Talk Event Announcement: Ask Legendary Climbers at the Dawn of Yosemite and Free Climbing Culture

Mike Graham of the legendary climber group THE STONE MASTERS is coming to Japan!

In the 1950s, everyone wanted a safe and comfortable life in the "terrifyingly boring" America.

The waves of beat generation and counterculture appeared in the city's life that had no adventurous spirit. Young people, fascinated by the ideas of Jacques Kerouac, escape the city and end up in Yosemite, California, rebelling against common sense and gravity. The huge granite, polished by the glacier, quickly captivated them.

The history of rock climbing in Yosemite, which began in the 1970s, eventually created a new climbing culture called "free climbing," and Yosemite has today become a world-renowned name as one of the holy places for rock climbing.

Now, Mike Graham, a member of the legendary climber group THE STONE MASTERS, who has made the first ascent of many routes in Yosemite in the 1970s, the dawn of free climbing, is visiting Japan. A slide and talk event will be held on September 21st at the Tokyo outdoor select shop "Outdoor, Relax by Masudakohboh." This is a unique opportunity to learn through precious photographs and voices the moment when counterculture and outdoor culture intersect with his 1970s, including climbing scenes with his friends who had developed routes one after another since his childhood.

This time, thanks to various opportunities for such a fun event, Outdoor Gearzine has decided to coordinate and host this event! On the day, we will also have some free drinks and other items available after the slides and talk show, so feel free to stop by after work!

After working in Yosemite, Mike Graham launched climbing wear brand Gramicci. However, he was not satisfied with this and sold the brand. ROKX was founded in 2000 with the aim of creating products that are satisfying as an outdoor enthusiast. This time, it also has the meaning of this promotional event.
