[Review at my own expense] Mystery Ranch Bridger 45: The innovative yoke system takes the "tough and comfortable" backpack to a new level

Trends in backpack designs change every few years

If we look back at history, we can see that the shapes of backpacks that are commonplace today, such as the lightweight backpack of the past, the roll-top opening and closing system, and the ventilation packs with space in the back, all started out as a single idea from one manufacturer, which was eventually recognized by users and before we knew it, became established as a ``standard'' that many manufacturers began making (although sometimes they quietly disappear)

And one of the biggest design trends for 2023 is undoubtedly the "vest-style shoulder strap (harness)" we will introduce today. In a nutshell, it is a design that combines wide shoulder straps with large pockets like a trail running vest with a mountaineering backpack

These "mountaineering" backpacks have been around for a few years, but in the past year or two major specialist brands have also started to develop new models, resulting in a wide variety of unique variants that are sure to be interesting for gear enthusiasts for the first time in a while

, we will be looking at the Bridger 45 , a backpack with vest-style straps from Mystery Ranch which was newly released last year and added medium-sized day-use sizes (35 and 45 liters) this spring

Key Features of the Mystery Ranch Bridger 45

This backpack for mountain activities combines high durability, comfortable carrying, and unique, convenient, and versatile storage. Its unique yoke (back system) provides exceptional cushioning and a snug fit, while new vest-style shoulder straps, derived from running vests, are also used. Detailed Review: Walking around Okuchichibu in early spring on the Bridger 45

Materials and appearance: Durability and good looks are great, but beware the weight

First, as always, let's start by checking the exterior

This latest release from Bozeman, Montana, a backpack manufacturer known for its legendary founder, is as good-looking as ever. It features smartly designed pockets with daisy chains, and large side pockets on the front and sides. The back, combined with the sturdy support columns and generous back and waist padding for a 45-liter backpack, creates a rugged, promising impression

The material itself is also durable. It's made of 100D Robic nylon ripstop (recycled), which boasts exceptional tear and abrasion resistance, even among nylon fabrics. The bottom and front (lid) are reinforced with thicker thread (330D), making it one of the most resistant to abrasion and tearing among hiking backpacks in its class. The YKK zippers and Duraflex buckles are also incredibly stable. They're easy to use even with gloves on, and offer reliable durability that won't deteriorate over time

However, the weight of 2kg for a 45 liter size is a bit of a bummer. While most mountaineering backpacks today weigh around 1-1.5kg, this backpack cannot be described as light by any stretch of the imagination. When you hold it in your hand, it certainly feels heavier than you'd expect. While there is an unavoidable trade-off between lightness and comfort/durability, this poses a tough decision for those who want to avoid weight

Comfort: Endurance Yoke shoulder system provides both load support and convenience

The latest rear panel on the Bridger series needs to be evaluated on two fronts

Provides complete comfort and stability under heavy loads

The back and waist area are made of a sturdy steel wire frame and highly elastic padding that ensures breathability, allowing the weight to be placed on the waist while pulling the center of gravity close to the body, making it comfortable to carry without feeling the weight as much as possible

The familiar back adjustment system is still there, allowing you to find the perfect fit for any body type. These are consistent with the concept of "the world's best luggage carrying equipment with the ultimate fit and comfort" that underpins all Mystery Ranch backpacks, so fans of the brand have nothing to worry about

Best-style shoulder strap (harness) that offers unprecedented convenience

And next, let's talk about the new shoulder straps (harness)

As you can see, the shoulder straps have a vest-like design that is modeled after the running vests common in the trail running world, and the shoulders are padded with thick material similar to that of the back and waist, while the area from the armpits down is made up of soft, unpadded mesh material and a large pocket (see photo below)

The large mesh pocket on the front allows you to store most of the items you use most often, from soft flasks to 500ml water bottles and smartphones, and you can easily access them without taking the backpack off. This convenience, which was previously common in trail running, is now becoming standard in general hiking backpacks (currently, this was only possible with optional accessories), which is only a positive, and I personally think it's a long-awaited evolution

However, that doesn't mean I was completely happy with it. For example, compared to a thin, tight-fitting vest like a trail running vest, the volume of the straps means that heat escapes more easily than you'd expect. With a design that assumes you'll be tightening the chest straps like this model, it would be a lie to say that I didn't feel uncomfortable or stuffy. Of course, on the other hand, the warmth can be a blessing in cold seasons, and when using it in warm seasons, you need to consider how to prevent heat escape with clothing, etc

Also, the lower half of the shoulder strap (the part without padding behind the pocket) is unpadded and very soft, so I personally found its flexibility a little lacking when carrying a heavier load. When the load is quite heavy, the soft strap part becomes worn down and starts to dig into the skin

By the way, if you stuff hard items like plastic bottles all the way to the bottom of this shoulder strap pocket, the fit will be significantly reduced and it will rub against your chest and cause pain (left photo below), so be careful not to pack your belongings all the way to the bottom (around the logo) (right photo below)

Storage and ease of use: Unique and versatile storage options with outstanding practicality

Mystery Ranch is known for its unique and practical storage systems, such as the "3-Zip Design," and this backpack is no exception, packed with new pockets and attachments that are always striving for greater convenience

First of all, the main compartment has a standard drawstring closure, as well as a double zipper system that allows the front to be opened and closed wide (see photo below). The front opens wide, just like a travel carry-on bag, which greatly reduces the stress of packing. The opening and closing mechanism isn't just a simple zipper on both sides, but one that allows you to open both zippers with a single action, making opening and closing surprisingly easy. Thanks to this, I use this method to access the main compartment most of the time

Inside the main compartment, in addition to storing hydration, there are two mesh pockets on both sides that are useful for organizing (see photo below). To be honest, I don't know how much use they will have, but since the main compartment opens so wide, it seems like it would be valuable to store small items like gloves, hats, sunglasses, and garbage bags in there

Additionally, the bottom front section has a Speed Zip™ compartment (see photo below) for storing and accessing sleeping bags, etc. There is also an internal divider

The side mesh pockets at the bottom of both sides are deep enough to fit a Nalgene bottle (see photo below). Of course, you can also securely fasten long items with the side straps

The front mesh pocket (see photo below) isn't very stretchy and can fit a light jacket or other items. It's perfect for rain gear or cold weather gear that you want to access quickly, but it's a little small for a tent fly or something similar

The lower straps can be used to secure a closed-cell sleeping mat (see photo below)

There are two loops for poles and axes on both sides of the front (see photo below)

My favorite storage feature is the top lid pocket (see photo below). It's relatively large, has a U-shaped zipper that opens wide, and there's also a mesh pocket with a key clip on the lining, making it extremely easy to use

What's more, this can be separated from the backpack and used as a sacoche or waist pack (see photo below)

There are small mesh zipper pockets on both sides of the hip belt (see photo below). They easily fit snacks and handkerchiefs, but a large 6.7-inch smartphone wouldn't fit. However, since there's a shoulder strap pocket, it's not particularly inconvenient

Finally, of course, it comes with a hydration setting and holes for passing a tube through (see photo below)

Summary: A highly durable, comfortable, and functional backpack with the added convenience of a vest-type strap

The Mystery Ranch Bridger 45 is an ambitious and groundbreaking model that combines the "tough and comfortable" appeal of Mystery Ranch backpacks with the latest trend of "the lightness and convenience of a running vest." It is a backpack with the latest functionality for anyone, from beginners to experienced hikers, who aims to "carry heavy loads over long distances in comfort."

Before actually wearing it, I was worried about whether the running-style harness would actually fit in with a backpack designed to carry heavier loads, due to its innovative design. However, after walking with it, I was convinced that most of my preconceived notions were unfounded, and I realized that it is a highly refined backpack. At the very least, it seems to have been proven that from now on, just because a backpack is worn on the waist does not mean that vest-style shoulder straps cannot be used

The new Endurance Yoke System is a wonderful fusion of the vest-type structure previously used in lightweight backpacks, without losing the "tough and comfortable" feel that Mystery Ranch is known for. This allows you to carry any load comfortably, and the front storage compartment gives you even more mobility, which I felt was an evolutionary step forward.

However, it's important to note that this backpack lacks the lightness of traditional vest-style backpacks. It's best not to use it as a fastpacking backpack, and don't expect it to be lightweight just because it has a vest-style design. That said, it's perfect for mountaineering, hiking, and other tough mountain activities in all seasons, from spring to winter, especially for those who want to carry a lot of gear safely and comfortably
