No problem with wind or cold! PRIMUS' new "P157 Integrate Stove" is a high-end single burner that can withstand any bad weather [Hands-on Review]

PRIMUS, a Swedish company with over 130 years of history, has released a new gas stove. The P-157 Integrate Stove, , is a single-burner stove designed for mountaineering that can boil water at a speed similar to that of calm conditions, even in windy conditions that make it difficult to stand.

Anyone who has ever tried to boil water on a snowy mountain has probably experienced the frustration of not getting enough heat and having to wait a very long time to boil the water. For stoves used in the harsh backcountry, it's especially important that they can withstand wind and cold. Having a stove that can be used without problems even in harsh environments is essential

P-157 Integral Stove a new, high-spec model with excellent weather resistance .

This model seems to have specs comparable to the SOTO Windmaster, which has previously achieved top-class performance in Outdoor Gearzine's comparison tests, but what is its true nature? We immediately tried it out in the field

Main features of the PRIMUS P-157 integrated stove

The P-157 Integral Stove is a high-performance single burner that uses a newly designed valve equipped with a regulator mechanism, providing stable high performance and comfortable usability in any environment

The newly designed valve with a regulator mechanism ensures stable gas supply in both warm and cold environments. The cone-shaped burner head creates an inward-tilting flame, efficiently transferring the flame's thermal energy to the cooker, making it highly wind-resistant and ensuring stable combustion in any environment.

The four trivets provide excellent stability even when using large-diameter frying pans or cookware, and by positioning the trivet surface higher than on previous products, the hottest part of the outer edge of the flame can be efficiently directed at the bottom of the pot

It boasts high specs and high stability, yet weighs just 100g, achieving a high level of practicality and portability

Favorite points

  • High heat output that can boil water at an astonishing speed

Detailed Review

I'll let you know that I've tested it multiple times at altitudes of 2,000m to 2,500m and temperatures of 0 to 5 degrees. I've also used it in strong winds where it was barely possible to stand, so I think I can give you a realistic feel for anyone planning to use it in harsh natural environments!

High heat output that can boil water at an astonishing speed

The first thing that surprised me when I used the Integrated Stove was its high heat output

In a preliminary combustion test in a windless environment, it took 75 seconds (1 minute 15 seconds) for 300ml of room temperature water to boil completely! This was a full minute faster than the stove I had used before

The Integrate Stove has an output of 2,840 kcal/h. Another Primus gas stove, the Ultra Burner (P-153), boasts a higher output of 3,600 kcal/h, but it takes 105 seconds to fully boil 300 ml of water. The Integrate Stove, despite having a lower output than the Ultra Burner, fully boils 30 seconds faster

The cone-shaped burner head is designed to converge the flame, achieving high combustion efficiency

This powerful flame is made possible by the "convex" burner head. The burner head is designed to converge inward, preventing the flame from escaping when it hits the bottom of the pot. This ensures that the flame's energy hits the bottom of the cooker without any waste, maximizing combustion efficiency and resulting in an astonishingly powerful flame

High weather resistance that allowed it to be used without problems even in an explosion

The effect of the cone-shaped burner head is not only the strength of the flame, but also the high weather resistance (especially wind) that shows amazing performance

When we went to the field to conduct the combustion test, the forecast called for wind speeds of 10 m/s, but in reality, the wind was so strong that it was difficult to stand. We were sure that we wouldn't be able to boil water in this weather, but when we went ahead and tested it, we were able to fully boil 300 ml of water in 85 seconds. The temperature was around 5°C, and even in the harsh conditions of the wind, the water boiled in just 10 seconds longer than in the preliminary combustion test. We can only take our hats off to this

I think the reason it has such high weather resistance is because of the funnel-shaped burner head and the design that prevents wind from directly hitting the combustion area

According to the official website, the position of the grate is designed to be higher than usual, so it is further away from the flame, which led to concerns that combustion efficiency might decrease in strong winds, but there was no problem at all

Compare heat output and weather resistance with competing products

Compared to its rival, the SOTO Windmaster

We also conducted a comparison test with the SOTO Windburner, which Outdoor Gearzine has previously recommended in the all-around gas stove category. *The following is Outdoor Gearzine's opinion based on our own testing.

We measured the time it took for 300ml of water to boil completely, and in preliminary tests the Integrator took 75 seconds and the Windmaster took 81 seconds, a difference of 6 seconds within the margin of error, but a difference became apparent in outdoor tests

In a similar test at an altitude of approximately 2,500 meters, with a temperature of approximately 0°C and a perceived wind speed of 3-5 m/s, the Integrate Stove took 84 seconds to heat up, while the Windmaster took 110 seconds. The Integrate Stove was 26 seconds faster

Just to be clear, the Windmaster's time of 110 seconds is not slow at all. I was honestly surprised that the Integrator could beat that time

A new valve that maintains stable heat even during continuous use

When using a gas burner, one thing to be concerned about is the "drop-down phenomenon," which is a decrease in flame power due to continuous use

I think everyone has experienced this: when a gas stove is used continuously, the gas cartridge itself cools down due to heat generated by the air, making it difficult for the fuel inside the cartridge to vaporize, resulting in a decrease in flame output

For this reason, each manufacturer has a lineup of "cold weather" cartridges, but unfortunately, even cold weather cartridges will experience some decrease in firepower with continuous use

The decrease in firepower is more likely in low temperature environments, and the decrease in firepower is particularly noticeable during continuous use in environments such as the snowy period in severe winter

So what about integrated stoves?

We tested the boiler at an altitude of 2,500m, with a temperature of 0°C and a wind speed of 3-5m/s, to see what change would occur in the time it took to boil 300ml of water three times in a row.The first time it took 84 seconds, the second time 85 seconds, and the third time 90 seconds

The time it takes to boil increases each time, but the difference between the first and third times is only 6 seconds, which is within the margin of error. I was able to experience for myself that the Integrate Stove is a stove that can burn without losing efficiency even when used continuously

A newly designed valve equipped with a regulator mechanism ensures a stable gas supply. This is the result of the fusion of PRIMUS, a leading Swedish manufacturer of gas combustion appliances for over 130 years, and the regulator technology cultivated by its Japanese partner, Iwatani

When the internal gas pressure is high, such as in warm environments, the inflow of gas is suppressed, and when the internal gas pressure drops, such as in cold weather, a sufficient gas flow path is ensured, preventing a decrease in output

In exchange for stable high firepower, it is somewhat less lightweight and compact

If you plan to use the stove all year round in the harsh natural environments of mountainous regions, we can confidently recommend the Integrate Stove as a reliable gas stove in terms of its heat output and weather resistance

However, when compared to other gas stoves, what stands out is its size and weight

The funnel-shaped burner head, designed with combustion efficiency and weather resistance in mind, is larger than the burner heads of other stoves and requires larger storage space

Primus gas stove size comparison

In fact, the small cooker I normally use can store the Femto Stove along with the cartridge, but the Integrate Stove cannot be stored snugly

The Integrate Stove weighs 100g (actual measurement is 100.2g), which is not lightweight compared to other gas stoves

If weight is a priority, the SOTO Windmaster weighs just 67g (burner + three grates), and although the Integral Stove has better combustion efficiency, the Windmaster wins in terms of weight

Furthermore, the Wind Master offers the option of a lightweight three-piece grate or a more stable four-piece grate, making it not only lightweight but also highly versatile

Storage size and weight are a trade-off between performance and stove performance, so the best stove will depend on the user's priorities and the environment in which it will be used

The size of the grate provides high stability, but there are also unexpected pitfalls

The Integrated Stove's trivets are 14.8cm wide when extended. The four trivets provide excellent stability, but they're also large enough to accommodate larger cookware and frying pans

It is designed to be stable enough to be used not only as a solo cooker, but also as a larger cooker for two people

The grate is quite large when unfolded, but one thing that bothered me was that it couldn't accommodate smaller cookers when unfolded

When the grates are unfolded, there is a gap of about 9cm between them, so a cooker with a diameter of about 12cm can be used without much trouble, but a cooker with a diameter of about 10cm can only be placed while checking the centre from directly above (making it difficult to use in the field)

It is difficult to place a cup of about 10 cm with the trivet extended

When the grate is folded, it can accommodate cooktops with a small diameter, but other Primus stoves, such as the Femto Stove, have slits in the grate so that they can be used even when folded, but the Integrate Stove does not have any slits

On the left is the Femto Stove, which has a slit even when folded, making the cooktop less likely to slip. On the right is the Integrate Stove, which can be used in the folded state but does not have a slit

It seems that the product was not designed to be used with smaller cooktops, and although it can be used in a folded state, I was concerned that there were no slits. If you are using a smaller cooktop alone, make sure that it is folded flat before using it

Summary: If you want to cover all seasons with one stove, the Integrate Stove is the best solution!
