Climbing with Workman! I tried out all the light shorts and shorts that could be used in the summer mountains.

This year, I'm looking for a workman at my own pace and can be used in the mountains.

Workman is still popular as ever, but as you check out the new releases every season, it's not surprising that new models come out every year. We'll be looking at past reviews of these useful classic items that we've discovered up to now , but for this season we've changed our focus a bit and aimed at shorts (shorts) that can be used for intense outdoor activities such as mountain climbing, fast packing, and trail running.

As a prerequisite, long pants are the basic way to wear mountain climbing. Although it's hot when the sun comes, the mountains are chilly even in the middle of summer, and there is a risk of UV rays and pests when the sun comes out. The weather is not stable either. Furthermore, there are not always comfortable mountain trails, and if you encounter a bushy trail that is not well-maintained, you are prone to getting injured. Given these risks, long pants are safer when climbing or hiking. I also wear long pants for most mountain hiking. However, midsummer trails are definitely cool and easy to walk in, with half pants and shorts being the hottest and hottest weather in recent years, and it's not uncommon to walk in the mountains in intense activities, such as midsummer runs and speed hiking, especially in mountainous areas where you often go, walking in shorts or shorts plus spats. To be honest, I personally don't want to spend too much on shorts I want to use in such limited situations. This is the theme of this article: Workman's turn to come in.

However, even if you take a quick look at the entire recent new release, there are not many that are perfect for mountain climbing or trekking, and I still get the impression that there is a wide range of leisure items such as camping, which is currently a huge hit. In the midst of all this, will you be able to come across some great value hiking shorts that are satisfyingly functional? Please come straight away.

Review of Workman's light-hearted shorts and shorts that can be used in the summer mountains

AERO STRETCH Climbing Shorts (Recommended for Mountaineering ★★★★☆) 1,900 yen

Comfort◎ Ease of movement◎ Convenient features△ Versatile & design◯ Breathability△ Quick-drying◎ Water repellency×

Favorite points

  • 4-way stretch and 3D cutting makes it easy to move around
  • Slim fit but comfortable to wear
  • Not too long or too short, just the right length
  • Lots of pockets with a zipper
  • Fabric durability

Interesting points

  • Low breathability and tends to get stuffy
  • The elastic at the waist is loose and the attached belt is useless (belt required)
  • A little heavy
  • There is no calm colouring
  • Water-repellent pockets get in the way when walking

A short version of "AERO STRETCH climbing pants," which I've been my favorite since the beginning of featured Workman on this site. Despite its slim silhouette, it has 4-way stretch and a three-dimensional cutting with the inseam gusset crotch, making it easy to move around as usual.

It is long enough to make your knees slightly protrude, so there is no catch when lifting your legs. In other words, it fits perfectly with activities that require a lot of movement in the lower body, such as mountain climbing.

There are also many pockets, and each one has a proper zipper except for the back, so there is no need to worry about things falling off.

Of course, there are some things that bother you. The most unfortunate thing is the waist construction, with loose elastic back, which makes it easy to fall off against intense movements and sagging quickly.

The relief is that it comes with a belt loop, so in my case I decided to cut it off without using the standard belt (photo below) and use my own belt. This will give you a fit that won't slip even in intense activities.

Also, since it is blended with polyurethane, the fabric is slightly heavier and has less breathability, making it easy to get stuffy (hot). You can positively think that it can be used not only in the middle of summer but also in a wide range of seasons, but from the perspective of shorts that are perfect for summer, this is a relatively negative point.

By the way, these pants have a smartphone or an air-conditioned battery inside? It has a water-repellent sacoche, but even when I tried to use it on mountain climbing, it was just a hindrance when I was walking, so I took the plunge and took the plunge.

These shorts are as useful as you would expect in terms of comfort and ease of movement, and if you are not satisfied with the slightest amount of sweat, we recommend this time. Just as it is, it's perfect! That's not the case, so I recommend that you take the plunge and customize it in your own way.

Summer 2-way pants ACTIVE TYPE (active type) (recommended climbing level ★★★★☆) 1,900 yen

Comfort◎ Easy to move◎ Convenient functions◯ Versatile & design△ Breathability△ Quick-drying◯ Water repellency×

Favorite points

  • Although it is 4-way stretch fabric, it is less likely to deteriorate over time.
  • Long and short 2-way type
  • Fabric durability
  • Elastic and belt fits the waist

Interesting points

  • The shorts are only the size of a shorts, and slightly longer for running
  • The crimp tape is too noticeable
  • The ventilation is not that effective and is a little too hot for use in the middle of summer

Workman has previously added a number of 2-way pants that can also be used as shorts, but this season we have tried out the new ones.

What draws attention to this model is that it uses a proprietary stretch fabric called "TRICO TECH." Although it is a 4-way stretch with a high elasticity of up to 140%, this fabric is expected to be free from heavy and easily deteriorated polyurethane, and even when you try holding it, it doesn't feel very heavy for the thickness and the large amount of parts (L size measured 357g). The stretchy nature of the rumors is surprisingly easy to walk in.

The length is shorts long enough to cover the knees, so it can easily get your knees caught and make you uncomfortable, but despite the slim hem, I didn't notice any cramped feeling.

The waist area is orthodox with elastic elastic and the included belt. The tape circumferences the waist properly, making the belt less likely to slip, making it durable and safe.

The summer 2-way pants (ACTIVE TYPE) have been made of easy to move in and comfortable, durable and stable, with plenty of pockets, and can be used in two patterns, long and half, so you can use them all year round, making them suitable for wearing all year round. The ACTIVE TYPE pants are a bargain for this season. It was a piece that I'm sure I'll be using not only in the summer but also in the future. However, considering the length and lack of ventilation, I felt that running and activities in extreme heat were a bit harsh. Finally, I hope that the design with the crimp tape too noticeable will become even more sophisticated.

AERO STRETCH Shorts (Recommended for mountain climbing ★★☆☆☆) 1,900 yen

Comfort◯ Ease of movement△ Convenient functions△ Versatile & design△ Breathability◎ Quick-drying◎ Water repellency×

Favorite points

  • Thin and lightweight
  • Excellent breathability and quick drying
  • It is stretchy, but it is less likely to deteriorate over time.
  • Pocketable specification
  • Shorts/Shorts and adjustable length

Interesting points

  • The durability of the zipper and snap buttons, and the sewing of the pockets are poor.
  • The waist is not elastic
  • The hem is too narrow and difficult to move

After all, I'm going to wear it in the summer, so of course it's better to be cool anyway. In that sense, these are the coolest pants this time. The AERO STRETCH shorts are made of thin, lightweight, uneven fabric with a textured texture, and are made with mesh fabric in places, so they are breathable and won't get stuffy. It also dries quickly.

On the other hand, the slim fit silhouette is very narrow at the hem, and in addition, the stretch is modest compared to the rest. I felt it was a bit harsh in terms of ease of movement during hiking. Incidentally, there are snap buttons on the sides, so you can also use it by hemming it from below the knee to above the knee. This may be great for those who are happy, but from the perspective of using it in active situations such as mountain climbing, I would like it to be a little more practical now.

It's an excellent light and cool shorts. It seems to be quite comfortable to use if it's an activity where you don't run or lift your legs, but it was a shame for mountain wear, which requires movement and durability.

AERO GUARD STRETCH Shorts (Recommended for mountain climbing ★★☆☆☆) 1,900 yen

Comfort △ Ease of movement △ Convenient functions ◯ Versatile & design ◎ Breathability △ Quick-drying ◯

Favorite points

  • The design is sophisticated and you can enjoy a variety of styles
  • Lightweight, short length and good ventilation
  • Lots of pockets
  • Insect-repellent DIAGURD®

Interesting points

  • The large cargo pockets on both feet are convenient for camping, but not suitable for activities such as mountain climbing.
  • The elastic at the waist is too loose, so pants tend to slip off if you put things in your pocket or use them in an active way (it is not possible to follow even if you tighten the belt separately)

These AERO GUARD STRETCH shorts have been developed as shorts that are more "camping" than those that Workman has been putting a lot of effort into in recent years.

Of the last ones, the length is the shortest and the hem is loose, so at first glance it's extremely airy and easy to move around. However, the fabric is made of a polyester and cotton blend, so it's fine as long as it's smooth, but as I started to sweat, the stickiness became stronger and I could feel the fabric tensile due to movement.

In the first place, the biggest feature of this product is insect-resistant fabric, which is less likely to attract insects, and it is not reliable on it, and if you walk with things inside the huge pockets on both sides it will get in the way. Unfortunately, it is not that effective when climbing, so it may not have been mentioned in this topic.

I like the colour and design, so be sure to use this for camping or playing in the water, not for hiking or running.

Heat-shielding DOUBLE MESH ACTIVE cross shorts (recommended climbing level ★★★☆☆) 2,900 yen

Comfort◯ Easy to move◎ Convenient features△ Versatile & design△ Breathability◯ Quick-drying△ Water repellency◯

Manufacturer's Points

  • Integrated shorts with inner pants, no spats required
  • Heat-shielding and cooling material effects make it less sensitive to heat

Interesting points

  • Putting a plastic bottle in the left pocket makes it difficult to walk, and the right pocket doesn't have a smartphone in the first place, so all bicycle parts are unnecessary.
  • It cannot be separated from the spats, so it is not quick-drying.
  • The narrow hem makes it slightly cramped when moving large

These pants are not suitable for mountain climbing or hiking, but they may work well depending on how you use them. I tried to cover it with this expectation, but it turned out to be a very promising bargain. In any case, it is packed with a variety of non-standard ideas, and although each has its own successes and failures, it is very unique and can be "alright" depending on how you use it.

Among them, the fact that it is integrated with inner spats is what makes it the most unique and I liked it. At first, what about the voluminous texture of the fabric? I thought so, but when I walked, I was surprised to see that these spats are made of a cool material that touches and is surprisingly cool. It suppressed muscle shaking and allowed for unexpectedly more comfortable and stable walking. The hem was slightly narrow, but aside from that, it was comfortable to wear.

The fabric itself is breathable, and there is ventilation at the back, so even during summer hiking, you won't be too concerned about stuffiness. This time, the only one this time is water-repellent on the outer material, making it difficult to get wet, which is what makes it the most appreciated for mountaineering pants.

On the other hand, for bicycles? Perhaps because it is being developed as a product, it is a shame that the various holders installed in both pockets are not worth using at all. The "PET Bottle Holder" is large enough to hold a 1-liter plastic bottle, but of course it is not used on hiking, so I took the plunge and cut it off later.

As for the "smartphone pocket" on your right thigh, it's hardly possible to use a smartphone in terms of size. That's why I'm sorry, but let's remove it.

The short length and spat design make it cool even in the middle of summer, easy to move around, and has a waist fit (with belt loops), making it perfect for active outdoor activities such as trail running.

summary

After walking around this time with five models, I found a variety of practical pants that can't be seen by the specs alone. From the AERO STRETCH climbing shorts and summer 2-way pants ACTIVE TYPE which are all excellent , to models that are easy to use for AERO GUARD STRETCH shorts and AERO STRETCH shorts heat-blocking DOUBLE MESH ACTIVE cross shorts ), all of which are cost-effective and easy to wear as long as you don't use them correctly.

Of course, I've mentioned a lot of details, but in addition to the technical aspects of simple things like shorts, it's also important to be comfortable to wear without thinking about anything. Summer continues. We hope this review will help you choose the perfect shorts for each of you. Have a wonderful summer.
