50 Outdoor Gear Items That We Actually Used and Were Impressed with in 2023 & 50 Outdoor Gear Items We Wanted to Be Impressed with [Outdoor Gearzine 100]

In 2023, we encountered many mountain tools and introduced the excitement we felt with them on this site

However, there just isn't enough space to introduce the mountain of new gear that comes out every year, so it's not like there weren't some items we wanted to introduce but couldn't. It's also true that last year, with so many individual reviews, there were more items like that than usual

So, in a first for this site, we will now belatedly introduce 50 items of outdoor gear that impressed us the most out of the many items of outdoor gear that our editorial team actually used in 2023. We will also be introducing 50 pieces of "outdoor gear that we wanted to try" that we were unable to try for various reasons (mainly physical), but that we believe will impress you

Additionally, Outdoor Gearzine's Discord is also collecting votes for "Everyone's Choice Best Gear of 2023" (until January 31st). If you're interested, feel free to become a member and take part in the voting!

Backpacks that impressed me in 2023

1. Deuter AIRCONTACT LITE 40+10 (Hiking/Mountaineering)

Deuter may have a somewhat dull image in Japan recently, but this long-established European backpack manufacturer is still going strong. The comfortable, luxurious cushioning on the shoulders, back, and waist feels incredibly valuable in this day and age when lightness is so highly valued. In fact, it's not that heavy thanks to the lightweight design that's been implemented in various places

2. Durston Kakwa 40 (Lightweight Hiking)

Durston, a brand that has been a cult favorite among UL (Ultra Light) outdoor enthusiasts worldwide for the past few years, has released their latest hiking backpack. Not only is it made from the cutting-edge waterproof, lightweight, and durable Ultra Fabric, but its refined functional beauty, including a streamlined back design that takes load balance into consideration and minimal storage capacity, is simply stunning

3. Hyperlite Mountain Gear Unbound 40 (Lightweight Hiking)

HMG, a familiar name in the UL world, has recently released a new hiking line called "Unbound" series. This backpack retains the basic design that is rustic and rugged, and exudes an indescribable sexiness with its waterproof, lightweight, and highly durable DCH fabric, but has been equipped with new, cutting-edge, sophisticated functions and convenient storage, making it an even more attractive backpack

4. MYSTERY RANCH Bridger 45 (Hiking/Mountaineering)

It combines the durability and comfort of a Mystery Ranch with the lightness and convenience of a running vest. This balance didn't suit me personally with the larger models up until last year, but with this 45L, it fits perfectly

5. Osprey Exos Pro 55 (Lightweight Hiking)

A lightweight backpack is better, but you don't want to sacrifice comfort, durability, or ease of use. For those people, we recommend the Osprey ExosPro 55, a reliable global brand. While it's not the lightest, it's still light enough, with a comfortable back and well-equipped storage. As always, we're impressed by the development capabilities that have made it possible to offer such functionality at such a low weight

OSPREY Exos Pro 55 #Dale Gray/Argham Blue [OS50380001]

6. THULE Topio 30L (Hiking/Mountaineering)

This comfortable hiking backpack from a Swedish manufacturer of backpacks is a great addition to any outdoor adventure. Its tension-mesh back perfectly addresses the weaknesses of backpacks of this type (center of gravity and weight) and adds the sophisticated convenience you'd expect from Thule, making it a truly complete product

7. Zpacks Arc Haul Ultra 60L (Lightweight Hiking)

This ultra-lightweight hiking backpack from Zpacks, a vibrant North American outdoor brand, is also made with the latest "Ultra Fabric" material, ensuring top-class lightness. It also boasts a tension mesh back and adjustable shoulder pads for adjustable back length, making it a truly exceptional backpack

8. Black Diamond Pursuit 30 (Fastpacking)

Black Diamond's "Distance" series of backpacks for speed hiking is popular and highly rated, and I personally considered it my favorite, so I honestly had low expectations for this one, which was secretly released around the same time, but it turned out to be a huge hit. It's based on a running pack and has an excellent body-hugging fit. I especially love the hip belt, which is soft against the skin and provides excellent stability (it also doubles as a side pocket, making it easy to fit and access a lot of items)

9. Paagoworks RUSH 30 (Fast Packing)

Speed hiking backpacks are all the rage these days, but this model was ahead of the curve early on, refining the practicality of a "hiking backpack you can run in." I check it out every time a new model is released, and this one was just as amazing. If you haven't tried it yet, I highly recommend you experience its high level of perfection, with its consistently stable and comfortable fit and its minimalist design for maximum storage

10. UltrApire Epic XT 3.0 (Fast Packing)

UltraApire is a trail running brand with a proven track record trusted by professional athletes. I've been using their fastpacking series, the Epic XT, since the original 25-liter model, but the lineup has expanded year by year, with this latest model now boasting a capacity of 35 liters, enough for several nights of fastpacking. The larger size means more storage options, and the back panel has improved stability, fit, and cushioning to accommodate heavier loads, making it an excellent backpack not only for running and fastpacking, but also for regular hiking

11. ORTOVOX AVABAG LITRIC TOUR 40 (Avalanche Airbag)

The ever-evolving "Avalanche Airbag" has been a big focus this year, with the "LITRIC" series, jointly developed by Arc'teryx and Ortvoek, achieving the expected level of perfection and becoming my new go-to pack for backcountry adventures. The airbag unit is now even lighter, making it even easier to use. Ortvoek is renowned for the high quality of its alpine packs, so it's also perfectly suited to use as a backpack. It also boasts a generous 40L capacity (optional capacity customization is available)

12. Zpacks Multi-Pack (Sub-Bag)

Lightweight and sturdy, it's a little larger than most, and its multiple buckles allow for versatile attachment and carrying options, making it an incredibly convenient sub-bag. I'd been looking for a pouch I could attach to my chest while on the move for a long time, so this bag's perfect size and the convenience of being able to carry it in a way that suits the occasion were a perfect fit. I'm also happy that it's compatible with backpacks from other manufacturers

Inspiring outdoor wear in 2023

13. Rab Phantom Pull-On & Pants (Rainwear)

You won't be able to help but be impressed by the outstanding performance and refreshingly simple design of Rab's ultralight rain shell for running and UL hiking. It's the lightest and most compact, with reliable waterproof and breathable performance, plus exceptional ease of movement and comfort, making it the perfect shell to slip into your backpack when lightweight is your number one priority

14. Zpacks Vertice Rain Jacket (Rainwear)

Over the past year or two, many ultra-lightweight, highly breathable 3-layer rain shells have appeared, not only from large, technologically advanced brands but also from small, garage brands. Zpacks' Vertice is ultra-lightweight (152g) yet uses fabric with high water resistance (over 20,000) and breathability (over 56,000 according to the B1 method). It features underarm pit zips, a dry and comfortable tricot lining, an adjustable hood, a chest pocket with a packable design, and other practical features that make it a great choice. I'd like to do a proper review of it someday

15. Patagonia Untracked Bib (Hard Shell)

Patagonia's long-awaited backcountry snow bibs are made with the new PFC-free GORE-TEX. As a bib lover, these have all the qualities I'm passionate about: durability, comfort, no tightness when bending or stretching, a low profile that doesn't cover too much of the front, and easy access to the toilet. This is a piece that's ahead of the times in sustainability!

16. Rab Generator Alpine Jacket (Cold Weather Synthetic Jacket)

For a synthetic insulation designed for "warmth," I personally think this jacket offers the best performance in terms of "warmth and lightness" and is practical down to the smallest detail. The longer sleeves suit my body type, but I'm also pleased with the design. It's easy to wash, so I find myself wearing it in a variety of winter situations

17. Rab Mythic G Jacket (Warm Down Jacket)

This cutting-edge down jacket embodies the idea that "this is what happens when you push lightness, warmth, and comfort to the limit." It offers exceptional warmth per weight, making it the best choice for those looking for maximum insulation while also being mindful of the weight of their luggage during the harsh winter months. However, this jacket may not be the best choice for those who want not only lightness and warmth, but also convenience and functionality

18. Houdini Pace Flow Houdi (Active Insulation)

This mid-layer was one of the first to use Polartec® Power Dry® Mesh. It's a newcomer to so-called active insulation, offering both moderate insulation and breathability for efficient heat release. When I wore it, it felt more moisture-wicking and quick-drying than the Alpha or Octa, and it felt like it combined the sweat-wicking properties of a base layer with the insulation of a mid-layer to boost breathability. I liked how it could be used in a variety of ways, either on its own or with a shell. Of course, its environmental friendliness and sophisticated design are also impeccable

HOUDINI Men's Pace Flow Hoodie (3 Colors) [SS23]

19. Patagonia Nano Air Light Hybrid Hoody (Active Insulation)

Patagonia's newest addition to their "active insulation" line of warm clothing has been gaining popularity in recent years. It offers excellent warmth and breathability, making it ideal for wearing under a shell, especially in the winter mountains. It mitigates morning chills, reduces stuffiness and discomfort during active activities, and reduces stress while moving. Its lack of weaknesses and excellent balance are exquisite

20. Senchi Designs Alpha 90 Crewneck with Half Zip (Active Insulation)

Portland-based Senchi Designs is another brand that has skyrocketed in popularity over the past year or two. Rumor has it that the explosive popularity of this brand is the main reason for the global Polartec Alpha supply shortage. Even so, Senchi Designs has taken this fabric, which was previously a rough-looking material prioritizing functionality, and turned its texture into a stylish piece of clothing that can be worn both outdoors and everyday, thanks to its attention to detail in color and design. It's impressive how they've managed to turn this fabric, which was previously a rough-looking material prioritizing functionality, into a stylish piece of clothing that can be worn both outdoors and everyday

21. Arms of Andes Alpaca Wool Long Sleeve Shirt: 160 Ultralight (Base Layer)

I personally imported a base layer made from alpaca wool, rumored to outperform merino wool, all the way from Peru and tried it out for the first time this winter. While it's a bit rough around the edges in places, it clearly possesses the same natural properties as wool (warmth, comfort, moisture control, odor resistance), plus the high thermal insulation that only an animal living at altitudes over 4,000 meters can offer. Combined with its fluffy lightness and texture, I sense limitless potential as a winter base layer

22. AXESQUIN Merino Wool Two Toned LS Tee (Base Layer)

In 2023, more and more brands began producing base layers made from Nuyarn, a high-performance merino wool that first blew me away when I tried it on in 2022. I had hoped that this magical fabric, which is surprisingly light, quick-drying, durable, and stretchy despite being wool, would be available in more designs, so I was delighted to see it being made by a Japanese brand that is easy to obtain and fits all body types

23. ibex base layer (base layer)

After much desperation, Ibex is making a comeback and re-entering Japan in 2023. Its return is already exciting enough, but it's back with a more sophisticated and versatile lineup that suits a wider range of occasions, making it a must-have. The Merino Wool series, perfect for any occasion, from outdoor activities to everyday life, is detailed in the review below

24. MILLET Dry Grid Crew (Base Layer)

This fall and winter, Millet's newly developed synthetic base layer has been my go-to. Its hybrid construction, with a special grid-like underside that instantly absorbs sweat from the skin and a polyester surface that quickly wicks it away, is perfect for mountain climbing and trail running, which continues to be hot this fall. It feels drier against the skin than regular synthetic quick-drying base layers, and the three-dimensional, voluminous fabric provides a comfortable, subtle thermal insulation. And surprisingly(?), the design is also sleek, so I wear it every day

25. NORRONA Senja Equaliser Lightweight Long Sleeve (Base Layer)

This lightweight, highly functional base layer has been a staple in my spring and summer activities, from fastpacking to trail running and canyoning. The main material, "Teijin Deltapeak," is lightweight and extremely sweat-wicking and quick-drying, and it's also stretchy, allowing for easy movement and a supple feel. The slim design follows the contours of the body, making it extremely versatile for layering. Furthermore, the fabric used for the rest of the garment is "HeiQ Fresh FFL," a silver-free, anti-odor treatment that makes it comfortable despite being synthetic. It's UV-resistant and made from 100% recycled material with a PFC-free DWR, making it both comfortable and highly functional while also minimizing its environmental impact. What more could you ask for?

26. Ridge Merino Base Layer

This relatively new North American merino wool apparel brand (not yet available in Japan) isn't particularly cutting-edge, but the materials, patterns, and stitching are all carefully and well-made, making it an excellent choice. I found it comfortable and safe to wear in any situation or activity. Personally, I especially love their tights, which have an excellent fit and ease of movement, making them a staple underwear choice this winter. They're also incredibly durable, with no signs of shrinking even after washing, making them incredibly durable

27. NORRONA senja flex1 9" Shorts (Running Shorts)

The running model from Norrona's new trail running series, "Senja," introduced above, was useful not only for trail running but also for a variety of other activities during the hot summer of 2023. Although these are running shorts, they don't have inner spats and are slightly longer, just above the knee, so they fit perfectly for trekking as well. The "Flex 1 Fabric" is also comfortable, being durable, stretchy, quick-drying, and smooth to the touch

28. Patagonia Strider Pro Shorts (Running Shorts)

Along with the Senya above, 2011 was personally a great year for running shorts. This high-end Patagonia model was ideal for running in the wild, with a balanced and high-level range of functionality. Unlike the Senya, it comes with spats and is a shorter 7-inch length, making it more versatile for trail running in hot weather or running around town

Footwear that impressed me in 2023

29. La Sportiva AEQUILIBRIUM SPEED GTX (Lightweight Trekking Boots)

The lineup of Sportiva's renowned masterpiece, the AEQUILIBRIUM, has been expanded! And it's in the speed hiking category, which I'm personally passionate about! So I tried them out first, and as expected, they maintained an excellent balance while improving maneuverability, evolving into a more "runnable hiking boot." I like trail running shoes, and I like not only low mountains but also rocky terrain with steep ups and downs, but I seem to prefer ones that offer as much protection as possible. Outdoor gear that impressed us in 2023

30. Rab Ionosphere 5 (Mattress)

Of all the sleeping pads (mattresses) of 2023, I was most impressed by this one from Rab. It's a well-balanced, excellent product, especially considering its price. Read the review for more details

31. Hyperlite Mountain Gear 20-Degree Quilt (Sleeping Bag)

HMG has finally entered the sleeping bag market! The more I looked at it, the more I realized how incredible the specs were and how much I liked the design, but actually using it was even more impressive. It's filled with 1000-fill-power down with an environmentally friendly CO2 water-repellent finish, and features an even thicker box structure around the feet. By eliminating the back and head sections, the bag has been reduced in weight, resulting in an astonishingly light 570g for the regular size. It functions perfectly when paired with a highly insulating mattress, making it an essential companion for ultra-lightweight hikes in the fall and winter

32. Rab Mythic Ultra 180 (Sleeping Bag)

Although it was released in 2022, I still chose it as my personal favorite spring/summer sleeping bag in 2023. As I've mentioned several times before, it features the world's first "heat-reflective Thermoionic lining" technology, which uses titanium-coated fibers for the outer fabric, and is filled with 900FP down (water-repellent), making it a masterpiece that has all the elements you'd want in a lightweight mountaineering sleeping bag

33. Durston X-Mid Pro 1 (Shelter)

The Durston Tent, which made the name of one of the world's most dynamic outdoor manufacturers known worldwide, was a groundbreaking product that could be called an epoch-making one in the history of outdoor tents in recent years. With a unique and innovative design, cutting-edge materials, and crafted in a sewing factory with some of the world's most technically advanced technologies, this two-pole tent is not only ultra-lightweight and highly durable, but also offers comfortable living space and easy setup. This completely dispels the image of past shelters as being "light but cramped, weak, and expensive." For a detailed look at its secrets, be sure to check out our review

34. Hyperlite Mountain Gear Unbound 2P Trail Tent (Shelter)

This season's much-hyped new product from HMG is a hybrid design, featuring a two-pole triangular roof, single-wall sides, and a double-wall entrance, similar to the Z Packs Duplex Tent and Gossamer Gear's The Two DCF. It's easier to use than the ZP and more livable than the GG, but it's a slightly more refined, ultra-lightweight, and durable shelter than its competitors. It's spacious, comfortable, and highly breathable, with ample space for two people. Two doors make it easy to enter and exit (there's also a generous vestibule). The DCF construction means it won't sag and is highly durable (and yet it weighs just 680 grams for a two-person tent). It's a satisfying tent that can be used almost anywhere, except on snowy mountains

35. Arai Tent SL Dome (Tent)

What's great about it is that it has a simple, self-standing dome shape, but the fabric is incredibly thin and light (980g with tent pole fly). And yet, it's a Japanese-made tent that's reliable in terms of durability, including water resistance (compared to ultra-lightweight tents from overseas). Even though it's a two-person tent, its compact size means it's also great for solo use. The only drawback is ventilation. It was extremely hot in the summer, with heat building up inside. It's easy to use in the coming seasons, such as autumn, winter, and spring

36. PETZL NAO RL (Headlamp)

The PETZL NAO series, widely recognized as the king of outdoor headlamps for its lightness, output, and high-quality light beam, has finally undergone a full model change. To stay on top of the latest trends in headlamps, it's essential to get the latest. The biggest improvements from the previous model include a significant increase in maximum output from 750 to 1500. The front light is now significantly thinner, lighter, and more comfortable to wear. While this alone is a clear improvement, the battery now charges via USB Type-C, making it easier to use, and the battery itself can even function as a portable power bank in emergencies. Perfect for trail running and ultra-trail running, it may be overkill for everyday hiking, but you'll be glad you have it for those rare night hikes or early morning hikes to see the sunrise

37. EVERNEW Ti SOLO pot NH (Cooker)

Evernew's UL Gear always delivers amazing new products that are so innovative they put a smile on your face. This latest model finally eliminates the handle, achieving a light weight of just 76g for a 550ml capacity. By using a silicone band instead of a handle, you can hold it by hand even when heated (without using a pot lifter, though it gets hot), and the clever scale markings and spout, along with other small details, are well-designed for peace of mind. Their tireless pursuit of lightweight design continues

38. Montbell Titanium Alpine Thermo Bottle 0.5L (Thermal Bottle)

It's finally here! The Alpine Thermo Bottle, beloved by mountaineering enthusiasts for its overwhelming heat retention and lightness, now comes in a titanium model. Definitely a must-buy. While not as warm as the stainless steel model, it's still plenty warm, and of course, it retains its ease of use. And the weight that's attracting attention is "Stainless steel: 237g → Titanium: 200g"! Couldn't it have been a little lighter...? That question is rude for someone like me who can't resist choosing to shave even a single gram if there's room to do so

39. Minerva Air Mesh Panel (Backpack Accessory)

I happened upon this while strolling around the Lodge in Umeda during a reporting trip to Osaka, and with a hunch that it might be a good idea, I bought it without any expectations, given its affordable price. It's actually pretty good. It's a little loose when set up, but the mesh itself is light, has a firm three-dimensional feel, and is comfortable with good cushioning. Attach it to an ultra-lightweight backpack with a flat back and it instantly transforms into a highly breathable back panel

40. BLUE ICE Halfang Tour (Crampon)

When backcountry skiing, the amount of safety gear you need to carry with you is increasing, just in case, making it extremely important to keep each piece of gear lightweight. The BLUE ICE Halfang Tour met my needs perfectly. At first glance, you might wonder if it's really built to last, but it actually performed exactly as expected. Its innovative design, featuring lightweight, durable UHMWPE and HTPE straps and eight aluminum prongs, makes it lighter and easier to store than other lightweight crampons, and it's also easier to put on and take off. It's now firmly established as my go-to lightweight crampon for backcountry skiing this season

created by Rinker
¥26,400 (as of 2026/02/06 23:26:05, according to Rakuten Market - Details)

41. Black Diamond Carbon Whippet Ski Poles

This item wasn't released in 2011 either, but it's a new essential item for backcountry skiing. An ice axe is essential for steep backcountry skiing routes, but I found that whippet poles with an axe attached to the pole head are extremely convenient and safe for tricky routes where you're unsure whether to bring one. While the heads are certainly heavier, it's incredibly convenient not only when climbing steep slopes, but also when unintentionally traversing or accidentally falling over, as it means you don't have to take off your pack and stow your poles every time. Ultimately, this leads to weight savings, increased speed, and improved safety

42. SKEATS Claws Alpine Logic (Ski Crampons)

Ski crampons generally have the drawback that the steeper the slope (when the climbing support is increased), the harder it is for the crampon claws to penetrate. These lightweight crampons attach directly to the skis, making up for this drawback. They were released a year ago, but a stronger and sharper alpine model has been released this season, so I was excited to try them out. (Although I haven't used them in particularly difficult situations yet) They definitely improve stability on steep and crunchy slopes. They also weren't as difficult to walk on as I expected. If only the price was a little more reasonable..

43. Insta360 Insta360 X3 (Camera)

To be precise, I bought it in 2022, but I really put it to the test when I went backcountry skiing in 2023. Holding it in my hand like normal and taking a selfie from the front is great, while extending the selfie stick behind my back for spectacular tracking shots—it's amazing how I can freely capture images I couldn't capture before without worrying about the camera's orientation. I'm grateful that it has further broadened the enjoyment of the mountains

44. FLEXTAIL Tiny Pump 2X (Digital Gadget)

An electric air pump isn't essential, but it's handy to have one. The "Tiny Pump 2X," a gadget created by FLEXTAIL, a group of outdoor-loving engineers, has a body smaller than a clenched fist that can easily inflate an air mattress. While there have been other pumps that do just that, this one comes with an LED light that can also be used as a lantern, and what's great is that it can also be used as a mobile battery. It comes with several different connectors, so it seems to be compatible with mattresses from major brands, not just those made by a specific manufacturer (although I haven't tried them all)

45. Nitecore NB10000 Gen 2 Power Bank

This ultra-compact mobile battery is often seen on the gear of ultralight hikers overseas, but is hard to find in Japan. I bought it when I personally imported another product from overseas. When I actually used it, I realized that it's rare to find a mobile battery that combines all three of these features: light (150g), small (about 1cm thick), and has a large capacity (10,000mAh). It supports USB Type-C fast charging, so charging is fast, and it's also waterproof up to IPX5. I wonder why it's not sold in Japan

46. Yama to Michi dw5pocket pants (trekking pants)

The side pocket for your smartphone is truly excellent. You can easily take out your smartphone and store it in the pocket. I wear them often because they have just the right amount of breathability and can be used in a wide range of seasons. I bought them to traverse the Ushiro-Tateyama Mountains and wore them every day for four days, and they were comfortable and easy to lift your feet in. The silhouette is perfect for both the mountains and the roads, and is not too sporty, so I wear them often both in the mountains and in the city (Murakami Hiroshi)

47. Yama to Michi 100% Merino Hoodie (Base Layer)

Made of 100% merino wool, it's comfortable to wear, and with a hood, it's versatile and I love it. I bought it to hike the Ushiro-Tateyama mountain range, and wore it every day for four days, and it was comfortable. It also has deodorizing properties, making it the only choice for longer mountain hikes. I also like the lovely colors that are typical of Yama to Michi (Hiroshi Murakami)

48. OMM SuperSonic Smock (Active Insulation)

This ultra-lightweight active insulation weighs just 188g (actual measurements). I absolutely love how fluffy and warm it feels the moment you put it on. The PRIMALOFT® NEXT absorbs and disperses sweat effectively, whether worn over a base layer or T-shirt or even on bare skin, making it a great choice for minimalist hikers in a variety of seasons and situations. It also has a number of convenient features, including easy packability, a built-in waist belt, the ability to double as a pillow (!), and the ability to extend the sleeves to create a simple frobe (Hiroshi Murakami)

[An honest, self-funded comparison review] Lightweight active insulation perfect for minimalist hikers, as revealed by actual wear comparisons

49. milestone MS-G3 (headlamp)

Milestone, an up-and-coming headlamp manufacturer based in Osaka, has released their new 2023 products, the MS-G3 and MS-G4. While they may not be as powerful as other headlamp brands, they are exceptionally lightweight and compact, and offer unparalleled practicality in terms of operability and price. See the review for more details (by Yasufumi Hisatomi)

50. Evernew GubiGubi (Cooker)

Even if you push yourself to the limits of how much you can cut down on grams, that alone won't make your trip more enjoyable. Just as you want to eat with a bamboo spoon, even if it's a little bulky, there are times when you want to drink sake from the most beautiful vessel possible. The hammered pattern, unique in the world, inscribed in titanium has an indescribable allure that only a Japanese manufacturer can achieve. After eating grilled salted rock trout that I caught myself, the bone sake I drank from this vessel was so delicious. Of course, it's not just the design that's intricate; the ultra-thin titanium is ultra-lightweight, and its compact size makes it easy to carry, making it useful in any situation (Hisatomi Yasufumi)
