R1 is a regulator fleece regulator that has been extremely popular with all outdoor enthusiasts, including climbers, hikers, and snow sports, one of Patagonia . Of these, the original R1 jacket , which has the longest history since its creation, has undergone a long-awaited full renewal this season.

Teravia Pack , a backpack that is transformed to accommodate day trips and tents as a full-scale hiking backpack . Teravia Pants also be completely revamped (reviews will be scheduled for later), and there will be plenty of updates to items that climbers and hikers should not miss. We are having a really exciting start to the season.

So this time, I was able to try out the " Men's R1 Jacket Teravia Pack 36L which has many features suitable for hiking, including lightness, breathability, comfortable carrying, and smart storage, on an actual day hike, so I'd like to review my impressions right away.

R1 Jacket: Main Features

The R1 jacket is a technical fleece that was born as a "light, non-smooth, non-bulk" regulator. The body part, shoulders and elbows are made of lightweight Polartech Power Grid material, and the hybrid structure combines base layer caprain thermal weight material from both sides to cuffs to achieve maximum comfort with minimal weight. The elastic fabric is easy to move around, and the center front zipper garage at the chin position reduces the discomfort of the zipper. The chest pockets made of mesh inside and the left and right hand pockets are open to provide ventilation, while the stitching of the shoulders reduces the discomfort when carrying a backpack. While leaving plenty of room to wear the base layer, the slim design doesn't get in the way of layering and is a mid-layer fleece that can be worn for a variety of activities.

R1 Jacket: Detailed Review

Excellent balance of breathability and heat retention

The R1 jacket is an all-around model in the R1 series lineup. Polartech Power Grid is placed around the torso and shoulders to keep the core of the body moderately warm, and from the armpits to the stomach and cuffs the fabric used in the Capleen Thermal Weight series, creating a hybrid structure that improves breathability.

Polartech power grids are placed from the body to the elbow, where you want to emphasize heat retention, and Caprene thermal weight fabrics are placed from the sides to the cuffs, where you want to emphasize ventilation.

In field tests, even in scenes where you sweat due to long periods of action, there was no overheating. The grid-structured grooves promote ventilation while the armpits, which tend to collect sweat, make the thinner fabric more breathable, making it possible to continue wearing it without feeling uncomfortable.

The thin fabric makes it breathable, but the durability is a bit of a concern. Since the fabric is thin, I'm worried that it will damage the wear and tear due to rubbing.

Caprene thermal weight fabric is thin enough to be visible while maintaining heat retention.

Opening pockets promotes ventilation with ventilation effect

Both the pockets on the chest and abdomen are mesh inside, and when opened, they provide ventilation, allowing for more efficient ventilation and heat dissipation. The R1 jacket already highly breathable , but this ventilation effect is extremely effective in situations where there is more energy.

By opening it, you won't be able to put things in your pocket, but the effect you get was great. During the test, I was able to experience it for just under 5 hours in an environment with a temperature of 0 to 5°C, but I was able to continue wearing it until the very end without feeling any discomfort due to stuffiness.

Opening the pocket gives it a ventilation effect. There are two hand warmer pockets in one chest pocket

Before you know it, it's dry and has excellent ventilation and quick drying properties

The R1 jacket is sweaty and dries quickly. While you are still in the mood, you will sweat mainly on the back where you carry a backpack, but with fabrics that are not sweat-absorbent, the sweat accumulates and it is difficult to dry out. In this regard the R1 jacket is made of fabric that is excellent for quick drying, and it seems to instantly drip from the grooves of the grid structure, and the sweat that was spilling out naturally into the fabric as shown in the photo below, and before I knew it, it dries smoothly and quickly.

When I took a break, I found sweat stains when I removed my backpack, but it dried in no time.

The grid-structured lining made me sweat well, so I didn't feel like I was getting back into the sweat, and I didn't feel like it was sticky and stuck, so it was extremely comfortable.

Due to its thin, lightweight and highly breathable design, it is not necessary to expect excessive heat retention and wind resistance.

certainly an all-around R1 jacket , but as a mid-layer, it is a thin, active fleece with an emphasis on breathability, so you need to be careful not to expect heat retention from this jacket when hiking in mountain hiking under harsh environments such as snowy mountains. Because the wind passes through well, the body gets cold in windy places such as ridges, so I felt that wind-resistant clothing is easier to use in situations where activities are very active and when there are long activities in strong wind zones, wind-resistant clothing is easier to use.

However, in this case, layering with a shell jacket allows you to work comfortably in a more diverse environment, so on the other hand, it can be said that it is highly versatile.

Exceptional comfort with elasticity that does not interfere with movement

The R1 jacket designed to fit perfectly on your body , but it has a slim fit and does not get in the way of layering, yet has a high elasticity, making it difficult to notice when you lift your arms or stretch your body out at all. It feels like you're wearing a base layer.

It fits perfectly to your body, but does not interfere with movement at all. The elasticity and supple fabric were comfortable to wear.

The fully zipper makes it easy to put on and take off, and there is a zipper garage on the chin so you don't have to worry about the zipper. While clothing with a high fit around the neck keeps you warm, I sometimes feel a bit uncomfortable with it, as I feel a bit uncomfortable with it. the R1 jacket was not too tight, and it wasn't loose, but was exquisite.

Summary: An unmatched all-around regulator, from heat retention, breathability, quick drying, comfortable to wear and lightness.

There are many performances required for mid-layers, making it difficult to find the best layering.

It is comfortable to wear and has a good balance of heat retention and breathability, prevents overheating during activities, and quickly dries if it gets wet due to sweating. the R1 jacket which has been made even lighter, was a wear that I can confidently recommend as a mid-layer fleece from early spring to early autumn.

Teravia Pack 36L: Detailed Review

Breathable mesh back panel, shoulder straps and hip belt

When climbing or hiking, where you carry food, clothing, and shelter, you cannot prevent sweating due to long periods of activity, and you cannot eliminate discomfort caused by heat or stuffiness. In particular, the back and shoulders that come into contact with the ground when carrying a backpack are more prone to getting wet and stuffy, making it easy to feel uncomfortable. Hikers have to think about how to deal with sweat.

To avoid feeling uncomfortable due to wet, you should choose highly breathable items, and tools designed to reduce discomfort caused by stuffiness. The Teravia Pack 36L is designed to reduce stuffiness, and the shoulder strap is made of air mesh fabric that is breathable and quick-drying, and the cushioning material is made of hollow pads, which greatly improves breathability. Even in scenes where I sweat over long periods of time, the stuffiness was kept to a minimum and there was little discomfort.

The double effect of mesh fabric and hollowed pads provides excellent breathability

The back pads and hip belts are also made of air mesh, and the pads with holes on the grid make it more breathable. The back part that comes into contact with the body may cause some sweating, but I realized that it has higher ventilation performance than the backpack I have carried on my back.

Comfortable fit, plenty of cushioning, and built-in frame for comfortable carrying

The hollowed-out pads not only provide breathability, but also provide comfort to carry. By distributing the load on the hip belt, which is designed to wrap around the waist, the burden on the shoulders is reduced, and the entire body can be carried on your back, making it less likely to feel fatigue even after long periods of movement. The Teravia Pack 36L has a built-in spring steel in the foam back panel, allowing for even weight balance when packed, which allows for stable carrying.

The Teravia Pack 36L has a built-in frame for increased stability, and is a lightweight backpack of 1,066g, with a capacity of 36L. In the current market, backpacks made with the concept of UL (ultra light) are also available in a lineup of models that cost less than 500g, and if you compare the weight with those backpacks, the Teravia Pack 36L is not that light, but it is premature to simply compare them based on the weight.

Light equipment is better, but lightness is not the only thing you need in a backpack. In order to carry the on-the-job and shelter and make it possible to carry long periods of time, it is more important to carry comfort and load distribution and stability than lightness. Considering the ease of carrying and load distribution required of a backpack, the Teravia Pack 36L can be said to be a lightweight backpack with the necessary performance.

Lightweight for UL-oriented hikers

One thing that bothers me is that it does not have a load lifter despite its increased durability and stability. In order to carry the burden, you can attract the backpack to your body to make it more stable, so I thought I would also like a road lifter because it has an internal frame and provides greater stability.

The shoulder straps and waist pads are not that thick, and there is no road lifter to attract the backpack to your body, so I felt that it was not a backpack that is resistant to heavy loads, but that the equipment is as light as possible and the pack weight can be kept to just over 10kg.

A variety of storage spaces that combine ease of use and storage

The roll top closure allows for scalability and side compression to allow for stress-free use from day trips to staying in a tent

The Teravia Pack 36L which uses a roll-top closure, has a long streamer, making it highly expandable and can be used even when food is high or when replenishing. Furthermore, the top belt has a longer belt so that it can be used to attach large items such as sleeping mats.

Not only that, by utilizing side compression, you can handle small amounts of luggage, such as day hiking, and you can use just one backpack to accommodate day trips, from day trip climbing to staying in a tent where there is a lot of luggage.

Generally, when you try to use a large backpack that you can use in a tent for day hiking or hiking, it creates extra space, making it easy to move around inside the backpack, making it difficult to use, but the Teravia Pack 36L can be reduced by using solid side compression, so it was stress-free even for day hiking. Of course, the hike lasts for just 1-2 hours, so there is less food and drink, so it is over-spec, but I was able to use it without any problems on mountain hiking, where there is a long time to go.

A more durable front pocket than mesh

The front pocket made of non-stretchable fabric gave the impression that it was difficult to use, but the Teravia Pack 36L pockets have stretch power mesh on both sides, making it even more storage than it looks. Because it is made of durable fabric rather than mesh material, it is durable.

The power mesh sides of the front pocket make it elastic and can accommodate a large number of items

The stretchable area is limited and many items cannot be accommodated

The power mesh on both sides gives you a certain amount of storage capacity, but it is also true that pockets with power mesh on the entire surface have a higher storage capacity. It's nice to use fabric to increase durability, but it's a shame if at least a gusset in the pocket could store a little more.

Pockets in various places that allow you to access while carrying your backpack

The hip belt pocket with power mesh can be fitted with a slightly larger one.

The side pockets are made of highly elastic stretch power mesh, so you can safely put them in without worrying about bottles falling. The hip belt pocket also uses stretch power mesh, so even a slightly larger one can fit in.

The top pocket at the top neck has a key clip, making it convenient for storing valuables and first aid kits that you want to take out quickly. The main compartment has a hydration sleeve that allows the tube to be extended from either the left or right side.

There are pickle holders on the left and right sides on the outside of the backpack, allowing you to attach pickles and trekking poles. It can be quickly stored even in situations where you use both hands and feet to act. The attached rain cover is stored in the bottom pocket, making it suitable for inclement weather.

I wanted a pocket on the shoulder strap

I have no major complaints about the storage capacity, but if I had to say I would have liked the shoulder strap to have pockets. The shoulder area is more accessible while you are on the move. I store drink cell phones in an accessible shoulder strap pocket, which is often carried in a bottle, rather than hydration.

The Teravia Pack 36L allows you to access the side pockets while carrying it on your back , but it was a shame that there were no pockets on the shoulder strap because the shoulder strap pocket is much more accessible.

Summary: A lightweight, comfortable backpack with a variety of tips that will prevent you from feeling stressed through sweaty seasonal behavior.

In my memory, I think that the number of backpacks that Patagonia has made so far is such a lighter hiking backpack. From this backbone, the Teravia Pack 36L on my back was greatly disappointing (in a good way). The air mesh structure and hollow pads provide a comfortable carrying experience, breathable and quick-drying properties, making them more reliable when you are taking action in warm to hot seasons. The lightweight frame structure, which combines high stability that prevents heavy loads from shaking, is not inferior to backpacks of the same type, and is not inferior to those of the same capacity, and even after long periods of action, you can feel the stable high fit. The Teravia Pack 36L is a backpack with excellent functionality and is an environmentally friendly backpack made from recycled materials.

Features are included everywhere to ensure ease of use, and should support hikers who travel mountains such as through hiking and traversing during the green season, which is getting hotter year by year.
