[A self-paying review without any consideration] Black Diamond Distance 22 A masterpiece of hybrid backpacks that is great for both runs and hiking has been updated. This time you can even enjoy staying in a tent!
I've started discord
The Black Diamond Distance Series is a compact, lightweight hybrid backpack that combines the features of a lightweight vest-style running pack with the durability of a mountaineering backpack. The first model received rave reviews, with many calling it the "best gear of the season." Its stunning quality, which seemed to distill the benefits of both, was so impressive that we even gave it our stamp of approval as the best fast-hiking pack on this website.
the beloved Distance series , and it has finally been updated to its second generation. The first major change that caught our eye in the second generation lineup was the addition of a women's model and a larger 22L size in addition to the traditional 4L, 8L, and 15L sizes. This is a long-awaited evolution for day hikers like me who carry a lot of luggage and a camera, or for campers who like to walk easily and quickly while camping!
we will be reviewing the Distance 22 , a large-capacity model in the newly updated Distance series

Black Diamond Distance 22:
Based on a vest-style running pack, the Distance Series running pack is packed with features for climbing, scrambling, fast hiking, and more, making it a perfect fit for today's light and fast activities. Now updated to its second generation, the new Distance Series packs include a 22-liter size that's perfect for ultralight tent camping. The integrated shoulder harness, which fits snugly from the back to the sides, offers more storage options than the previous model, making it even easier to access your gear while on the move. Continuing on from the previous model, this backpack boasts durable fabric that can withstand the toughest activities and a wealth of functionality, making it a highly refined backpack perfect for fast-paced mountain climbing and hiking
Favorite points
- Convenient external storage that keeps everything you need neatly in place and easily accessible
- Pole attachment system for quick and secure fastening without removing the pack
- Comfortable fit thanks to the shoulder harness that doesn't get in the way and the stretch mesh on the sides
- Side compression straps prevent baggage even when carrying a small load
- Ultra-lightweight and durable fabric
- High versatility, covering everything from mountain running to lightweight tent hiking and fast climbing
Interesting points
- The cushioning of the shoulder straps is a little poor considering the 22 liter capacity
- The shoulder harness has stretch mesh under the armpits, so you can't adjust the tightness depending on the situation (you can't make it tighter)
- The rain cover structure makes it seem like water will seep in from the top if it rains

Detailed review
Comfort, mobility, and durability: A more refined backpack structure while still maintaining its lightweight, comfortable, and robust construction
the new Distance 22 the previous Distance 15 , with a simple and clean front, a vest-style shoulder harness on the back, and simple sides with only compression straps. However, the big difference is the incorporation of a black stretch mesh pocket across the entire front, and the fact that it is designed with UL hiking packs in mind, rather than the 15L sizes intended for trail running, is a very welcome change.
Like the previous model, the back panel uses the BD.dry™ vapor barrier back panel, which features breathable mesh and a lightweight foam panel with light cushioning to allow moisture to escape while preventing moisture from entering the inside of the bag
Like the previous model, the main fabric is a unique ripstop nylon fabric made from a grid-like blend of lightweight, highly durable UHWMPE fibers, which have a tear strength per weight 10 times that of steel, ensuring strength to withstand heavy use in tough environments
The rain cover is designed so that you simply fasten the flap that extends from the outer fabric with a hook after closing the drawstring bag in the main storage. This wasn't a big problem for a small capacity day trip, but when considering the 22 liter capacity, I am a little concerned about water seepage if I go into the mountains for a long period of time, such as camping in a tent
A shoulder harness that maintains the same high level of fit while also improving usability
The previous model's shoulder harness was designed so that the main body and harness were connected at the side by shock cord, but in the latest model, this has been changed to stretch mesh (photo below)
To be honest, I loved the feature of the previous model that allowed you to adjust the fit to your liking by tightening the shock cord. This allowed me to frequently adjust the tightness depending on the situation throughout the day, such as the amount of luggage I was carrying or the amount of climbing and descending I was doing. To be honest, I feel a little disappointed that this flexibility has been reduced in the latest model
However, the latest model still offers the same comfortable fit by adjusting the tightness of the chest strap. The wide shoulder harness, which utilizes "stitchless edge taping technology" to eliminate any rough seams, hugs the body flexibly, enveloping it, and provides excellent stability and prevents the pack from shaking even during dynamic movements
However, while it is possible to adjust the tightness somewhat, it is true that the degree of freedom in fitting has decreased relatively compared to the previous model, and although it may be satisfactory under normal circumstances, it is hard to say that it is completely secure when carrying a lot of luggage or going at high speeds. In that sense, it is important to note that the selection of sizes (S/M/L) at the time of purchase has become more stringent

Of the two chest straps, the lower one is made of elastic, and by adjusting the tightness of this strap, you can achieve a comfortable fit that prevents the device from bouncing up or moving
On the other hand, there are certainly some areas that can be said to have been clearly improved with the latest specifications. One is that the side can now be used as a stash pocket, which greatly improves usability. It's perfect for storing large gel packs (see below)
Storage and functionality: Advanced storage that allows you to keep everything you need within reach
Another big change from the previous model, and one that I personally found particularly appealing, is the improved storage capacity (usability), including the revised shoulder harness pockets. Now, more than ever before, you can place just the right amount of what you need within easy reach while on the move
As shown in the photo below, the new Distance 22 shoulder harness has a total of eight pockets arranged symmetrically on both sides, each with a different size and opening to accommodate a variety of items. With this much storage, it's safe to say that you'll rarely need to open the main compartment of the pack while on the move
1. Soft flask pocket
The soft flask pocket is now even deeper than before and can hold not only BD's dedicated soft flask (500ml), but also Salomon's 500ml tall flask and a 500ml PET bottle when tested (note that wide, short soft flasks will not fit)
② Shoulder belt zipper pocket
The spacious zippered pocket is perfect for storing items that shouldn't fall out, such as a smartphone. The stretchy fabric allowed for ample storage, even with a soft flask inside
③Shoulder belt stretch pocket
Further forward than ① and ② is a wide, gusseted pocket. This is the largest pocket in terms of space, and can hold not only food and hand towels, but also small soft flasks and lightweight wind shells. Incidentally, the left pocket has a whistle inside
④Side stash pocket
As mentioned earlier, a new pocket has been added to the stretch mesh that connects the harness to the main body. It is spacious enough to prevent items from falling out, so you can store gels, garbage bags, and even an ultra-lightweight shell
A new trekking pole fastening system that is easy and secure
There are two proposed ways to carry poles in this pack, including a new method. First, what remains the same as the previous model is the pole storage sleeves on the left and right sides of the main body (see photo below). Basically, any compact tri-fold pole should fit, even if it's not made by BD
This method may be easy to take out once you get used to it, but storing it away can be difficult, and it can be a hassle for people with stiff muscles. So another excellent feature is the newly installed carry system, which makes it easy to take out and store while on the move (see photo below)
How it works is that you first pass each end of the pole through a rubber loop. Each loop is connected to your shoulder and flank with a shock cord, so you can still keep the pole in place in front of your chest (see photo below)
Next, push the pole connected to the loop behind your back (passing it under your face), and tighten the shock cord at the shoulders to secure it snugly to the backpack (see video below)
This completes the setup and you can start riding right away. It's easy to operate and once set up, it's fixed to the back so it doesn't get in the way of your movements. It's well thought out in many ways
The ease of use that was previously available remains almost the same
The access to the interior is also very simple. If you remove the hook and hold both ends and pull it, it will open completely. Rather than instantaneous, you can open it at the same time by opening the lid.
The compression cords on both sides allow you to compress the pack without it getting too bulky, even when you're not carrying much luggage (you can also use them to hold removed clothing)
The large stretch mesh pocket on the front has enough space to store rain gear, food, sandals, a water filter, or anything else you can think of
The inside of the main unit also comes with a zippered mesh pocket and a deep pocket for storing hydration packs. It is best to put valuables in a zippered pocket.
Summary: A versatile backpack that can be used for both running and hiking, with the possibility of camping in a tent in mind
The popular hybrid backpack has been updated with a new size the Distance 22. Its capacity and features make it an appealing choice for fast hikers and FKT-style UL hikers who seek to fully explore the backpack's core concepts of "speed" and "toughness." Its streamlined, lightweight design offers a comfortable fit and enhanced storage and usability. While it's primarily designed for trail running and speed hiking, its versatility makes it suitable for regular hiking and mountaineering, making it a versatile backpack that's not just for athletes. It's perfect for today's ambitious mountaineers, whether they're doing trail running in the spring, mountaineering in the summer, thru-hiking in the fall, or ice climbing in the winter.
