[Practical Review] Weighing just 345g and boasting an R-value of 5.5, the Rab Ultrasphere 5 is the new, optimal sleeping pad, breaking the limits of lightness and warmth. [Practical Review]
In the past, it was said that there was a trade-off between "warmth while sleeping" and "lightness of luggage" when camping in a tent. However, in recent years, various manufacturers have been releasing high-end air mattresses that are lightweight and have excellent insulation, and it can be said that it has become much easier to get a warm and comfortable sleep even in the mountains compared to a generation ago
In this "warring states period" of sleeping pads, Rab air mattresses first entered the sleeping pad market just three years ago and have quickly captured the hearts of discerning mountaineering enthusiasts
Its flagship model, the Ultrasphere 4.5 , has been updated in just two years to become the Ultrasphere 5 . When the previous model was released, everyone was amazed at its high performance, and this time too, it has made astonishing advancements.
This time, we were able to check out the true value of this masterpiece mat, which is one of the "must buys" this season, by camping in a tent in a low mountain in early spring, so we would like to thoroughly dissect it, including practical testing in the field

Main features of Rab Ultrasphere 5
The Rab Ultrasphere 5 is an all-season inflatable sleeping pad that combines lightweight, compact design with excellent insulation. Weighing just 345 grams, it boasts an offset air chamber design that physically blocks cold convection by alternating air chambers within the mattress, and TILT technology, a highly insulating design that utilizes heat reflection, achieving a high R-value (5.5) for year-round outdoor use. Its 8cm thickness, flat side baffle structure, and quiet design minimize friction when turning over ensure a comfortable sleep, even on uneven terrain. The slim 2-way valve allows for quick and easy inflation using the included pump sack. Despite all this functionality, it remains surprisingly cost-effective. Even warmer and lighter than its predecessor, this is the ultimate mountaineering air mattress.

Detailed Review
Insulation, weight, and packability: Surprisingly light and compact despite its "R-value of 5.5" that's safe even in winter
The first thing that catches your eye is its storage size. The compactness that surprised us with the previous model is still there in this one, and when packed, it fits into a size (18 x 9 cm) that is much smaller than a Nalgene bottle. Even in a small 30L backpack, it can easily slip into any empty space when packing. With such a small size, you will no longer hesitate to bring it with you

And yet, the R-value, a measure of thermal insulation, 5.5 , achieving a level of insulation that would have been considered top-level a few years ago. I used it in an environment where the temperature dropped into the low single digits, but there was no chill from the ground. In fact, from the moment I stepped on the mat, I felt a warmth, as if the heat from my body was reflecting off the mat. If you're in the Alps up until early winter, or in low to medium-level mountains in the depths of winter, this mat alone will be more than enough to give you peace of mind.
a mat with an R-value of over 5 can be purchased for just under 300g (345g for the regular size) . The moment you put it in your palm, you can't help but smile at how light it is. For hikers who don't mind saving every gram, this weight-to-insulation ratio is undeniably attractive.
As mentioned in the previous version, the secret to this high-level performance lies in the combination of cutting-edge materials and efficient construction that only Rab can offer. The heat-reflective film, which uses the company's proprietary " TILT (Thermo Ionic Lining Technology), " reflects the heat generated by your body inside the pad, minimizing radiant heat loss. The offset air chamber structure prevents convection, ensuring that the air warmed by your body heat stays inside the mat.

The lightweight, highly insulating structure achieved by combining the "TILT" film and "offset baffle structure" is still in good condition

A bird's-eye view of the cross section (side wall) of an air mattress. The offset air chamber structure prevents air convection

The two layers of TILT film inserted inside can be seen slightly through the air holes
This allows for a top-class insulation-to-weight ratio while minimizing weight and bulk
Comfort: 8cm thick, quiet, and flat horizontal baffles with minimal dents for a comfortable sleep
The high cushioning and comfort of this air mattress remain unmatched. With a generous 8cm thickness, your hips and shoulders won't hit the bottom even when you roll over on your side. And best of all, it's incredibly quiet, so you won't be bothered by noise even when you move around on the mattress. The rustling and crunching noises that used to be unavoidable with previous mattresses with reflective film have been effectively suppressed in this model, just like the previous one

It is thick enough at 8cm that you won't feel the hardness of the ground at all
A horizontal baffle structure with horizontal tubes lined up is flatter and has fewer bumps than a vertical baffle structure, allowing for a more natural and comfortable experience when lying down or sitting. However, because the left and right sides of the mattress are also flat, some people may find it easier for their body to slide sideways (when turning over, for example)

The shape of the mat is mummy-shaped, tapering slightly towards the feet, but the toes are not that narrow (see photo below)

The Ultrasphere 5 is equipped with a 2-way valve with a dual "inflation/exhaust" structure, preventing air from flowing back out when inflating. It has relatively little protrusion and is flat against the mattress surface, so it won't get in the way when sleeping or storing it. It's also durable and safe.

You can inflate the mat directly into the valve through your mouth, but doing so will allow moisture from your breath to get inside the mat, causing it to deteriorate. Therefore, the mat is designed to be inflated quickly and easily using the special "Elephant Pump Sack" (photo below) that comes with the product (photo below)

I personally like the large capacity pump sack, and if you fill it to the brim with air, you can inflate it almost to the maximum with just 3 or 4 puffs
Durability: While the limited strength is the only trade-off for lightness, it's an improvement over the previous model
The only concern about this perfect air mattress is its durability. In exchange for its incredible lightness, both the outer and inner linings are made of thin 20-denier material. Laying it directly on rocky or twig-strewn surfaces requires caution due to the risk of punctures. It's primarily intended for use inside a tent, and if you're concerned, we recommend using it in conjunction with a thin closed-cell mat or a ground sheet such as Tyvek. However, the material has been changed from polyester to a 15% nylon blend, offering improved tear strength and flexibility compared to the previous model's 100% polyester (TPU coating)

Differences from the previous model "Ultrasphere 4.5": Warmer, lighter, stronger
briefly summarize the improvements from the Ultrasphere 4.5 . The basic structure, such as two TILT (heat-reflecting films) and an offset air chamber structure, has been retained, but the overall design has been improved significantly through minor refinements.
- Dramatic improvement in R-value (R-value 4.3 → 5.5): The previous model, the "4.5," had an R-value of 4.3, which was already very good for a three-season tire. The "5," however, has an even more refined internal structure, further improving efficiency and achieving an astounding R-value of 5.5.
- Further weight reduction (from 370g to 345g): Despite an R-value increase of 1.2, the weight has been further reduced from 370g in the previous model to 345g (regular size comparison). Generally, to improve insulation, more film or padding is added, making the jacket heavier, but Rab has achieved "warmer and lighter" simply by optimizing the structure.
- Updated fabric material: The outer material of the previous model was 100% 20D recycled polyester (plus TPU coating), but the Ultrasphere 5 it has been changed to a 20D 85% polyester/15% nylon blend, improving tear strength and flexibility while maintaining the lightness of the ultra-thin fabric.

Cost performance: Overwhelmingly high cost performance compared to competitors' high-end models
So far, we've seen that this air mattress offers excellent performance for mountaineering, but the best part is its outstanding cost performance. Below, we'll compare it with three competing high-end models that are currently leading the market
As you can see from the table below, even though the price has gone up a little with this season's update, the Rab Ultrasphere 5 has the best insulation, weight, and price, which is a bit of a bug. Even though it may be inferior to the other three in terms of thickness, durability, and mat width, its overall cost performance is not to be overlooked.

Summary: Recommended for these people
The Ultrasphere 5 which demonstrates high performance in almost every aspect, including lightness, insulation, comfort, ease of use, and price, is undoubtedly one of the best air mattresses on the market today, and we can confidently say that it is a masterpiece that can be recommended for a wide range of activities, from mountaineers who prioritize speed to alpinists and bikepackers. While there are certainly some drawbacks, such as delicate handling due to the thin, lightweight fabric, this is well within the realm of what hikers who prefer lightweight gear can easily handle.
While the previous model, the 4.5, was an "excellent mat for three seasons," the new 5 can be considered a step up from an "ultra-lightweight mat for all seasons that can be used all the way to the depths of winter." In that sense, the Ultrasphere 4.5 , upgrading to the "5" is well worth considering.
