This year, I tried out Workman's new running wear for road and trail runs
This season, we have continued our annual Workman Check, which has become a familiar sight on our website, with running gear, as we did last year, and for the first time in two years, we have also included hiking and mountain climbing items. This is the first part, so we will start with a review of running and trail running gear
The test period was about two months, from April to June. The reviewer was Tojo, a writer for this site, a trail runner, and a die-hard Workman user. We had him live a life dominated by Workman products, from road to trail and everyday life, and thoroughly investigated how the shoes felt to use
In addition, the items reviewed last year will continue to be on sale this year, with a few exceptions, so if you're interested, please take a look.
Kazuya Tojo
He grew up in Ibaraki Prefecture and focused on swimming during his student days. He made his triathlon debut as a working adult. In his first year as a working adult, he completed the first Japan Mountain Endurance Race (Hasetsune). He became fascinated with the sense of accomplishment that comes with mountain sports. In his 30s, he moved to Saitama Prefecture and became independent. After being shown around Oku-Musashi by Mr. T, he became fascinated with trail running and ultramarathons. He currently focuses on domestic trail races. He has completed consecutive long races in the Shinetsu Gogaku, Joshu Hotaka, and KOUMI100. He also provides race support for the NPO Koedo Oedo Trenic World and the NPO Sainokuni Ultra Project (SUP). He is also dedicated to educating people on how to maximize the performance of their gear and ensure safety in trail running

Shirts
This time we tested four models, including both the new and updated models
I evaluated the pants for their stretch and balance around the shoulder blades when using them for running. First of all, I felt that all models this season were more comfortable to wear. This is because the flat seams (stitching on the gusset) have been improved and are thinner and flatter than before. Many of last year's models had thick stitching that caused chafing, making them unsuitable for long runs like full marathons. However, this time I found a model that was comfortable even when running over 50km
Evaluation of each model
MOVE ACTIVE AIR Long Sleeve Crew Neck
Moisture absorption ◯ Quick drying ◯ Breathability ◎ Stretch ◯ Soft to the touch ◯
This hybrid model features extensive mesh on the back and sides. The polyester fabric on the back is breathable, making it easy to forget you're wearing long sleeves. The mesh doesn't feel too cool to the touch, making it perfect for running and preventing fatigue. The front is a polyurethane and polyester blend, so you can't expect it to be particularly breathable or absorbent, but it's well-balanced enough to wear from spring to autumn
MOVE ACTIVE ICE Short Sleeve Mid-Neck
Moisture absorption △ Quick drying ◎ Breathability ◯ Stretch △ Soft to the touch △

Lightweight, thin, and cool to the touch from front to back. Comfortable on the road, but not recommended for trail use
This is an ICE model with a unique feel and a strong cooling sensation. When running on trails, the cooling sensation was too much and I ended up getting cold from sweating, so I don't recommend using it on the trail. The fabric is so thin you can see through it, and its breathable and lightweight construction makes it ideal for road running. The raglan sleeves allow for easy arm movement, and the compression provides a beautiful silhouette, making it a piece that is reminiscent of sportswear. If you're looking to achieve a toned body, this is the model you want
Cooling compression short sleeve mid-neck
Moisture absorption △ Quick drying ◎ Breathability ◯ Stretch △ Soft to the touch △
The difference from the previous model is that the stitching on the gusset is flatter, which reduces contact with the skin and reduces stress. This effect is significant; the previous model felt uncomfortable after a 10km run, but the new model had no issues even after a 30km run. Another unique feature is that the mesh on the armpits is placed on the front, which helps to expedite the escape of sweat. Unfortunately, like the previous model, it feels tight around the shoulders, so it falls just short as running gear
Cool Reflective Frank Short Sleeve T-Shirt
Sweat absorption ◎ Quick drying ◯ Breathability ◯ Stretch ◎ Soft to the touch ◎

The natural comfort and quick-drying properties make it suitable for all-around use. The reflections on the back and sides are also great
This versatile shirt is perfect for trail and road riding. Its softness and stretch make it easy to move in. While its quick-drying and breathability are average, its excellent moisture absorption and breathability make it comfortable even when wet, providing an excellent balance
This was my natural choice when I was planning to ride more than 50km. It was the cheapest of the four, but I was surprised to find that this stress-free shirt, the one I wore the longest, was only 580 yen. With plenty of reflectors on the front and back, I've found the perfect partner for riding from morning until night
Socks
I tested two types of five-finger socks (ankle models) for running on both road and trail terrain. I rigorously compared them with the high-performance socks I tried last fall to see if they were usable. The common feature is that they are both summer models with excellent breathability, featuring breathable mesh on the instep. The lack of functionality such as anti-slip soles on the soles makes them more suitable for endurance running

Foot Armour Mesh 3 Pairs
Sweat absorption △ Quick drying △ Breathability ◎ Hold △ Durability ◎

Perhaps because it's a loose, one-size-fits-all design, I find myself noticing slippage during tough runs
These socks boast excellent wear resistance and durability. They're of a quality that's sufficient for a 20-30km city run. One thing that bothers me is that they're loosely made and only available in one size. After long-term testing, the fabric stretches and feels loose inside the shoes. In rainy weather or when wet with sweat, the excess fabric can cause problems. For 499 yen for three pairs, they're a satisfying choice, depending on your environment
16355 Action Save Short Type 2 PAIRS
Sweat absorption ◯ Quick drying △ Breathability ◎ Hold ◎ Durability ◯
The arch support design helps reduce fatigue. The support is strong from the tips of the five toes to the ankle, so they don't get in the way inside the shoes. I didn't feel uneasy when using them on the trail. They're just the right thickness and offer cushioning, so I recommend them for beginner trail runners. The cotton-containing fabric is comfortable to wear, but they don't dry very quickly, so it's best to avoid splashing in water or wearing them in the rain. Long-term testing has shown that they're durable and offer excellent value for money. (As of July 4, 2019, they're not available in the online store.)
Running pants
These two new models were tested, with strict evaluations of comfort. They have two things in common: 1) a semi-short type with an inseam of about 25cm, and 2) pockets on both sides, which are convenient for running around town
Evaluation of each model
1182 MOVE ACTIVE Shorts
Moisture absorption △ Quick drying ◯ Breathability △ Easy to run ◎ Comfort ◯
These shorts are made of 100% polyester and are not breathable or sweat-absorbent, but they are soft. I was a bit worried about wearing them in midsummer, but the thigh opening is wide and breathability is not an issue. Moreover, the opening is semi-short, but it is designed to allow for comfortable walking. Even when I was sweating profusely on the trail, the fabric didn't cling to my thighs, which was annoying. They were relatively easy to wear even on a 50km long run, and I didn't have any problems with them rubbing against my skin. There is a zippered pocket on the back for storing small items. These pants have everything you could want. (As of July 4, 2019, they are not available in the online store.)
Mapping Mesh Shorts
Sweat absorption ◯ Quick drying ◯ Breathability ◎ Ease of running △ Comfort ◎

If you prefer a slightly tighter fit, try this one. It doesn't flap around much, is breathable, and is comfortable
These shorts are made of 100% polyester, but they use mesh fabric for excellent breathability. The thigh opening is narrow, which made it difficult to move around, but the stretchy material meant there was little stress. They are slim-fitting, so you could probably go up one size for running. The only drawback is the elastic waistband, which is fine for running around 20km, but unfortunately doesn't suit long-distance running, as it rubs against the skin. The stylish design is sporty, making them perfect for jogging
MOVE ACTIVE Full Leggings
Sweat absorption ◯ Quick drying ◎ Breathability ◎ Easy to run ◯ Comfort ◎
Continuing from last year, these are highly recommended compression tights for running. An improvement from last year is the addition of mesh fabric on the sides, which improves breathability. They're now even more comfortable for midsummer runs. They're still quick-drying, so you can wear them as full leggings without feeling uncomfortable. The carefully crafted cut allows for ample room in the crotch area, so they don't get in the way of lifting your legs, making them easy to use for trail running. Reflective material is placed in three places, so you can run safely at night. There's a zippered pocket on the hip, so you can easily carry your keys and coins with you on a light jog. As convenient as ever, they're still available at this price
Gloves
A new pair of fingerless gloves has finally been released. We tested them to see if they could be used as trail running gear. They are made with a cooling material for summer use
Cool-touch Cut Gloves
Moisture absorption ◯ Quick drying ◎ Breathability ◯ Grip ◎ Durability ◯
Workman offers a wide variety of gloves, and their sturdy construction was a perfect match for these trail running gloves. The back of the hand is quick-drying and breathable, making them perfect for use in the rain. The towel-like material on the thumb is convenient for wiping away sweat. The palm has a thin cushion and is non-slip, giving a good feeling of responsiveness. This is an excellent product that will surprise you with its high level of finish and low price
summary
Workman's serious development of sports gear has been featured in the media recently. Many of the gear tested this time are new models, and they are sure to exceed user expectations. There's no doubt that they offer good value for money, but I have a feeling that people will no longer choose them because they're cheap, but because they're good quality. It looks like we'll continue to keep an eye on Workman's sports gear in the future
