Review: NEMO Hornet Storm 1P A lightweight solo tent with a high level of balance that is close to perfection

written by Outdoor Gearzine Editorial Department

NEMO, an emerging outdoor gear manufacturer founded in the United States in 2002, is a very new manufacturer that has been using unprecedented and original ideas, with the tools and functions needed from an adventurer's perspective ever since its launch. They have only started a manufacturer with tents, and in particular, they continue to release new products and updated versions of existing tents every year.

Among them, the Hornet Storm is a lightweight model for ultra-light backpacking, even within NEMO's tent lineup. The 2019 model has been updated with several updates and is highly complete, and has become a typical tent from NEMO, which is lightweight, and can be used safely by not only ultra-light hikers but also by a wide range of users. This time, we will share our thoughts on actually using the Hornet Storm solo tent.

Rough features of Hornet Storm 1P

The Hornet Storm 1P , the lightest solo tent in NEMO . Although it is a self-supporting double wall that covers the main body with a fly, it boasts an ultra-lightweight ratio of less than 800g, even when the main body, fly and pole are combined. Not only is it lightweight, but due to various ingenuity, the functions necessary for the tent are maintained high, such as livability and weather resistance. The 2019 model has been updated with a few original NEMO ideas, improving comfort and livability, and achieving a higher balance between weight and the performance of the tent itself.

Detailed review

The parts are the main body, fly poles, and pegs. The storage is divided into three .

Storage can be divided into three parts: the main body, fly, pole, and peg.

The storage bag for the main body and fly is doubled, and if you stretch it, it can store the poles together, allowing you to store everything in one place. It's convenient to store it like this when there is plenty of packing capacity.

The main body and fly storage bag can be stretchable, and poles can also be stored.

only one piece has a
Y when unfolded The two crotch sides are black and the other side is yellow. This color code works with the color of the pole connection part of the tent itself, allowing you to set it up intuitively without making a mistake when setting it up.

There's one pole. It is color coded yellow and black, making it very convenient when setting up.

Some of the black poles are slightly curved rather than straight. Thanks to its curved state, the main unit can be lifted up without applying tension, which helps improve durability and expand the interior.

Some of the poles are curved, contributing to expanding indoor sections and improving durability.

Six aluminum pegs are included. The minimum number of items required is the number of items included for the six items. Guidelines are also included for setting up in strong winds, but extra pegs are required when using these.

Six pegs are included. The strings attached to each peg contribute to ease of unplugging and discovery when you lose sight of them.

The weight is the lowest weight ( 364g 207g fry 211g pole ), and is an actual measured value of 782g , which 800g making it extremely lightweight. Each peg 15g , and the minimum required number 6 pegs is 90g . Each storage bag consists of 27g , 10g , and 8g pegs Even if you combine everything, including the storage bag, it remains extremely lightweight, with a thickness of less than 917g and 1000g.

The simplicity of the setup is almost perfect now

Now we'll set it up in order.

You can stand on your own by matching the color to the pole connection part of the main unit and connecting the pole. It will stand up independently just by connecting the poles, but pegs at the four corners are more stable and you can make the most of your indoor space. In particular, the corners on the single Y-shaped pole are not fixed, so pegs are required.

Connect a Y-shaped pole to the main unit to make it stand on its own. The pole connections on the main body are color-coded, so you can set it up without hesitation.

All you have to do is hang the hook on the main body from the pole and set up the main body.

There are two very distinctive points on the main unit.

The first one is in two corners on one Y-shaped pole. These two places are pulled and secured with two strings, and between the bases of these strings there is a hard rod-shaped part called a corner strut. Thanks to this part, this gray area can be raised vertically, ensuring stable interior space.

On one side, two strings are pulled on, and between them there is a rod-shaped part called a corner strut.

Another one is the propeller-like part attached to the pole. This part, called a flybar voluminating pole clip, works to stably expand the ceiling space when the fly sheet is over it. According to NEMO, it has been expanded by about 10%. It is true that when you cover it with a fly sheet, it appears to have been expanded, but this part seems to improve the wind circumference of the ceiling.

The flybar voluminizing pole clip expands the ceiling space by about 10%, improving breathability.

All that's left is to cover it with a fly sheet and it's done. The long side of the entrance and the long side on the opposite side are much more stable when fixed with pegs.

Cover with a fly sheet and complete it

One side is fitted with one touch to secure the fly sheet and the main body, as shown in the photo. The other side is very easy as you simply hook the string onto the peg that holds the body in place to apply tension.

Simple and lean living space

The fly can be turned out largely on the left half of the fly, and on the entrance side. The main body is made of 10D nylon, which is hardly breathable, so there is almost no breathability in this condition. The entrance is very wide, almost half the size of the long side.

Only one entrance can be opened and closed.

This large entrance is double-layered and can be made into mesh. If you open it fully, you can remove the vent quite wide. However, the only vent is the mesh part at this entrance.

Most of the entrances can be made of mesh.

The room is spacious and is 2.0 m2 (221cm x 79/108cm), which is spacious enough for a solo tent. The ceiling is almost 100cm so it doesn't feel like it's too narrow. The long side is 221cm, so there is still room even when you lay a regular size mat.

The room is spacious enough for one person.

There is a light pocket on the ceiling. When the headlights are turned on, the opaque fabric allows the light to diffuse and illuminate the entire room.

There is a light pocket on the ceiling.

There is a mesh pocket of just the right size next to the entrance. It also has stretching properties, so you can store even small bulky items.

There is a mesh pocket next to the entrance.

The vestibule is also spacious enough for solo use (0.7 m2), making it a great space for placing wet items, shoes, or cooking. However, since the fly is high, it seems like it will bounce and rain will enter when it rains.

The space in the vestibule is large enough for easy cooking and lots of shoes.

Impressions of actually using it

A high balance of weight and residential comfort as a solo tent

Despite having only one pole, the room is very spacious and tall, making it a great solo tent. This is also made up of various ingenuity, such as a propeller-shaped flybar volumizing pole clip and a corner strut that stands upright at the corner of the main body. With this much living space, you can be very comfortable.

Looking out from inside, you can see that the large entrance gives you a sense of openness. It's so open that you wouldn't expect to be inside a solo tent.

The entrance is large, so it feels quite open.

Thanks to this large entrance and vent, the ventilation is very good and you won't get stuffy normally. If you close the fly, it will likely seal and keep air flowing away, but the fly on one side of the short side is slightly shorter, and even when all the fly is closed, it can attract wind. There is no system for direct ventilation with the outside, so ventilation is excellent! That's not to be said, but it can ensure the minimum necessary ventilation even in rainy or strong winds.

The fries on this side are slightly shorter, so they can attract wind.

However, if you close the fly and close the mesh at the entrance, the body is breathable nylon so no wind will come in. In fact, strong winds were blowing frequently during the test, but there was no sense of cold air from the outside. Depending on the condition of the tent, it is both breathable and windproof.

There was no rain during the test, but since the fly was short, the main unit would likely be easily wet due to the bouncing rain during rainfall. The main unit is not waterproof (only the bottoms are waterproof), so you may be worried if you encounter unexpected heavy rain.

Speaking of strong winds, this time we set up the building using only six pegs and did not use the guidelines. However, although I was sometimes stoked by strong winds and woke up by the sound, the tent was very stable and I was not worried.

The main body and fly are made of 10D nylon fabric, which contributes to the weight reduction. Of course, it's 10D, so there are some aspects to it being a bit more durable, but since it's a lightweight tent that weighs under 800g, it's hard to sacrifice to a certain extent.

However, I think it would have been better to have a slightly thicker fabric on the bottom. The bottoms are made of waterproof 15D nylon, but it's still not enough. If I set it up directly on the ground, it would have been fine in grasslands like this one, but in some places it may be quite a bit of a concern. It's especially good to be concerned about threads with stones and other things. A dedicated footprint is also available as an option, so it's a good idea to consider it.

Blue is rare in nature, so the blue string on the pegs can be a surprising mark when you lose sight of them. Even when driven into hard ground, pulling the string makes it easier to remove.

The blue string attached to the pegs is easy to spot when you lose sight of them, and also helps you remove them when you remove them.

As expected, the thin fabric makes storage very easy. The storage bags and fly in particular are treated with silicone so you can easily slip and do whatever you want without folding them neatly. However, the rod-shaped parts and corner struts that expand the living space of the main unit are somewhat tricky. It's quite hard, so when I tried to roll it up and store it, this guy got in the way and couldn't roll it up properly. When storing the main unit, it is better to keep this guy's presence in mind to help you get rid of it without any stress.

Summary: Recommended for people like this

NEMO is a leading tent manufacturer that releases models that reflect new ideas every year. Although the Hornet Storm is the lightest model, it continues to evolve in a way that does not sacrifice other important functionality such as livability, rather than simply pushing towards weight reduction. Despite being ultra-lightweight, weighing less than 800g, this mountain tent has a large living space, and is highly weather resistant and breathable. The fabric itself is generally not durable, so it may be difficult to use as a full-scale mountain tent where there is a lot of snow, but it will be useful as an all-purpose, all-purpose solo tent that can be used in a variety of fields throughout the year.

However, since it is an ultra-light tent, there are some areas where durability and strength are inferior. If you take that into consideration, you will be a perfect companion for UL hikers and fast packers.
