When it comes to the most effective clothing for keeping out the cold outdoors, there is no garment that beats the down jacket, both now and in the past. Filled with waterfowl feathers that have excellent insulating properties (heat retention) per weight, down jackets are incredibly light, portable, and warm, providing great peace of mind as cold weather clothing, making them a hugely popular outerwear fashion item in the city during the fall and winter

Even down jackets that are popular in town are not necessarily good for outdoor activities like mountain climbing. In harsh environments like winter mountain climbing, although it depends on the purpose, many functionalities that are separate from design are required, such as being as light, warm, and durable as possible

This season's new " DUVET" series of down jackets from Italian high-performance outdoor brand MONTURA is designed to offer the ultimate in functionality to meet the complex and sophisticated demands of outdoor activities. We tested three unique models in the Yatsugatake Mountains, where the first snow had just fallen: the " HELIOS DUVET JACKET" and "HELIOS DUVET VEST, SKILL DUVET, which is also lightweight but offers superior warmth for colder temperatures . We'd like to review each model's features, recommended seasons, and usage.

High five for its amazing lightness, which makes it easy to carry from serious mountain climbing to short trips

HELIOS DUVET puts the lightness, the greatest appeal of down jackets, front and center . When we measured it ourselves, the jacket weighed just 255 grams in a men's medium size. The vest weighed an astonishing 177 grams.

The jacket weighs less than 300 grams, so it's not a big deal even if it becomes part of your luggage

Of course, this lightness isn't achieved by simply reducing the amount of stuffing and calling it a day; it's the result of careful consideration and careful thought, such as using ultra-lightweight (21 g/sqm) micro ripstop nylon, which is as thin as possible for an outer layer, storing the high-quality down in a baffle structure with as few stitching as possible, and using lightweight, compact pocket zippers. Based on feedback from the field, this jacket's true value lies in its extreme lightness, while maintaining the delicate balance required for a tool to face the harsh elements

Lightweight yet warm and ideal fit

Although it has a slim silhouette that fits the body well, the clever three-dimensional cutting ensures that you don't feel restricted in any way

To achieve sufficient warmth without feeling its light weight, first and foremost, it is essential to use high-quality down. This model is filled with 750FP pure white duck down, which has high resilience, providing excellent loft and insulating power per weight. Furthermore, the NIKWAX water-repellent finish makes it resistant to moisture and maintains high heat retention even in humid conditions

This high-quality down is enclosed in a three-dimensional pattern that follows the lines of the body without any waste, but what is particularly noteworthy here is the gathers in the underarm area (see photo below). This allows the jacket to fit the body perfectly, eliminating any excess space between the skin and the garment, preventing body heat from escaping and successfully achieving both comfortable warmth and an excellent, lean fit

Furthermore, the high collar and stretch material around the sleeves and hem are designed to trap body heat, and the garment has been carefully designed to retain as little heat as possible (so that you don't feel cold) despite its limited weight (see photo below)

This ideal fit not only keeps you warm, but also makes layering easy: There's plenty of room inside the jacket for a base layer or a light fleece, and it also fits easily under a shell or thick insulation

Layering is not a problem, as long as you don't wear it over a shell, such as directly over a base layer or as an additional layer over a light mid-layer

Ample pockets, thumb holes, and packable design. Stripped down to the bare minimum, yet still easy to use

Although many features have been omitted to reduce weight, all of the features included are well-thought-out and practical

In particular, the pockets include hand pockets on both sides as well as a chest pocket (all with zippers), and it is not impossible to use the pocket lining as an inner pocket

By the way, the inner pocket here is packable, so you can roll it up and store it by turning it inside out and pushing the entire thing in (see photo below)

For those who want to stay light and cool outdoors in cold weather, the HELIOS DUVET JACKET is an easy-to-use all-around mid-layer

The HELIOS DUVET JACKET is packed with maximum warmth and functionality in a lightweight package , making it the perfect mid-layer for those looking for a lightweight, lightweight solution for mountain hiking.

However, it is a little thin for extremely cold climates and is not durable enough to be worn safely as an outer layer while on the move, so other options are safer for long periods of activity during the harsh winter

Carrying it around to protect you from sudden cold weather or as an extra layer of warmth during rest periods is a great match for a wide range of activities in winter, when the temperature difference is extreme, and it's also useful when you need a slightly thicker layer for travel or snow camping. It will provide ideal warmth and comfort in a wide range of situations, from everyday life to outdoor activities

the HELIOS DUVET strengths are its light weight and compactness , the SKILL DUVET 's greatest appeal lies in its outstanding insulation performance and comfortable fit. I've found it so comfortable to wear that I can say I've never found a down jacket that's as relaxing as this one.

The jacket pattern itself is a regular fit and not particularly tight, but as soon as you put it on, you'll notice a snug, comfortable feeling you've never felt before

The moment you close the front zipper, your entire body is gently enveloped in warmth, and the clever three-dimensional cutting allows you to move freely without feeling any stress. It feels so comfortable against your skin that you will feel as if you have become a feathered animal

Gathered seams for a gentle fit

The secret to this snug fit is the "gathered" structure applied to the body, arms, hood, etc. The elasticity of the gathers along the baffle seams allows the garment to gently adhere to the skin of people of all body types (see photo below)

In addition to the gathered structure that fills the gap between the skin and the clothing, the three-dimensional cutting that takes movement into consideration also works well, allowing for stress-free movement while maintaining a comfortable fit around the upper body

This versatile, easy-to-fit design ensures a comfortable fit whether you wear a thin base layer underneath the jacket or over a hard shell, making it a great choice for layering

The base filling is made of 750FP pure white duck down (treated with NIKWAX water repellent), which not only provides high insulation per weight, but also creates spacious lofts in each of the down chambers, allowing it to expand without hindering growth, enveloping your body in comfortable warmth without any gaps

The inner seams are gathered to fit snugly against the body, preventing any gaps between the jacket and the skin

Highly practical, with moisture-resistant, water-repellent down and synthetic cotton mapped to areas prone to getting wet

High insulation is a waste if it doesn't perform at 100% in the field. This model is designed to withstand the various challenges encountered in snowy mountains during the harsh winter, and incorporates ingenious features not found in a simple down jacket. One of these is the hybrid construction with synthetic fiber (see photo below)

The padding around the shoulders is not down, but high-quality synthetic cotton that is resistant to moisture and wetness

Specifically, the aim is to further cover the weak points of down jackets by incorporating Comfortem® synthetic padding, which retains its insulating properties even when wet, in the "yoke" (an area that is prone to getting wet and humid). Although it is synthetic padding, it is sufficiently bulky and comfortable, and is practically indistinguishable from down, so I hardly noticed any drawbacks from this feature

The hood fits snugly, and there are thumb holes and large pockets, making it a smart and user-friendly item

The cuffs the HELIOS DUVET series, which are handy for preventing cold air from getting in and the jacket from riding up (see photo below). The hood, an essential part of any outerwear, is made of stretch material and gathered around the edges for a comfortable, snug fit, and it follows the movement of your head effortlessly.

As for pockets, I'm a little disappointed that it doesn't have a chest pocket, which I like, but on the other hand, there are zipper hand pockets on both sides, as well as a Velcro-fastened inner pocket large enough to hold gloves, so there's no inconvenience in terms of storage. This inner pocket is also packable, so you can turn it inside out, roll it up, and use it as a storage bag

The SKILL DUVET is made with high-quality down and a highly thermally efficient construction that provides outstanding insulation and comfort while keeping excess weight to a minimum. What was particularly impressive was the meticulous construction, which seems to have been carefully selected to combine the warmth and functionality needed to withstand the harshness of high mountain winter

Because it prioritizes insulation over lightness, it's not ideal for those who want to travel light and fast, but it's sure to be a highly practical choice for hikers, climbers, and skiers who want warmth without worrying too much about carrying extra baggage. Its versatility means it can function as both a mid-layer layer over a base layer and an over-jacket over a shell, making it suitable for a wide range of winter sports
