This year, we'll make our debut at mountain and camping meals! I tried using all the outdoor cutlery.

Your commitment to things will change your taste

"If the tools to eat rice are different, the mood and taste will be different..." I muttered this with my heart as I snuggled with the meat that was being grilled one after another under the twilight sky in Akita Prefecture. After all, meat, vegetables, and rice are delicious, and you use cutlery, which is called a "weapon" in mountain climbing term. There may be various comments such as, "Of course," and "What's more, now...", but please continue to listen to my heart.

To begin with, I was not particular about the dishes themselves, and I was a person who could eat, and would be fine with anything in terms of dishes or cutlery. This is true not only in everyday life but also in the outdoors. Basically, you can just have disposable chopsticks, paper plates, plastic cups, plastic forks, etc. (I guess it's not eco-friendly). It's light when climbing, and can be reused by wiping it.

However, it was overtaken last summer. This was when I camped with a family of friends on the shores of Lake Tazawa in Akita Prefecture. My friend is what is called a "camper." We are particular about our cooking and tools, and we will proceed with the preparations efficiently using familiar tools. As a guest from afar, I was grateful for the ingredients served and was completely in a relaxing mood.

So I thought about it. What is this comfort like? ...The family's consideration, the environment on the shore of Lake Tazawa, delicious food, camping equipment gathered by a camper friend. I realized, "Yes, what is this!" The camping equipment really created a camping feel. For example, they are made of gas lanterns, not flashlights, but hot sandwich makers, not disposable tableware or cutlery, but those made of wara, wooden, and bamboo.

It may vary depending on the time and time, but it was the summer of 37 when I finally realized that my commitment was deepening the taste of cooking and camping.

The first part has been a long way from now on, but this time we will compare various cutlery, focusing on deserted, mountain rice and camping meal debuts. I choose cutlery based on my own opinion, prejudice, and loose standards (I have kept some points in mind), so please read with the lightest mind, just like, "There was a product like this."

table of contents

Recommended cutlery for mountain rice

  • light
  • compact
  • It has functionality
  • tough

I chose this based on the above criteria. It's better to carry your luggage to the mountains with lighter and smaller, and I've never put too many pieces of luggage, so it's even better if one has several functions or functions. Also, since you can't wash dishes in the mountains, you need to be tough enough to wash away dirt that has stuck at home. Of course, it is also important to have a strength that doesn't lead to the spoon being broken.

It's light and tougher than it looks, but also inexpensive
MSR spokes

Weight: Approx. 12g
Material: Nylon

It's just light. As expected of MSR. When stretched, it is about 22cm, so it can be used as a deep cooker with a capacity of 900ml.

When folded it looks like this. If you squeeze the middle tightly, it will fold up, and when you stretch it, it will click and hold.

Sorry for the sudden photo of the cooking, but to compare the usability, I made rice and dried curry inside the cooker, and on the left, chicken breast wrapped in aluminum foil and grilled.

I tried to put a lot of effort into it, but it seemed to break so it didn't break. Looking at the photo, it looks tough, regardless of the appearance, as if the spokes were bent. In the first place, there's no need to force yourself to cut hard stuff with a fork... However, the mouthfeel is gentle and the price is around 600 yen, so MSR does a great job. However, the chicken was difficult to cut...

GSI stacking cutlery set with good knife

Weight: Approx. 19g
Material: Polyester

By pressing the groove part of the handle on the left (the oval part and the small hole) together, you can stack the spoon, fork, and knife on one, making it compact.

Yes, it's now compact. The knife can easily cut chicken and is also very comfortable to use. It was about 15cm long, so there was no particular problem when used on deep cookers.

It looks pop, so it really makes me excited. It's also nice that it's light at about 19g, even though it comes with three pieces, a spoon, fork, and knife. When I was cutting the chicken, I was wondering, "Can't it break?", but I was wondering if I would squeal when some kind of strong force was applied.

Keep it in your backpack and
use it as a companion for your mountain climbing.

Weight: Approx. 21g
Material: Titanium

It has appeared. These are spokes that everyone is familiar with. This is made of titanium, and is stronger than steel (which means it won't break), and is light. After all, it is incredibly strong, so you can use the knife part in a sturdy way.

It may be hard to see in the photo, but chicken is also quite easy to cut. The length of the knife is about 3cm, and you can use it to peel vegetables and remove fish scales. I haven't tried that yet though.

The spoon is large and allows you to scoop plenty of ingredients at once, making it easy to use. However, in the case of deep cookers, when scooping out the ingredients in the back, you have to hold the top of the handle (fork part), which will stain your hands.

If you use an entire spoke, cooking ingredients and juices will be found on both sides as shown in the photo, and even if you try hard to hold only the handle, your hands will get dirty. If it gets dirty, you just have to wipe your hands or spokes, so if you don't mind it, it's not a problem. The little effort is one of the highlights of mountain meals. Even if your hands get a little dirty, it's light and doesn't have to worry about them breaking, and it's also easy to cook, so it's fine to have one titanium spoke in your backpack.

Maybe it's more convenient than a spoke?
Gobite DUO

Weight: Approx. 22g
Material: Nylon

It looks like a regular spoon/fork...

Yes, when you stack them, they come together. It has a cute round look.

I'll try turning it over to the back. It can be stored compactly by sliding the spoon onto the fork.

Joining the handles of the spoon and fork makes the handle longer (approximately 23cm), making it convenient. It can also be used with deep cookers. Gobite's manual states that it is strong enough and has a heat resistance of 200°C. What's more, you can cut ingredients with a fork, so I cut the chicken and it cut smoothly. It's also convenient because it's OK without a knife.

Looking at these features, I feel like they are more convenient than regular spokes. It's a wallet-friendly price of around 900 yen, so this is also a cutlery you should have in your backpack.

Metal-friendly Subposis spoon
UNIFLAME FD Silicone Spoon

Weight: Approx. 22g
Material: Nylon/Silicon rubber

It looks like this when folded. As you can see, it comes with a storage case, but it's bulky so I don't think I need it...

I stretched it out. Approximately 23cm long. It is about the same length as an MSR, so it can be easily used with deep cookers. Secure the metal on the right by sliding it towards the spoon side.

The part that touches the mouth is made of silicone, so the mouth is gentle. It does not make a ticking metal sound when you touch a cooker or dishware. That means it won't hurt the cooker either. What's more, it's a gentle cooker-friendly product, as it can be scooped off and eaten thoroughly, so it doesn't have to be dirty from the cooker.

However, since it is a soft material, it is hard to resist hard things, so I think I'll prepare the main product separately and use it as an auxiliary. It's light and can you prepare it as a cleaning role?

Powerful Transformers with Five Birds of One Stone
-Outdoor-

Weight: Approx. 24g
Material: Nylon

This spoon is

Become a fork

It became a knife and tongs. This cutlery has four functions: spoon, fork, knife and tongs, and looks like a Transformer. At first I was confused, thinking, "How should I use it...", but once I read the instructions carefully and get used to how to use it, there's nothing I can do about it.

This is being used as a spoon. However, according to the official website, "highly fluid liquids such as soups cannot be scooped." Turn the part with "xing" written on top right over and over to the back

It will become a fork. It's fine to stick it hard into chicken.

I used tongs and a knife to cut the chicken easily. The web has announced that "it's strong so it won't break even if a certain amount of load is applied. Also, even when assembled or disassembled, it won't break even if it is handled roughly to some extent." Sloppy! I didn't know how to use it at first so I ended up disassembled it roughly, but it was fine. Incidentally, in the videos on the web, I force them to use pliers (!), but of course it won't break.

As you can see, I was able to grab the beans with tongs. This means that if you use it well, you may be able to use tongs as a chopstick. This item will bring you a little childish touch by disassembling and assembling cutlery.

UNIFLAME FD Spoon & Fork Set Titanium for mountain meals in everyday life

Weight: Approximately 35g
Material: Body/Titanium Pattern/Stainless steel

It's time to fold. Like the silicon spoon mentioned above, it comes with a storage case, but I think I don't need it.

This is also fixed by sliding the metal on the right towards the spoon/fork side.

The pattern is not straight but has a slightly curved finish, so it fits comfortably in your hand.

Instead of using a knife, try cutting chicken with a spoon. It doesn't cut like a knife, but since it is made of titanium, you can use it without worrying about it breaking.

A spoon and fork are about 35g, 21g of titanium spokes, and 12g of MSR spokes, so when comparing these, it feels a little heavy, despite being just 10-20g different. Once you put it in your backpack, you won't be concerned about the weight that much, but it can also be compact and is more suitable for cutlery in everyday life. For example, "I want to experience the atmosphere of mountain meals with my lunch box." It might be perfect for those people.

Recommended cutlery for camping meals

  • Make camping meals even more delicious

That's the standard. The environment is different from when climbing, so don't think about it too much, and as long as you think, "The food is delicious," that's fine. Even more good is the material that's extra tough. These days, not only family camping but solo camping is also popular. Is there any cutlery that makes a single meal feel like it's "delicious..."? !

This is the first step towards camping meals:
Snow Peak Whopper Weapons

Weight: Approx. 43g
Material: Titanium

When it comes to camping, Snow Peak is the best. That's why we'll also compare Snow Peak cutlery. I'm a fan of it, but at some point I get excited when the cutlery says "snow peak."

Comes with a storage case that fits spoons, forks and knives in one.

The cutlery is perfect for use. The material is titanium, so it is guaranteed to be tough. With this, you'll probably have no trouble eating anything (from the official website). As you can see, it's just an ordinary dish, but it feels like you're eating high-quality food. The price is a little expensive at around 3,000 yen, but the material is long-lasting and the design is simple, making it a recommended model for camping meals.

Natural materials are gentle on the environment and
to Go Ware Classic Bamboo Cutlery Set

Weight: Approx. 45g
Material: Bamboo

Cutlery made from natural ingredients is finally here. Just using cutlery made from natural ingredients will add a great feeling to camping. The engraving on the pattern "To Go Ware" is also a boost of excitement, just like the engraving on "snow peak."

It also comes with a storage case. There is plenty of space in the case, so it's easy and good to be able to hold it all together. Comes with a removable carabiner. It's nice that you can always hang and carry it around.

The sturdy bamboo material makes it easy to cut chicken. The mouthfeel is very gentle and does not easily damage the cooker.

It's really comforting to have chopsticks. The rice and chopstick set is a classic forever. The texture is finished to show the true texture of bamboo, making the rice even more delicious. This is especially true when used in nature. It is also recommended to use it everyday to enjoy the feel of camping meals every day.

summary

I quickly tried using nine types of cutlery. I do mountain climbing and camping too. Therefore, picking out our recommended cutlery is quite difficult. There are many types of cutlery, and unlike other tools, it can greatly enhance your personal preferences. Now we're entering the long-awaited mountain climbing season, and we'll start off looking for cutlery for mountain meals!

Matsubara Mitsuoko

These days, I'm still curious about the northern world, such as Iceland and Alaska. However, if possible, I would also like to dive into the seas of the Galapagos Islands. This is the sixth year since I started to explore Japan's 100 most famous mountains, visiting places I want to see before I die. I climb mountains all over the country using Hiraide model shoes (shoes chosen by alpine climber Hiraide Kazuya). I'm an Osakan who loves craft beer and yogurt.
