10 Pairs of Lightweight Hiking Shoes You'll Want to Wear Out (Under 500g per Pair)

Ultra Fast Pack Mids, KIMG0202which I've been using for the past few years, were in pretty bad shape. Soft hiking boots tend to wear out quickly, and depending on your pace, they can easily wear out in just a year. I'm sure many of you have had similar experiences. Going into the mountains with worn-out hiking boots is like walking alongside the Grim Reaper. I'm here to tell you the truth, so let's go find your next companion.

So, this time I'll be writing about recommended hiking shoes. Just to be clear, I don't think you can really judge whether hiking boots are recommended or not just by walking around the store a little. Therefore, please understand that the following is a recommendation based solely on trying them on in the store and trying them on for a few hours after purchase, and not just on the idea that "these might be good," but on the desire to wear them out

Of course, this site has no intention of just leaving it at that, and we will thoroughly compare and test the recommended candidates listed here and report on them at a later date, so please look forward to that as well

Why do I want to wear out my lightweight hiking shoes?

Whether you're a beginner, a serious hiker, or just a casual hiker, lightweight hiking shoes are a must-have

For those who are not satisfied with nearby mountains and want to take on serious mountain climbing, expensive, sturdy trekking boots (mountaineering boots) have long been the most suitable equipment. However, that doesn't mean that if you have these you'll be fine on any mountain and won't need any other mountaineering boots. For light hiking on day trips or overnight stays in huts, I can't think of anything better than the hiking shoes I'll introduce below

For example, you suddenly realize you have some free time this weekend, so you hurry up and pack your gear the day before. In the morning, you slip into these shoes at the front door and head straight for the summit. Unlike hard trekking boots, they're easy to walk in on flat ground and less tiring, and unlike regular sneakers, they're less likely to slip on rough terrain. Even if they get a little muddy, the waterproof fabric means you can easily wash them off at a water source. Hiking shoes, which offer a balance of ease and casualness, are perfect for hiking in nearby low mountains, as well as speed hikes where you'll need to walk lightly

Another thing is that I think hiking shoes are a good first pair for people who are interested in mountain climbing. One advantage is that you can start with these easy-to-walk-in and safe shoes and gradually get used to walking in the mountains, and even if you buy trekking boots right away, hiking shoes that are useful in nearby mountains will never go to waste. Best of all, they are often quite reasonably priced compared to hiking boots in general

Nowadays, lightweight hiking shoes are a highly competitive category with many new products

Meanwhile, even looking at the outdoor industry as a whole, the hiking shoe category remains an extremely competitive one in 2016. A few years ago, these shoes were treated as mediocre, barely even hiking boots (this is purely my personal opinion), but now even manufacturers that previously only made hardcore alpine boots are rushing to launch new products into this category

This shows that the popularity of lightweight hiking styles such as fastpacking, and outdoor camping among casual enthusiasts who go to outdoor music festivals, is growing and cannot be ignored. Inevitably, competition is intensifying, and new, lightweight, high-performance products with new ideas are appearing one after another, creating a situation that I personally cannot miss

Pickup criteria etc

Nowadays, many outdoor manufacturers are releasing various types of hiking shoes, but this time, I decided to focus on mid-cut models weighing under 500g per shoe, as this was my personal preference. When you hear that under 500g (around 450g) is about the same weight as the men's leather shoes you normally wear, you can get a sense of how light they are. Of course, there are many good hiking boots that weigh over 500g, but please understand that I chose this model because I wanted to compare performance while pursuing the ultimate in lightweight design, and because it is a model that is friendly to people wearing mountain boots for the first time

By the way, when it comes to choosing between low-cut and mid-cut boots, low-cut boots have the advantage of being lighter and allowing for freer ankle movement, making it easier to make precise foot movements, but they also have disadvantages such as the risk of ankle sprains and the ease with which pebbles and debris can get in from the outside. On the other hand, mid-cut models that cover the ankle (which from now on will be called hiking boots, following the overseas custom) have the opposite characteristics. In my case, I don't like to run on mountain trails with small steps all the time, and I've always been prone to sprains, so I prefer mid-cut hiking boots because they offer a little more security

Finally, it's a given, but just to be safe, just because a shoe is recommended by others or is popular doesn't mean it's the right shoe for you. As I wrote about in a previous article , be sure to try them on to make sure they fit your feet .

10 lightweight hiking shoes you'll want to wear out

THE NORTH FACE Ultra Fastpack II Mid GORE-TEX

Lightness ★★★☆☆☆ Stability

First, let's start with the successor model to my favorite lightweight hiking boots, which have been my go-to boot until I replaced them recently. When they were first released, I think there were a lot of people (online) who were put off by how light they were, saying things like, "They're just North Face hiking boots, after all." However, the truth is that this brand has already built up a long history of success, primarily in mountain races, and these shoes are the result of leveraging that know-how to move into the hiking category

The previous model I used was lighter than this one, weighing just 400g, and I was shocked at how light it felt when I walked in them for the first time. The outsole (the part that comes into contact with the ground) is made by reliable Vibram, so it's not slippery even on rough terrain, and the upper is thin but has no wear or tear, proving that they are fully capable as hiking boots

This season's updated model is slightly heavier at 432g. While the exact reason is unknown, the upper material feels slightly firmer than before. The outsole now features Vibram Megagrip rubber, which provides excellent grip on a variety of surfaces. The midsole uses TNF's proprietary CRADLE™ GUIDE technology, which improves shock absorption, stability, and protection, and appears to have evolved to handle even harder terrain in various places

La Sportiva Core High GTX

Lightness ★★★★★☆ Stability

Hiking is often done in hot weather, so your shoes can get soaked with sweat more than you'd expect. That's why wool or synthetic socks are recommended over cotton, and shoes need to be as breathable as possible to keep the inside dry. However, hiking boots face the dilemma of having a waterproof membrane that can hinder ventilation. In 2015, GORE-TEX developed a revolutionary technology called GORE-TEX® SURROUND® . From my own experience, I can say it's undeniably effective, and if you're struggling with sweaty shoes, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend a model incorporating this technology.

The mesh-like resin covering the entire upper not only creates a futuristic impact, but also makes the shoe light, strong, and highly breathable. As a Sportiva fan who has already experienced the excellent grip and impact resistance of the IMPACT BRAKE SYSTEM in the heel, I have no concerns

is different from the SYNTHESIS GORE-TEXⓇ SURROUND , which has been commonly seen in Japan since last year has finally been released this year in select stores . While the performance is virtually identical, the SYNTHESIS is mid-cut, but the heel is so shallow that it could actually be called low-cut. It's like adding a hammer to a demon, like Amuro and the Nu Gundam. I got it without hesitation.

Salewa HIKE ROLLER MID GORE-TEX

Lightness ★★★☆☆☆ Stability

eagerly waiting for these hiking boots to be released ever since I saw them at Outdoor Retailer 2015 in Salt Lake City . The cutting-edge design from Italy is amazing. They're light, stylish, and not just good looking, they're also packed with challenging features.

Vibram's newly developed outsole, the Vibram RollinGait System, creates a clear curve from heel to toe, absorbing shock upon landing and supporting natural weight transfer from toe-off. This reduces muscle fatigue, especially when going downhill (great!). I've worn them a few times now and they're so much easier to walk

There are also optional eyelets attached to both sides of the shoe. By threading the shoelaces through these, you can tighten the entire foot even more, providing maximum support and a snug fit. However, as expected, when you thread the laces through these holes, the shoelaces are not long enough, so you will need to buy longer laces separately. This is a bit of a strange feature, but we'll ignore it for now

Despite their lightness, the upper is a hybrid of suede leather and synthetic fibers, so they feel more like sturdy, lightweight hiking boots than running shoes. While they're not specifically designed for running, they do offer a sense of security that they won't budge even if you use them a little harder

Salomon X ULTRA MID2 GTX

Lightness ★★★☆☆☆ Stability

Salomon has a wide range of mid-cut hiking shoes in addition to this one, but I chose this model because it had the best balance of lightness and stability among the diverse lineup. Of course, the other models are also of great quality. As a manufacturer that has been making crossover shoes between sports and trekking since before this category became popular, they have a long history

What impressed me once again this time was the unforgettable fit of SENSIFIT, the upper fit technology the company has cultivated over many years. The foothold that tightly wraps around the foot from both sides is extremely comfortable and the fit is outstanding. Perhaps because this is a brand that has built up a track record in athletic shoes, the sole is on the softer side of the shoes we selected this time. In other words, while the walking comfort and freedom of movement are high, it seems to be positioned a little further than a full-fledged hiking boot, so as long as you don't make any mistakes in positioning it, it should be a satisfying choice

Mont-Bell Lapland Boots

Lightness ★☆☆☆☆☆ Stability

Montbell is a must-have when it comes to performance, functionality, and cost performance. While they are lightweight, the uppers are heavily reinforced with leather, meaning they don't offer the same level of fit and freedom of movement as softer running shoes. They give the impression of being a lightweight version of trekking boots, so they may be a better fit for those who prefer the durability and comfort of hiking boots

However, the outsole is made with Trail Gripper®, a proprietary technology that provides excellent adhesion and grip even on wet rocks and boardwalks, which makes it well-suited to Japan's humid trails (although it does seem to wear out quickly)

Although it doesn't feel like a particularly narrow foot shape, starting this year they have added a lineup for wider feet, showing their thoroughness. As you would expect from a national brand for all Japanese people, they have not forgotten about low-cut and mid-cut models for both men and women
