macpac Weka 40 & Fjord 40 Review Simple, tough, utility backpacks are made of integrity to nature
It was the first time in about 20 years that I had the chance to wear a macpac backpack. One was the Weka 40 the Fjord 40, which is lightweight and versatile, fully demonstrating the spirit of the adventure racing powerhouse .
The two backpacks are so completely different that they could be described as "hard and soft," but what runs through both of them is a common philosophy that was born only when confronted with the harsh yet bountiful nature of New Zealand. This philosophy is subtly different from that of Europe, the United States, and Japan, allowing us to fully appreciate the depth of diversity in outdoor culture. In this article, we will look at the philosophy that runs through macpac's manufacturing and review two backpacks that embody it

The philosophy that runs through macpac, or my encounter with macpac
I just wanted a sturdy backpack
There was a time in the past when I just wanted a durable and waterproof backpack. It was in the late 90s, when I was obsessed with canyoning, and in my first year of university, I bought my first backpack on the advice of a senior student, but I had just said goodbye to the one I had bought and was looking for a new one
At the time, I was what they call a "sawaya" (mountain climber), and I spent all my time climbing mountain streams when there was no snow. It was common for my backpack to get caught in the bushes or on rocky edges, sink into the water, drag up muddy or rocky walls, and sometimes even throw it over a waterfall when I was in a desperate situation. It was a time when I had no brains to even consider that a lighter and thinner backpack would be better
As I was absentmindedly browsing at my usual mountaineering specialty store in Suidobashi, my eye suddenly caught sight of a backpack I had never seen before. It had a cute brand name, a clean, unobtrusive look, and a tasteful blue color
Something about its unique features drew me in, and when I asked for more details, I was surprised to learn that it was a backpack made of completely waterproof fabric (although I later found out it was water-resistant, not waterproof). And when I touched it, I immediately knew it was made of a durable fabric, like canvas. This was exactly what I was looking for. A few days later, the backpack was in my house. That was how I first encountered the macpac, which I will introduce today
That was supposed to be the start of my long relationship with the Macpac. However, sadly, the model at the time was made to fit Western builds, so the shoulder straps didn't fit my shoulders properly, and they would chafe my shoulders if I carried it all day. So, I couldn't continue using it for long. It was a bittersweet memory, especially since I really liked the bag
Utility born from the strength and simplicity of New Zealand nature
macpac was born and raised in New Zealand in 1973. Many people know that New Zealand is a country rich in nature, with mountains over 3,000 meters high, glaciers, vast virgin forests, streams, marshes, lakes, and fjords. The magnificent scenery created by this diverse natural environment continues to fascinate people from all over the world
However, the complex natural environment and the weather, which is so complicated that there are four seasons in one day, do not accept us so easily. In order to venture deep into the New Zealand wilderness, we need to be able to adapt to all kinds of conditions, including weather, seasons, and terrain
The conclusion they arrived at after continuing to confront the harsh and diverse New Zealand nature, which is different from both continents Europe and America, was the concept of "simple and tough." "Simplicity trumps complexity," the answer they established through 40 years of craftsmanship, exudes the brand's respect and sincerity toward nature. And the fact that this simple concept, even if it seems like a detour, ultimately satisfies the spirit of adventure around the world is proven by the fact that it has connected with people like me who used to enjoy canyoning in Japan
Durability also means long-lasting use, which inevitably leads to resource conservation. The design seems to convey that honesty towards nature is ultimately a timeless value that will remain unchanged through the ages
"AZTEC®" is a unique material that embodies simplicity and toughness
The material that best embodies macpac's philosophy is "AZTEC®," which was developed as a result of their pursuit of higher quality packs in accordance with their concept. A blend of abrasion-resistant cotton and corrosion-resistant polyester is woven together at high density on a special loom, and then impregnated with a waterproof liquid, resulting in a unique, strong fabric that is "durable, water-resistant, and long-lasting."
Regular nylon backpacks have a PU coating on the lining to make them more water-resistant, but many people have experienced this coating begin to wear off after about three years. On the other hand, backpacks made with AZTEC® are durable and their water-resistant properties do not deteriorate over time, making them a long-lasting companion
Detailed Review: Weka 40
I will review macpac's signature medium-sized backpack, the Weka 40
Fabric, material, and appearance
The base fabric is ECO AZTEC®, which is lighter and softer than the AZTEC® material lineup mentioned above. AZTEC® tends to be heavy, but this model has been designed to reduce weight in other small areas, and while maintaining the traditional characteristics of durability and water resistance, it also meets modern lightweight needs. As a result, the weight is not as noticeable as with traditional macpac packs
Let's pour water on the AZTEC® fabric. It has a high level of water repellency, so that light rain will just run off in an instant. Even if water soaks into the fabric due to heavy rain, the cotton expands, making the fabric denser and sealing the stitching holes, further preventing water from penetrating inside (see photo below)
In addition to its functional features, I personally love the soft and tasteful texture of this cotton blend. This fabric has a mysterious charm that makes even the most vibrant colors look subdued
External attachments such as pockets and straps are kept to a minimum, and the clean surface is achieved by minimizing seams and reducing switching, giving it a unique and sophisticated appearance that makes you want to own one just like it
Back system and carrying comfort
The hard back fits snugly against your back, and the waist harness has straps on both sides to pull the pack in, ensuring the weight is firmly placed on your hips
However, the back padding is minimal in the areas where the weight is applied, and the cushioning on the back and waist harness is a little less and a little hard. This was the case in the past, but compared to modern luxury packs, it feels a little bulky. It's fine for a normal weekend hike, but you need to be prepared for long walks with a load of over 10kg
Storage (pockets/attachments)
The biggest feature of the Weka's storage is the large stash pocket with zipper pocket on the front. What's unique about this pocket is that it is connected to the stretch mesh pocket on the side. This means that in addition to the usual uses (see photo below) on both the side and front,
It is possible to put large items or multiple small items in it (see photo below. Is it hard to understand?). You can just throw things in as needed without thinking. It is simple in design, but surprisingly practical
The main compartment can be opened with just one finger for easy use (see photo below)
The canopy has a head pocket and a zipper pocket with a keychain on the back (see photo below)
There is one pole attachment on the left side, but it can hold two poles (see photo below). There are also plenty of storage and attachment points for hydration packs
I'm curious about this
While maintaining the "tough and simple" qualities that have been present up until now, the intention to add a modern, light and smart feel to many aspects is apparent, but it seems that the balance between these two is successful in some areas and not in others
For example, the waist harness. The strap width and the buckle itself were too small, making it feel a little lacking in stability and operability. Personally, I would have preferred it to be larger and more stable without cutting back on these parts
Additionally, the two front buckles that connect the canopy to the body get stuck inside the stash pocket every time you open or close the bag, which can be quite frustrating. There is still room for improvement in these small details
Summary: Recommended for people like this
The construction itself is simple and tough, a hallmark of macpac, making it a highly versatile model suitable for mountain trips of all seasons. Additionally, the weight, a drawback of macpac, isn't a concern, so as long as you don't mind the stiffness when you put it on your back, both veterans and beginners will be pleased. This model has all the essential features you need in a backpack, and if you're attracted by its unique appearance, it's definitely worth considering

Detailed Review: Fjord 40
is the Fjord 40 , a lightweight, versatile backpack that shows another side of macpac recently, created as a result of the brand's efforts to face the harsh natural environment as a brand from a major adventure racing country.
Fabric, material, and appearance
The body is made of 100 denier nylon for maximum lightness, while the bottom is made of 500 denier Cordura nylon for durability. The form is slim and versatile, with a simple cylindrical shape
Back system and carrying comfort
The back panel, made of a wavy urethane foam panel combined with mesh material, is breathable and cushioned, and together with the shoulder and waist areas, it is designed to prevent stuffiness (see photo below). It is comfortable even during active activities or in hot and humid weather
As this model focuses on lightweight design, it does not include a back frame, so the backpack is quite soft when empty
However, when you think of a typical lightweight backpack, you might think that you have to give up stability, but this handicap is supported by four firm urethane foam rods that run vertically from front to back and left to right across the body, as well as a urethane foam panel on the back, and the wide waist harness and straps on both sides provide ample stability and comfort
By the way, this urethane foam pad can also be used as a mat when sleeping, and can be removed if you need to make it even lighter (see photo below)
The waist harness is also removable to reduce weight (see photo below)
The canopy can be removed to reduce weight or when carrying less luggage (see photo below). Comfort, stability, storage capacity, and lightness can be freely adjusted to suit your needs. It's impressive how the design remains simple despite incorporating so many complex elements
Storage (pockets/attachments)
The main compartment is a roll-top design to prevent water from seeping in. Inside, there is a foam padded inner bag with a hook for storing hydration (see photo below)
The zipper pocket on the canopy has a mesh zipper pocket with a keychain on the back that is large enough (see photo below)
Zipper pockets for storing small items are located on both sides of the waist harness (see photo below)
In addition to a large stretch pocket on the front, there is also a bungee cord that can be used freely (photo below)
It also has elastic pockets on the sides, as well as side compression straps that can be used to secure long items or compress the bag to fit the amount of luggage (see photo below)
These side compression straps are called "ZigZag Side Compression" and are not only extremely lightweight thanks to the round cord, but also very smart, as they can be tightened with one action while wearing the pack (see photo below)
The chest strap has an attachment for securing a hydration tube (see photo below)
The straps that secure the poles are on both sides (see photo below). They are linked to the side straps, making it a clever design that is both lightweight and easy to use
I'm curious about this
The same issue can be raised with the Weka 40, but the two front buckles connecting the canopy to the body are always hidden when opening and closing, which is frustrating. Also, when there isn't much luggage, these straps get in the way of the front flap, making it difficult to close
Summary: Recommended for people like this
The Fjord 40 is lightweight enough for racing, yet equipped with all the basic storage and attachment options, and boasts a comfortable fit and feel that's hard to find in a lightweight pack. It's perfect for fastpacking and other light activities, as well as general hiking. Unlike the Weka, it's tailored to modern needs, while also boasting the versatility to be used in almost any outdoor environment on the planet, a sleek model that embodies the macpac spirit in another sense.
