Dyneema Composite Hybrid), an ultra-lightweight, high-strength fabric that combines lightness, strength, and high waterproofness from an early stage. The DCH body is both light and tough, and the lightweight, rigid aluminum stays support the weight, providing perfect stability even when packed with luggage. the UNBOUND 40 which is making its first appearance this season, is equipped with a wide range of cutting-edge, comfortable and convenient storage spaces, and is compatible with modern, light-heavy thru-hiking.
Other Gossamer Gear Mariposa the gorilla mentioned earlier , is a stunning construction that maintains a high level of balance between weight and function, while still allowing for a large capacity of 60 liters. ULA Equipment may not be a very familiar brand in Japan, but it is a made-in-Utah brand that has been supported by hikers all over the country for many years. The 2023 season has been updated by Ultra Fabric, a hot topic for all classic models. While maintaining the stability and good balance of carrying, I have been able to wear it even lighter and stronger.

Best Speed Hike Division
In addition to the UL backpacking that we have discussed so far, the evolution of ultra-light backpacks has also been influenced by activities such as trail running. The same is true for trail runs that "lightweight". The two activities, which shared the philosophy of lightness and freedom, have been inspired by each other, have evolved into a hybrid game of tent hiking and trail running, known as "fastpacking" in recent years.
The vest-shaped structure, which is carried by removing the waist belt and clamping it between the back and chest like a traditional trail running pack, provides ease of movement when riding, and is adjusted to carry a certain amount of capacity like a traditional mountain climbing backpack, making it an ultra-lightweight backpack for fast packing that combines two features: "can be run and carried." Here's an excellent model for this type.
First of all, personally, I cannot miss the Paagoworks Rush30 . The close adhesion between the back and shoulder harness, which fits around your body, gives you a sense of comfort the moment you carry it on your back. And you'll fall in love with the easy-to-use storage items that are carefully crafted down to the smallest details, and you'll fall in love even more as you take action. In addition to its lightweight design that eliminates waste, it is also highly comfortable to wear and does not compromise stability and fit, making it difficult to leave once you use it, and I always bring it out when I'm in a style where I'm actively working with little luggage.
In addition, a completely new series from Black Diamond will be participating in the fast hiking category in the 2023 season. Additionally, the Epic XT series, the Epic XT series, is now available with an even larger capacity (35 liters) model , the "3.0 ." Both performances exceed expectations and are highly recommended models that are so difficult to choose from, they are the best of the season.

- Mesh stretch pockets that can store many items on both sides and are easy to access
Best Small Capacity (Frameless) Division
Although they are interested in UL backpacking, I think many people don't often travel on mountain trips that often, which involve several nights. For those people, we recommend a capacity of 30 liters, perfect for a lightweight hike of 1-2 nights on weekends.
With this class of capacity, it is often possible to carry it comfortably on the shoulders and back even if it does not have a sturdy frame (some items don't even have a waist harness), and as a result, these "frameless backpacks" are characterized by their unique lightness. There are still many fans who are loyal to this "ultimate minimalism," and you'll be able to fully enjoy the ultra-light concept, which cuts it down to the limit. Here we have picked out three excellent models of these frameless, ultra-light backpacks (please note that they are extremely difficult to obtain in Japan as they are produced in small quantities and are sold directly from manufacturers).
First, Zpacks Nero is a day-to-week backpack made from a promising brand that combines "tradition and innovation" that pursues lightness to the limit, while also greedying with cutting-edge comfort and functionality. Starting this season, Ultra Fabric has been adopted, which is even lighter and more durable than conventional DCF materials, and has been able to further reduce the weight. It is packed with practical ideas, such as an uneven seat pad attached to the back (a plus cushioning and breathability), and the waist belt can be adjusted in three stages.
the LITE WAY GRAMLESS PACK which was featured here last year , has also been using Ultra Fabric since this season. I don't know that the recent momentum of this fabric will remain in vain. Aside from the material changes, all products are handmade by sewing artists, and the appeal of high functional beauty, which is lightweight and simple yet condensed with ease of use.
is the representative model v2 PA'LANTE , a cottage brand from Utah, which can be said to be the source of UL backpack trends over the past few years . The latest materials and innovative construction specializing in the niche purpose of FKT (Fastest Known Time) have now attracted many enthusiastic followers. In addition to the 37 liter main storage, it also features a variety of storage options on the outside, allowing for quick access to the items you need while you are still taking action.

- In addition to the groundbreaking bottom pockets, there are a variety of external pockets that allow you to access them immediately without having to pack them.
- Main compartment with wide openings and easy packing
Best Cost Performance Division
Ultra-light backpacks, which are mainly produced by small manufacturers, are inevitably expensive and tend to have long delivery times. In this situation, we are truly grateful for a cost-effective model that offers reliable quality and affordable prices. This season, prices are generally rising, making it difficult to find high-cost-performance models, but Montbell offers a stable price. Performance is neither good nor bad, but this price is as impressive as ever.
mont-bell versalite pack 40 (approx. 480g, 40L)
Favorite points
- Ultra lightweight and low price
- Removable pads on the back
How to Choose: 5 Tips to Choose an Ultra Light Backpack Smartly
Introduction: Things to keep in mind when choosing an Ultralight Backpack
This ultra-light backpack has a strong personality, but the basic concept is no different to a mountain climbing backpack. Here, based on your knowledge of mountaineering backpacks, I will write about the characteristics, trends and habits unique to UL backpacks that are different from traditional mountaineering tips on how to choose one that has been gained from previous experience. If you have never been exposed to basic knowledge about mountaineering backpacks, we recommend that you first read the article below on how to choose a mountaineering backpack.

Another thing to note is that, unfortunately, ultra-light backpacks are by no means all. This is because these backpacks are made with a particularly low weight limit that can be carried comfortably compared to traditional mountain climbing backpacks.
A typical climbing backpack is designed to support the weight of a robust suspension and waist harness so that you can carry a considerable amount of burden comfortably. Many ultra-light backpacks save more than ever the burden of this burden, resulting in lighter weights that are harder to withstand.
Therefore, if you pack your luggage in the same way as normal climbing, you may end up not being able to hit the ground and say, "I'm just hiking with a backpack that's uncomfortable to carry." In other words, if you want to enjoy the mountains comfortably with your UL backpack, you need to review the entire luggage you carry accordingly, carefully select only what you really need, and collect each item as light as possible.
In this case, you will inevitably need the ability to determine in advance what and how much you need on the trail you are about to go to. This is not written in some manual, but varies greatly from person to person, and one person's essentials are often the luxury of another person. In that sense, ultralight backpacking is a game that is only allowed by hikers who have been able to improve their judgment on what tools they need by walking on the trail (in a strict way) and spending a lot of their time in nature (although, if you think about it, these abilities remain necessary no matter what style of climbing.。
If you can't give up on a fluffy, comfortable mattress, pillows, clean clothes, or a luxurious meal with fresh ingredients, an ultra-light backpack may not make your climb happy. Conversely, if you are prepared to be passionate about how far, long and easy it can be with the equipment you stripped down through trial and error, the UL backpack will surely be your irreplaceable companion.

Point 1: Determine the balance between weight and comfort
This UL backpack is designed to be as light as possible, and has a lot of incredibly light backpacks. However, it should be noted that basically the lightness of a backpack and the ease of carrying are in conflict. To be honest, there were many UL backpacks I've carried in the past that I thought I'd never carry again. Of course, there may have been some people who matched the scenes and preferences that suited them. In any case, in order to choose the UL backpack that's best for you, it's important to determine the best balance between lightness and comfort that's perfect for you.
Select by calculating backwards from "How much weight do you carry?"
Until now, I have vaguely written things like "ultra light" and "ultra light", but how much weight is actually used? For now, let's decide on the estimates that we are assuming. There is a theory, and there is no need to do so, but when we generally call it "ultralight", it is assumed that the total weight (called base weight) except for consumables such as food, water, and fuel is within 3 to 5 kilograms
This is partly because it is "weight that can walk easily without putting any strain on the body" derived from the experience of many UL hikers up to now, but another factor is also related to the value of the luggage limit (load limit) that UL-based backpacks can tolerate. Considering that the load limit of many UL backpacks is in the low 10kg range, this means that even if you add a few days to a week's worth of food, it will be kept to a minimum of 10kg. Conversely, if you don't put too much consumables on it, no one will get mad if you put a little more inside, and if you have a backpack with a load limit of up to 15kg and there is no problem with your physical strength, you can relax the standard a little more. There's no correct answer there. It is merely a guide to thinking, and the fun of UL is to create your own preferences in a way that is satisfying.
Is there no frame, or a frame?
The frame on the back is extremely important to ensure that the weight of the pack is transmitted to the waist area, which is not easily felt. However, if you have successfully kept your base weight below 5 kilograms and your luggage very light, or if you are confident in your physical strength and used to walking with heavy loads, you may not necessarily need to have a back frame for a comfortable carrying experience (there are individual differences).
By omitting the frame, the weight of the backpack can be significantly reduced. First, if you reduce the hip belt because there is no frame that transmits load to your waist, you can successfully reduce the weight by about 200 grams. Even if your frameless backpack has a hip belt, it is only meant to secure your hip pocket or to prevent the pack from swinging when you walk briskly.
However, you must be prepared to put all the weight on your shoulders with a frameless backpack. The shoulders are not as strong as the waist, so the heavier the load, the more discomfort such as fatigue and pain accumulates rapidly. Taking these into consideration, when choosing a frameless backpack, it is a good idea to choose a model that is as resistant to strain as possible, taking into account the width of the shoulder harness pad, cushioning, and the position of the center of gravity (whether the weights will pull you back). By the way, when carrying a frameless backpack, you can dramatically improve the comfort of carrying by placing a closed cell foam mattress in your backpack to make it easier to carry around with you, like a pseudo-frame (personally, Evernew's foldable mattress " FPmat " is a must).
On the other hand, depending on the season and style when you have a lot of luggage, such as winter, it is entirely possible that the base weight will be 5 kilograms or more. Also, for a variety of reasons, you may be hesitant to suddenly move to extreme lightness, for a variety of reasons, such as those who want to try an ultralight hike for the first time, those who prefer a lighter feel even more comfortable to carry, and those who are not confident in their physical strength. In such cases, there is no problem with a super lightweight backpack with a frame.
The framed backpack has a structure that supports the backpack by having a lightweight aluminum or carbon support pole on the back and a built-in resin panel. The load is transmitted to the hip belt at the waist, and the weight of the backpack is efficiently distributed across the waist, shoulders and back. Needless to say, the comfort and security of carrying are very different from frameless. Also, some models with framed backpacks allow you to remove the frame or hip belt if necessary (photo below). Framed backpacks are recommended because they are easy to accommodate a variety of occasions by customizing them to suit the weight of the contents.
Point 2: Do you run or not?
As mentioned in the first half of the recommended models, many of the ultra-light backpacks have recently become a "fast packing" model that combines the characteristics of trail running packs to make them easier to run.
Many fast packing backpacks have a vest-shaped structure that supports the weight of the back and chest, making it less likely to shake when you run, making it very different to the hassle of when you are doing it. Another major advantage is that the shoulder harness has many pockets and hydration and soft flasks are designed to be stored, making it easier to replenish your supplies while running. Although it is a small detail, it provides a more comfortable fit to your style.
It is important to note that when it comes to fast packing, there are few models with large capacity, but if you're also a particular focus on trails (although it's not that you can't run a simple UL backpack), it's not a bad idea to consider a fast packing backpack.
Point 3: How much capacity is required?
There is no clear standard, but how much capacity is required for ultralight backpacking? Based on information from various guidebooks and other information, here is an estimate of how I have come to my experience so far.
Over 50 liters: capacity that is hard to get short on any activity
If you're thinking about a long trail for more than a week in the future, or if you're planning on taking up all your UL trips in the future with just one pack, choosing a model with around 50L is a wise choice. With just one piece of cake, you can carry everything you need for most trekking with plenty of time to pack. This class also offers peace of mind if you have to carry a lot of water on a trail with little water.
Around 35-45 liters: Perfect for when UL backpacking is not performed for more than one week
This class is the perfect size for most UL hikers. It is also not uncommon for experienced through hikers to take on long trails in this class. In my case, in the three typical seasons, I packed a 45-liter backpack with basic UL equipment and food, water and fuel, and was able to stay in a tent for about 2 to 5 days. On the other hand, if the capacity is in the 30 liters, it may be close to the limit depending on the water and food supply situation. This will vary depending on the season, number of days, equipment, etc.
Around 25-35 liters: Perfect for day trips or hiking for 1-2 nights in seasons except midwinter
This size is usually recommended as an introduction to day hiking, or for those who are in the process of stepping into Ultra Light for the first time. It is possible to hike multiple nights if you use external attachments and use UL nights such as tarp or zert. It can also be used as a small everyday backpack, so from this point of view it is surprisingly easy to use. Apparently, master-grade UL hikers go for this size for just a week.
Point 4: What should you do with the fabric and materials?
Ultralight backpacks maintain minimum strength while keeping the weight as low as possible, resulting in the need to use cutting-edge, high-performance materials, which are "light (even if thin) strong" fabrics. These materials inevitably become expensive, which is one of the reasons why ultra-light backpacks are priced so much higher.
, the Dyneema Composite Fabric (DCF) or Dyneema Composite Hybrid (DCH) and X-Pac were the leading roles of ultra-lightweight, durable materials Although it is still one of the most popular materials today, with the introduction of Ultra Fabric in 2021, the current situation is that all manufacturers who have used Dyneema have shifted to Ultra Fabric, with the shift to Ultra Fabric. Also noteworthy is the lightweight, highly durable and environmentally friendly "ECOPAK".
Dyneema Composite Fabric (DCF, DCH, also known as Cuven Fiber)
Dynema®, an ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fiber, boasts strength that is said to be 15 times stronger than steel, and is 30% lighter than nylon and polyester and 45% lighter than aramid. DCF is a film-like fabric made by laminated with UV resin, and is also known as the "strongest fabric in the world." For this reason, despite being ultra-lightweight, it is highly abrasion resistant, does not stretch like nylon, is UV resistant, and is also almost 100% waterproof, making it rapidly becoming used in tents, tarps, and backpacks. Because the fabric is difficult to dye, it is generally more transparent to either white or black.
X-Pac
A special three-layer material made from X-shaped layers of high-strength polyester fibers developed as fabrics for ship sails, and is made of a special material with a three-layer structure, made from an outer material and a water-resistant lining. Although not as light as Dyneema, this one is also lightweight, has strong tear strength, waterproofness and UV resistant, and the fabric has a stable shape and firmness, making it easy for the backpack to stand on its own, and this one also has the characteristics that are suitable for backpacks. The price and difficulty of obtaining were more affordable and had a wide range of colours than Dyneema, making it widely available, including small bags.
Ultra Fabric
Developed by Challenge Outdoor, this fabric is a fabric (woven fabric) woven by blending ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers, familiar under the Dyneema® brand name, with high-strength polyester fibers. It is said to have several times stronger and wear resistance than Cordura nylon, and is equal or higher than that of DCF, DCH, and X-Pac. Furthermore, the lining is laminated with recycled RUV™ film, providing excellent waterproofness as a fabric (but be careful as the seams are not seam-taped, so it is not completely waterproof as a backpack).
ECOPAK
ECOPAK is the world's first composite fabric made using 100% recycled yarn, and is said to be able to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1 pound compared to standard fabrics. Made from polyester fibers and multiple layers of laminated film, the fabric is lighter than X-Pac and DCF hybrids, and is also 100% waterproof.
When choosing a UL backpack, you can rest assured that you can choose the cutting edge materials listed above, if you have a budget. On the other hand, if you are using thin nylon fabric, we recommend that you check if you are using special nylons (such as high-density Robic ripstop nylon) that are light and durable. Conversely, be careful of cheap, non-brand backpacks with ultra-lightweight appearance, only the shape is super light.
Point 5: Pockets, straps, and other storage
Ultra-light backpacks tend to minimize pocket use, but among these, the storage space is as convenient and easy to use as possible, and the difference in ease of use is reflected. Finally, I would like to introduce some pockets that I personally would never give in, and storage that I would be happy to have.
Front pocket → Required
The front pocket may be the most important storage part for a UL backpack. Many UL backpacks have roll-top styles with no rain covers, so this front pocket is the easiest space for small items. Mesh can easily dry out wet items, and stretching makes it less likely to get caught, and of course, the larger and deeper ones can hold cold protection jackets and hats, so this is a great packing experience, but this is also a problem with the weight.
Side pockets → Almost essential
I think most people usually store water bottles in the side pockets attached to the bottom of the side. In my experience, it is nice to have a larger size so that at least a 1 liter water bottle is easy to use, and to have a model that is positioned so that it can be put in and taken out while walking, or the entrance is angled at an angle at an angle.
Hip belt pocket → No problem if you don't have it
The small pocket located on the hip belt is convenient for storing small foods and sunscreen. However, from my experience, it is often too small to fit anything, so personally I can't say it's a must.
Shoulder harness pocket → I'm happy if there's no problem even if it's not there
Personally, the pocket attached to the shoulder harness is quite efficient as a pocket attached to the front of the pack. For example, a smartphone. For example, soft flasks. A little food for fun. In terms of shape, this pocket is often more useful than hip belt pockets, but there are not many models that are standard attached, but if it is an option, I'll end up wearing it. That's the pocket.
Attachments and straps → Even if they are not included as standard, it is important to be able to install them yourself later.
The UL backpack is as light as possible, and may not come with a standard strap or elastic cord on the outside. In that case, can't the mattress be tied up on the outside? How about hanging trekking poles, sandals, or cups? depends on whether there is a "loop (or a belt with multiple daisy chain loops)" for attaching straps or bungee cords
If there is a loop, even if there is nothing at the time of purchase, you can use the strap you have prepared yourself later to tie most tools together depending on your ingenuity. Make sure you have a loop to thread the strings around the backpack, or if the manufacturer offers options. Whenever you want to add something, it's important to know whether you're able to do it yourself.
summary
UL backpacks are often produced in small scale under small garage brands, making them difficult to fit in stores, and are expensive and have long delivery times, making them one of the items that are difficult to reach. Recently, major manufacturers have entered the market, and although it has become easier to try these types of backpacks than before, it is probably worth the courage to rely solely on online information to pick up expensive purchases. I hope this article will help you find your own experience (mainly my failures) useful to those who are considering purchasing a UL backpack. I wish you good luck.
