Comparison review: We compared the lightweight hiking boots that are popular with weekend hikers 2018

Heavy luggage, rough roads... Hiking boots provide solid support for walking in harsh conditions, making them the most important gear for a comfortable mountain hike

Hiking shoes, in particular, are lightweight and soft to wear, like sneakers, and can be used for a wide range of purposes, from casual outdoor activities like camping to day trips or 2-3 night hikes, and speed hikes, so they have become very popular in recent years among beginners and those with good legs alike

Hiking shoes, which are gradually becoming more prominent in shoe stores, come in a wide variety of concepts depending on the purpose and target terrain, such as lightness, comfort, and durability. Of course, they need to fit your foot shape, but the right shoes also vary depending on the purpose and strength of your legs, such as beginners who want to enjoy a leisurely and comfortable hike, or strong walkers who want to walk without slowing down even on rough terrain

So this time, we tried out six mid-cut hiking boots, which are new to the 2018 season and offer a safer and more comfortable hiking experience, by walking heavily on actual trails

About the hiking boots compared this time

In the past, hiking boots were generally thought of as sturdy shoes weighing around 500-1000g per shoe, with hard, inflexible soles. While this is effective when walking long distances with extremely heavy loads, it's honestly too bulky and cumbersome for day trips or light adventures. On the other hand, for a weekend hiker like me, hiking boots are perfect - they can be put on right from the front door, are easy to walk in both city and off-road, are lightweight, non-slip, and provide good foot protection. These days, they're made to last, so once you get used to them, these types of boots are often sufficient even when carrying more than 20kg

So, the criteria for selecting hiking boots this time were the following four points

This category can be roughly divided into two types based on their origins: models that are trail running shoes adapted for mountain climbing, and models that are hiking boots adapted for trail running. In selecting the models, we tried to make the comparison as varied as possible

Test environment

The hiking boots were tested over a three-month period, from May to early July 2018. The test was conducted by the author alone. They were used in the Tokyo area and in the mountains of Okuchichibu and Joshinetsu (around 1,000-2,000m). In addition to hiking a full range of hiking shoes with a load of around 10kg, the author also tried out different boots on each foot, and tested the limits of grip on wet rocks, until he could clearly feel the difference between them

  1. Comfort: Taking into account various factors such as comfort and breathability, how well the shoes will help you walk for long periods of time without getting tired.
  2. The most important factor for walking efficiently and safely on rough terrain, such as bracing yourself when climbing and braking when descending
  3. Stability: Does it reduce heel wobble when landing and pushing off, and support walking?
  4. Weight: An essential element for light footwork and reducing fatigue.
  5. Protects your feet and shoes from unexpected bruises,

Impressions of each model

La Sportiva BLADE GTX®

Comfortable walking and running shoes for today's hikers

This is ◎

This is △

The heel is as cushioned as ultra-trail running shoes and is as comfortable as it looks

Sportiva is always at the forefront of mountain sports such as trekking, climbing, and trail running. This model, which incorporates the know-how cultivated in different fields, is a multi-sport shoe that beautifully combines mountain running and trekking technology

The upper is made of durable mesh fabric, though not particularly breathable. The soft, comfortable fit leaves a very good impression. As soon as you start walking, you'll be amazed at the high level of cushioning provided by the thick, shock-absorbing EVA. Furthermore, the TPU stabilizer that runs widely from the midfoot to the heel firmly holds the heel, reducing wobble when landing and providing excellent stability. This means you can hike long distances safely and without fatigue

What's more, these shoes are comfortable to run in. The back of the ankle is slightly lowered and neoprene fabric is placed there, allowing for good mobility. This means that they don't get in the way while running. The outsole, equipped with "FRIXION" and "IMPACT BRAKE SYSTEM," which have been refined in trail running shoes, showed better grip than expected

The BLADE offers the comfort, stability, and protection required for trekking, while also providing the propulsion, cushioning, and grip required for running , making it an outstanding ``running hiking boot'' among those released in recent years.

adidas TERREX FAST MID GTX-SURROUND

Hiking shoes that retain the feel and quality of running shoes

This is ◎

This is △

It is packed with advanced features, including a stable TPU heel cup, ankle support that combines ease of running with support, and an outsole that takes breathability into consideration

TERREX FAST MID is more focused on running than the previous BLADE .

First of all, it's light at 385g (403g for size 27.0cm). The combination of the eyelets that allow for a firm tightening around the toes and the smooth speed lacing makes for a decent fit. Also, GORE-TEX SURROUND® technology allows sweat to escape from the soles of the feet, so despite the dense upper fabric, there's zero stuffiness inside the shoe. However, personally, I wear wool socks, so I've never had much trouble with stuffiness inside the shoe, so that may have been a bit of a surprise

The highly flexible ankle area was a pioneering feature for a long time, and has been steadily improved to this day, proving to be a proven success. It doesn't feel uncomfortable when running. Other features include a TPU heel clip for high stability and a Continental™ rubber outsole with excellent grip, providing all the essential functionality you need to blaze through rough terrain at high speeds. However, since these are hiking shoes primarily focused on running, it's understandable that they don't offer the protection and stability you need when carrying a heavy load

Although Adidas has already established a solid reputation in the European mountain running field, it still has a relatively small presence in Japan. However, this model really demonstrates the high level of technical expertise of this global sports brand

MERRELL MQM FLEX MID GORE-TEX®

Waterproof mid-cut boots weighing less than 400g! Perfect for light trail running

This is ◎

This is △

The Hyperlock printed TPU heel counter improves heel stability and the fit of the upper while keeping weight down

I'm honestly surprised that a waterproof hiking boot weighs less than 400g. Of course, this is the first time I've worn something this light. The overwhelming lightness of 356g (US9 actual measurement 385g) has a bigger impact than any of the other excellent features. With something this light, the strain of lifting your feet, which is a common problem with hiking boots, is a thing of the past. You can walk with the utmost ease and these shoes are definitely ones that don't tire you out

On the other hand, it's easy to think that pursuing lightness often comes at the expense of comfort. However, this model was highly praised because, despite its light weight, it's still comfortable and easy to wear, surpassing even the most shoddy models. The Hyperlock Print TPU heel counter in the heel and the shoelace structure of the upper, which works in tandem to secure the instep, provide exceptional fit and stability. The mesh fabric, which combines durability and breathability in just the right places, was more comfortable than I expected, even in the hot and humid weather

The cushioning of the sole is quite thin compared to the other shoes in this comparison. The flexible EVA midsole easily transmits the impact from the ground, making it a shoe that you can enjoy wearing while enjoying the sensation under your feet. However, these shoes are not particularly cushioned, and their grip is weak on wet terrain, so they are not suitable for long periods of heavy loads. On the other hand, their unique lightness makes them perfect for light outdoor activities such as camping and festivals, as well as speed hiking in low mountains

Salomon X ULTRA MID 3 GTX®

The ultimate comfort makes everyone want to wear them all the time

This is ◎

The ever-reliable Sensi Fit™ upper provides an unmatched fit and next-to-skin comfort

Salomon's classic hiking boots have been completely redesigned this season. We recently reviewed the low-cut model individually on this site , but after comparing them with other models this time, we were once again amazed at how well-made they are.

First of all, this model has evolved from the context of trekking shoes, and unlike the three models mentioned above, it doesn't place much emphasis on "running." In that sense, it's clearly heavier than the others. However, what more than makes up for this is the one-of-a-kind, exquisite fit that you'll notice immediately when you put them on. The exquisite comfort that wraps around your entire foot, provided by Salomon's more sophisticated SensiFit™ upper structure, is addictive

However, even though they say it's not a priority, Salomon has top-class research and development capabilities in the field of trail running, and they've successfully incorporated the technology they've cultivated in trail running into their hiking boots. For example, the "Descent Control" sole integration technology, introduced in this model, integrates the upper, midsole, chassis, and outsole to improve interlocking, controlling twisting when landing and particularly improving stability on descents. The outsole's lug design has also been revised to make it less slippery on descents, making these boots not only extremely comfortable to walk in for long periods of time, but also to run in

This season, the wide-leg model " X ULTRA 3 GORE-TEX® W " has been added to the lineup, making the new X ULTRA 3 . The price is also recommended for beginners. Packed with the perfect balance of functionality for active hiking, allowing you to comfortably walk long trails and mix in some running where necessary, the shoes are firmly established as a standard hiking shoe.

SCARPA Hydrogen Hike GTX

Tough, lightweight hiking boots that can withstand even the toughest trekking conditions

The heat-welded TPU covering the upper provides excellent support for the entire foot

These lightweight hiking boots, made by a long-established Italian manufacturer with a long history of experience in the fields of authentic alpine boots, climbing, and backcountry, are models with unique features that reflect the company's roots and the characteristics of the region in which they operate

The biggest difference I noticed was the EVA & TPU midsole, which provides high resilience and protection despite its exceptional lightness. If you bend the sole, you'll notice that it's extremely hard compared to other shoes. This increases resilience and also minimizes the impact of the ground. This is a major advantage when carrying a heavy load

Looking at the upper, the nylon mesh and heat-welded TPU upper, which appears to prioritize durability, cushioning, and softness against the skin over breathability, and the GORE-TEX SURROUND® upper, which minimizes stuffiness, give the impression of being more like a mountaineering boot for increased speed than a running shoe for climbing mountains

The only downside is that the grip is not as good as you'd expect from Vibram, and the breathable insole is so flimsy that the toe area tends to crumple under heavy loads and speed (though adding a third-party insole made it more comfortable)

There's no doubt that these lightweight boots are extremely useful for the rocky terrain and steep elevation changes of their home mountains, the Alps. It's a fascinating pair of boots, considering how light hiking boots have become

THE NORTH FACE Ultra Fastpack III Mid GORE-TEX

Long-distance fast-packing boots with high rebound and cushioning

This is ◎

This is △

The midsole with FastForm technology has definitely improved the running comfort of these shoes

The North Face's ever-popular lightweight hiking boots. I've been wearing this model since I started this website four years ago, and I've had a lot of attachment to it. That's why I was a bit surprised when they changed the model this time..

It's a complete overhaul, with everything changed except for the outsole. Honestly, it's better to think of it as a completely different shoe. The biggest highlight of this model change is the midsole, which incorporates FastForm technology, combining rebound, stability, and cushioning. Based on trail running technology, this system increases stability and reduces damage during long, long-distance walking. It's true that compared to the somewhat bland sole of the previous model, there has been an evolution in terms of running performance. And the Vibram® MEGAGRIP outsole continues to provide incredible grip this season, delivering unparalleled traction on everything from dry ground to wet rocks

However, I have to admit that the rest of the shoe, especially the fit of the upper, was disappointing. While the TPU-coated mesh upper is highly breathable, the soft fabric lacks grip across the entire upper, and the sense of unity when lacing up feels different from before. Even when fully laced up, only the instep feels fixed, while the rest of the shoe feels loose. It's possible that the new model no longer fits my foot shape, but I didn't feel any particular discomfort when trying them on, and I don't think I got the wrong size, so this is quite a shock. Sole technology has certainly evolved, but it feels like the shoe's inherent comfort needs improvement

summary

To sum up this season's new models, if you're looking for a well-balanced model for both hiking and running, the La Sportiva BLADE GTX® would be the one to go for. The comfortable upper and the stability and cushioning of the sole make it a high-level choice for both walking and running. If you're particularly interested in running, the adidas TERREX FAST MID GTX-SURROUND is also recommended for its high performance and balance. Similarly, if you're thinking about running, but tend to do more mild activities on milder terrain, the MERRELL MQM FLEX MID GORE-TEX® may be a more convenient option.

On the other hand, if you mainly walk and only run when necessary, the Salomon X ULTRA 3 MID GTX® . My initial review left me with the impression that the grip on wet rocks was a bit weak, but I was surprised to find that it wasn't that bad compared to other shoes. My personal rating has improved significantly since my last comparison review. Finally, I the SCARPA HydrogenHike GTX for people who often carry heavy loads and are good at walking, and who are accustomed to being slippery. If you do, consider changing the insoles to suit your needs.
