Rodeo Valley Loop & Slacker Hill: An easily accessible and exhilarating trail offering panoramic views of San Francisco [Can I die without walking?! A trip to American national parks (47)]
San Francisco, surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, has many hiking spots where you can enjoy beautiful ocean views
And because there are many hills, there are plenty of trails where you can enjoy both the sea and the hills at the same time while walking. Especially from winter to spring, there is often a lot of rain, so the surrounding hills and small mountains are full of moisture, the greenery grows lush, and in spring wildflowers and wild plants bloom everywhere
This time, I'll introduce a hiking trail that's easily accessible from San Francisco, offering views of the ocean, hills, and the Golden Gate Bridge. If you're in SF, I recommend taking a quick walk on the trail as a form of exercise

- hat

Trail Data
For beginners and intermediate players
- Round trip distance: Approximately 9.8 km
- Elevation difference: Approximately 338 meters
- Duration: Approximately 2 to 3 hours
- Season: This trail is open all year round, and you can enjoy beautiful scenery no matter what season you visit. (The flowers are in bloom from roughly February to May.)
This trail is located on the side of the Golden Gate Bridge you cross from the SF side, so it's recommended to stop at Vista Point: RGM9+4V, Sausalito, CA 94965 on your way there to enjoy the view of the Golden Gate Bridge while also taking a restroom break
Characteristics of flowers in each season
February
- It's still raining a lot, and it's the beginning of the budding season
- Early spring wildflowers (buttercups, scutellaria, woodland flowers) are beginning to bloom little by little
March to April (peak season)
- The time of year when the colors are most vibrant
- Lupins, California poppies, blue-eyed grass, irises, and other flowers are in full bloom
May
- Many flowers can still be seen, but in some areas and weather conditions, drought is beginning, and the peak blooming season may have already passed
- Some varieties bloom later in high-altitude areas and along the coast
After June
- As rain decreases and the weather becomes drier, most plants begin to wither
- Some plants retain their color like dried flowers, but green meadows and flower fields become less common

Trailhead
Parking: Departure at 10:00 AM. The parking lot is small, but there were still spots available. Restrooms are also located here.

Leave the parking lot and start hiking
At this time of year, thanks to the rain that fell during the winter, the surrounding land is saturated with water, making the greenery vibrant and incredibly beautiful
California has two seasons throughout the year: the rainy season from December to March, and the dry season from April until winter, when it hardly rains at all. Therefore, during the dry spring and summer months, the plants gradually wither and turn golden. This is actually the only time of year when you can see such a beautiful green landscape. (Photo taken in late April)

This area is very popular for birdwatching, hiking, and horseback riding. While you should be careful of horse manure and other debris on the trails, it's a trail that anyone can easily enjoy
It starts with a gently winding downhill slope. It's a loop, so you can start in either direction, but I went around clockwise

The green and black circles mark the trailhead starting point
As soon as you start walking, you'll be greeted by a multitude of wildflowers

The California poppy, which is also the state flower of California, can be seen everywhere from spring to early summer

California Dandelion

Lupines are a representative spring wildflower of the western United States
With the ocean visible in the distance, the fresh sea breeze and the pleasant sounds of birdsong seem to go on forever, making it a truly wonderful place. It's the perfect place to feel like you're in California!

The colorful flowers that appear one after another are irresistible for flower lovers. (I haven't included all of them in the photos, but there were many more flowers in full bloom.)
And butterflies also came to greet us

This is a Pipevine Swallowtail. It is widely distributed from the west to the south and is a common species in California
Then we descend further, reaching the bottom of the valley. About 20 minutes after we started, a flat area opens up

Further along the trail you will come to a public road. To continue on the trail that continues in the direction the road is going, cross the road and turn left
A panel will appear on your right; follow the trail beyond that panel. (Towards Rodeo Valley Trail)

The road remains flat

There's another panel after that, and the slope gradually begins from here

San Francisco enjoys a cool climate even in summer due to the cold ocean currents flowing in from the Pacific Ocean (part of the California Current/Alaska Gyre) and the resulting sea breezes caused by the temperature difference between the inland and the ocean. Particularly famous are the sea fogs that frequently occur in summer, sometimes obscuring the Golden Gate Bridge from view
Therefore, in San Francisco, there are many days when it feels chilly even in summer and you need a jacket, and tourists are often surprised by the cold. It is also famous for being a comfortable and pleasant place to live for Americans, who tend to get hot easily
A famous quote that often describes the climate of San Francisco is a joke by Mark Twain:
The coldest winter I ever
experienced was a summer in San Francisco."
This phrase is well-known

It was cloudy at first, then sunny, but it wasn't too hot or too cold, making for a very pleasant day
Once you reach the top of the slope and a panel appears, turn right (towards Slacker Trail)

You can even see the top of the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance

Towards the end of the journey, a breathtaking view awaits you, encompassing the city of San Francisco, San Francisco Bay, and even the Golden Gate Bridge

Cavallo Point Overlook (Map 1)

If you have even more energy, try climbing a little further up the hill to Slacker Hill, where you can get a beautiful view of the Golden Gate Bridge

After that, you return to the trail you came from, and the final stretch is downhill
We arrived at the trailhead parking lot a little after 12:00, two hours later

This San Francisco hiking trail is neither too long nor too short, offers great scenery, and is a very nice and easily accessible trail
If you have some free time while you're here, I recommend spending your time exploring San Francisco on foot like this

Leave your hiking and travel plans for California, including Yosemite National Park, to us. Influenced by my father, I've always loved outdoor activities, and while living in Japan, I started hiking and touring national parks, becoming fascinated by the natural beauty of America and Canada, which ultimately led me to my dream of visiting the United States. Currently, I run ANAMI TOURS, which offers local optional tours created together with clients, such as completely private hiking tours with Japanese guides. I'll introduce you to special options that I know only because I live in the area. If you're interested, please visit the website below
