The role of rainwear in mountain climbing is more than just keeping out the rain!
Weather in the mountains is difficult to predict and changeable. When hiking in Japan, it's common for the sky to be covered in clouds above the mountains, resulting in unfortunate rain, even if the weather forecast predicts clear skies. Rainwear is said to be essential equipment for safely enjoying the outdoors in areas prone to such troublesome rain. We mention this on this site every now and then, but it's so important that we'll mention it again and again
Rainwear's role in mountain climbing is not just to keep out the rain. It also plays an important role as a shell (outer wall) that protects the body from various environmental changes that can cause loss of body heat, such as snow, wind, and cold, as well as obstacles that can injure the body, such as branches and rocks. It also has an essential function in modern mountain climbing: it expels moisture (water vapor) trapped inside the clothing, preventing it from becoming too stuffy
The smart way to choose is to use them according to your purpose and usage
Rainwear has many roles, but in recent years the variety of models available has increased exponentially, with different features such as waterproofness, breathability, durability, weight, and ease of movement to suit different uses and styles. Choosing the best rainwear for you from the wide range of options available is no easy task
there has been a surge in new models featuring lightness (under 200g) and high breathability . Nowadays, mountain magazines and outdoor shops commonly feature ultra-lightweight and conventional models side by side in the "rainwear" category. However, while these types can withstand a certain amount of rain, they cannot be expected to withstand prolonged heavy rain or to be durable enough to be used for years. In that sense, if you are serious about mountaineering, you will need rain gear made of sturdier fabrics that will provide some peace of mind even in more severe conditions that require you to spend days at a time. Of course, even these reliable models are becoming more functional, lighter, and more comfortable.
I want to know about rainwear that is safe for hard use such as mountain climbing and long trails
The key points to consider when choosing the perfect rainwear are detailed in this article , but this time, taking that into consideration, we've picked out 10 of the most versatile pieces of clothing that are made from reliable fabrics and can be used safely on multi-day traverses, with the exception of serious winter mountain climbing in mountain ranges above 2,000m, so you can be sure you'll have peace of mind with just one piece.
As always, the basic premise of the selection criteria is simple: what would I want (or have bought) if I were to buy something this year? This article is updated every year, and it includes not only this year's new releases, but also recommended models that have continued from last season, and even models that were positioned as lightweight rainwear until last year. Please understand that these are all the results of a renewed selection process based on evaluations such as "this is actually good enough for general mountain climbing" through testing and using various models up to this point
The first five pieces are highly weather-resistant and can be used not only from spring to autumn but also in seasons with some snow, while the last five pieces are lightweight and easy to use in mild weather (be careful of prolonged rain in the cold temperatures of spring and autumn). The three-level rating ★, which indicates the characteristics of the clothing, is for reference only. Prices are as of May 23, 2017

MAMMUT GORE-TEX Quantum Ultra-Light Jacket
Comfort ★★★ Waterproof ★★★ Breathability ★★★ Functionality ★★★ Durability ★★☆ Value for money ★☆☆
After checking out the many models released in the 2017 season, I personally recommend Mammut's new hard shell as one of the most complete rainwear products to date, as it combines comfort, weather resistance, and functionality
First of all, the fabric is made of Gore-Tex's latest material, GORE C-KNIT. The lining is knitted with 12D ultra-fine yarn, making it light and flexible, smooth and comfortable to wear, highly breathable, yet still waterproof and durable. Its high level of overall performance, which combines all the elements required for modern outdoor activities, makes it almost impeccable for general mountain climbing purposes other than extreme activities
However, two years have passed since its first appearance, and GORE C-KNIT rainwear has already been used by many brands and is no longer a rarity. Rather, the highlight of this model is that no corners have been cut in any aspect of rainwear, including the C-KNIT
In terms of waterproofing, it's no surprise that there are other ways to prevent water seepage than through the fabric, such as an easily adjustable hood and cuffs, and in terms of comfort and functionality, there are underarm ventilation for increased ventilation, a double front zipper, and roomy hand warmer pockets and inner pockets with gussets. The design and silhouette remain as consistently refined as ever, and I can't help but be impressed by how well-made it is in every detail
It's not too heavy because it's packed with features, nor is it too light so that its performance is inferior. This versatile, full-fledged rainwear will be able to handle most activities with just one piece, and while it's not exactly affordable, it's definitely worth it. It's the ultimate example of C-KNIT rainwear, and a formidable competitor to the Montbell Storm Cruiser
Arc'teryx Beta SL Hybrid Jacket
Comfort ★★☆ Waterproof ★★★ Breathability ★★☆ Functionality ★★★ Durability ★★☆ Value for money ★☆☆
Durability that can withstand even the toughest use, and functional beauty that comes from focusing only on the truly essential functions. Arc'teryx, which does not tolerate any compromises, including on price, when it comes to high-end manufacturing that combines these two qualities, needless to say, there are many excellent rainwear models for various purposes. However, it would be too boring to introduce them all, and even if they are good, I feel that introducing a model that costs nearly 100,000 yen here would be a bit of a letdown. So, I will leave that for another time, and this time I will pick out the "just right" models that were newly released this season
The overall structure follows the brand's all-around mountain series, "Beta," and the form and functionality are aimed at a wide range of users. The "SL" designation that follows indicates the lightest category in the series, but 350g is not extremely light compared to the current rainwear market, and it still maintains the minimum level required for "all-around mountain" use. And now, the highlight of the model: it features Arc's signature "hybrid" construction, which combines different materials in the right places
The base fabric is 2.5-layer GORE-TEX PacLite, which combines lightness and weather resistance. Because it's a proven technology, it also has the benefit of being more affordable. Areas prone to chafing, such as the shoulders, are reinforced with C-KNIT, a lightweight yet more durable lining
That being said, it's true that they don't actually use the latest and greatest fabrics lavishly. However, as with all Arc'teryx models, the high level of perfection in each function, such as the three-dimensional cut for ease of movement and the hood that blocks out wind and rain while still providing high visibility, is still a given. That alone makes it well worth considering as the most affordable Arc'teryx hard shell
Patagonia Cloud Ridge Jacket
Comfort ★★☆ Waterproof ★★☆ Breathability ★★☆ Functionality ★★☆ Durability ★★☆ Value for money ★★☆
Until now, Patagonia's Torrentshell model has been positioned as a standard rainwear, but to be honest, I just couldn't stand the sticky feel of the 2.5-layer lining. And it seems the Patagonia Japan ambassador felt the same way. The new model is finally here, a "Patagonia rain gear" more suited to Japan's so-called summer mountain climbing, the result of years of requests from Japanese ambassador Yasuhiro Hanaya and others for rainwear suitable for activities in Japan's rainy mountains.
Developed primarily by the Japanese branch, this jacket features a three-layer fabric that remains comfortable even when wet, yet is lightweight and packable, and incorporates the latest technology to ensure it meets the brand's waterproof, breathable, and durable standards
In addition to being made with high-end materials that are durable and weather-resistant so you can use it with confidence in any situation, the functionality is also simple and orthodox, making it easy to use across the entire field in Japan. It doesn't have any particularly cutting-edge features, but in a good way, I felt like it was another standard item that you can use with confidence
Mountain Hardwear Quasar Lite Jacket
Comfort ★☆☆ Waterproof ★★☆ Breathability ★★★ Functionality ★★☆ Durability ★★☆ Value for money ★★☆
I'm not a fan of 2.5-layer raincoats, but even so, this one has some must-have features, so I chose it again this year. It uses Dry-Q Elite, the flagship of the Dry-Q series, a proprietary waterproof and breathable material, and the fabric is 40D thick, making it suitable for winter. While most waterproof and breathable membranes rely on the difference in humidity inside and outside the garment to allow breathability, Dry-Q Elite allows incredible breathability, allowing breathability to pass through immediately after putting on the garment, without waiting for the humidity inside the garment to rise. In other words, it's supposed to wick away moisture before it gets too stuffy, making it the rainwear I've been waiting for
Although I'm a little dissatisfied with the sticky, coated lining, given that it's a 2.5-layer jacket, its stylish design and three-dimensional cut for easy movement make it a jacket that really gets you excited when you wear it. It's also packed with smart features, such as a precisely adjustable hood, large pockets that double as ventilation, and a double front zipper. Personally, if this were a 3-layer fabric, I'd immediately choose it as my number one pick; I rate it highly for both its design and ease of use. What's more, the pants are so easy to move in that you'd never guess they were rain pants, so I hope they sell more
NORRONA falketind Gore-Tex Jacket
Comfort ★★★ Waterproof ★★★ Breathability ★★☆ Functionality ★★★ Durability ★★★ Value for money ★☆☆
Norrøna, a leading Norwegian outdoor brand, has released a lightweight mountain shell jacket that can be worn all year round, including in the winter mountains. While the basic construction remains largely unchanged this season, there have been some minor changes to the form (although I barely noticed them myself). The proprietary "RGR interlock backer" lining material is similar to other brands' Gore Micro Grid backers in terms of its characteristics, offering high durability, breathability, and lightness, plus the exceptional comfort that only this material offers, well worth the price, which is a major plus point
While the exact thickness is unknown, the fabric is quite thick (and therefore not light), and features include underarm ventilation zippers, pockets positioned to avoid interfering with harnesses, a large helmet-compatible hood, and reinforced shoulders and elbows, making it lightweight and durable enough for use in any field, from summer trekking to winter mountaineering. It's not an exaggeration to say it's almost a hard shell. I wonder how Scandinavian brands can come up with such great colors. I'm in awe

MILLET TYPHON 50000 ST JKT
Comfort ★★★ Waterproof ★★☆ Breathability ★★★ Functionality ★★☆ Durability ★☆☆ Value for money ★★☆
Millet's lightweight, highly functional waterproof shell, which boasted an astonishing breathability of 50,000mm in its previous model, the W7 series, has already been significantly upgraded in every respect
First of all, the previous model, which, for better or worse, had a loose fit around the waist and sleeves typical of Japanese models, has been completely revised, resulting in a stylish design that is more slender and common in overseas models. The new model also retains the previous model's excellent waterproof and breathable performance. The proprietary, ultra-thin membrane, "Dry Edge Typhon 50,000," offers a water resistance of 20,000mm, sufficient for rainwear, while achieving an astounding 50,000g of breathability. The three-layer construction, which sandwiches the membrane between a 15D knit lining, feels even better against the skin than the previous model, resulting in a lighter, softer, and more natural feel. Despite the slim silhouette, the three-dimensional cut and stretchy fabric allow for natural movement while walking, ensuring exceptional comfort. The mesh pocket lining and double front zipper allow for additional ventilation. The hood, with its fine adjustment capabilities and elasticated closure, offers a comfortable fit
Of the models we've picked out this time, this is one of the thinner models, so caution is advised when using it in extremely cold temperatures, even in the three seasons, but it is a versatile jacket that is perfect not only as rain gear, but also for keeping warm in mild weather, as a windbreaker on ridges, and even as an everyday outer layer. Incidentally, as I wrote in my review of this item the other day , be sure to check out the highlight of this series, the "rain pants that can also be used as trekking pants on sunny days."
Marmot Thru Hiker Jacket
Comfort ★★★ Waterproof ★★☆ Breathability ★★★ Functionality ★★★ Durability ★☆☆ Value for money ★☆☆
In their home country of the US, they seem to offer many conventional models as a comprehensive outdoor brand, but in Japan they mainly do licensing. For this reason, when it comes to items planned for Japan, we sometimes see bold designs that differ from the image they have in their home country. The latest model we're introducing this time is one of the ultra-light focused item series that the brand has been focusing on in Japan recently. Therefore, we should point out at the outset that this model is a bit unique, being "for hiking on gentle trails in the snow-free season" rather than being an all-rounder
From the front, it looks like simple GORE C-KNIT rainwear, but there are no pockets to be found. Wondering where it could be, I searched and discovered that there was a ventilation system on the side that opened all the way to the bottom. Furthermore, on the lining, there were inner pockets on both sides, which could be accessed by opening the ventilation system. The cuffs, hem, and hood adjustments were all elastic, and the hood wasn't designed for a helmet. While these features are clearly lacking for basic mountain rainwear, they are actually quite practical when considered in terms of the necessary features for comfortable long-term hiking in Japan's hot and humid climate
However, to be honest, I can't say that this is the only thing you need, so it does feel a bit off topic, but I couldn't overlook the appeal of this bold approach that is specifically tailored for hiking in the snow-free season, which is important for many people. It's definitely a piece of clothing I'd like to try out
finetrack Everbreath Photon Jacket
Comfort ★★☆ Waterproof ★★☆ Breathability ★★☆ Functionality ★★☆ Durability ★☆☆ Value for money ★★☆
Finetrack, which focuses on outdoor activities unique to Japan and continues to bring unique and highly functional gear to the world with its own unique approach, will be introducing their newly redesigned lightweight rainwear for this season
The unique "Ever Breath" material, which uses a porous membrane made of a durable polycarbonate-based polyurethane, maintains its supple three-layer construction and maintains its natural stretchability, allowing for natural body movement and comfortable mobility. The unique "Link Vent" ventilation system maximizes moisture release when worn with other Finetrack apparel. Other notable changes in this renewal include a revised cutting pattern for a better fit, a slimmer silhouette, and the addition of a larger exterior chest pocket in addition to a small interior pocket. It's definitely more comfortable, stylish, and easy to use
Incidentally, Finetrack also the Everbreath Vario , which may actually be more versatile. However, if you were to choose which one to wear this year, the improved comfort and fit of the renewed jacket make it worth sacrificing a little versatility, so we recommend considering this model this time around.
Mont-Bell Storm Cruiser Jacket
Comfort ★★★ Waterproof ★★☆ Breathability ★★★ Functionality ★☆☆ Durability ★☆☆ Value for money ★★★
Montbell's classic rain jacket was one of the first to adopt GORE C-KNIT and was a huge success. It's a long-selling product that continues to be at the forefront of potential buyers thanks to its balance of price and quality, lack of quirks, and many other factors. Now in its third year since its renewal, it's undoubtedly one of the most noteworthy models this year
First and foremost, it's top-class lightness, taking full advantage of the characteristics of GORE C-KNIT. While the 20D fabric isn't as durable as other models, it's more than adequate for three-season warm weather. Details like pocket placement and stretchy cuffs for water resistance are well-thought-out, and it's available in a wide variety of colors. If you accept the slightly unfashionable feel of the body as being roomy enough for warm layers underneath, it's safe to say that no other model offers better value for money. This truly is a classic piece that's virtually guaranteed to satisfy anyone, regardless of their purpose
THE NORTH FACE Climb Very Light Jacket
Comfort ★★★ Waterproof ★★☆ Breathability ★★★ Functionality ★★☆ Durability ★☆☆ Value for money ★☆☆
Featuring GORE-TEX C-KNIT, which dominated the headlines in 2015, this jacket offers an excellent balance of lightness and weather resistance, even among The North Face's many lineups. Its meticulous and classic construction has made it a long-selling item, and while its functionality continues this year, it still boasts top-class quality. Not only is it up to 10% lighter and 15% more breathable than traditional GORE-TEX, it also offers a soft feel and supple comfort, while still maintaining its waterproof, windproof, and durable properties. The helmet-compatible hood and two handwarmer pockets, positioned high enough to accommodate harnesses, make it perfect for activities like climbing. While its relatively thin construction may make it difficult to wear all year round, it's a great all-around piece for three-season activities, snowpack, or other active cold-weather activities
