[A self-paying review without any consideration] These are mountaineering shoes that you can wear. MAMMUT Ducan BOA® High GTX Review of the next generation trekking shoes that have evolved even further.
Among the mountaineering equipment, shoes are something that can be said to never start without all that. Especially the longer the distance, such as through hiking and full-scale traverse, and the larger the luggage, the more important it becomes.
In the past, these mountaineering boots were mainly made from solid, heavy leather-covered climbing boots so that they could withstand large loads and impacts, but it's now much less common to see these classic boots in the mountains. In recent years, despite the heavy loads of traversing, trekking boots with the lightness of running shoes have been replacing them.
One of the models at the forefront of high-tech mountaineering boots the Ducan Knit High GTX, which first appeared two years ago by MAMMUT . This shocking pairing combines the comfort and ease of walking with the stability and durability of trekking boots, I still remember choosing my perfect choice for my personal Gear Of the Year that year.
The MAMMUT Ducan BOA® High GTX , the latest technical hiking shoes that will be positioned as their successor this season, has been released. This boot is a cutting edge in modern mountain shoe trends, carrying on the legacy of the previous model and evolving it in a more active direction (by the way, it was awarded the Award at ISPO, Europe's largest outdoor equipment trade fair in 2021).
Of course, I've been getting it quickly as an Outdoor Gearzine and have been wearing it for the past few months, but to put it first, it was just amazing how it felt to imagine, saying, "I can run! I can carry it on my back!"
We'll take a look at the appeal and interesting points of these boots that I learned after carefully wearing them this summer, comparing them to their previous model.

Main features of the MAMMUT Ducan BOA® High GTX
The MAMMUT Ducan BOA® High GTX is a technical hiking shoe that combines a three-dimensional pattern design that suits your body's movements and posture, with moderately stretchable 3D knit material, and the new BOA® Shoe Racing System, providing an unprecedented fit and comfortable fit. The original midsole "Flextron Technology" that has been developed since the previous model supports natural movement of the foot, reducing fatigue, while allowing for even more stable landing and stepping on. The outsole uses a Vibram® Flextron outsole that combines reliable grip and good mud removal. Combining the latest technology and stylish design, this next-generation trekking boot is perfect for active and sporty mountain activities such as fast packing, speed hiking, and trekking.
This is ◎
- The ultimate fit
- It has solid protection, yet lightweight, easy to move around, and light
- MAMMUT Flextron Technology™ makes walking easier and fatigue-free
- High grip thanks to the Vibram sole and calculated lug shape
- Highly waterproof due to the boots being close to the ankle
I'm curious about this
- While it's easy to walk in, the shank is not that hard to use as an alpine boot
- While the ankle mobility has been improved compared to the previous model, the ankle support is not as high as the previous model (be careful when traversing under heavy loads).

Detailed review
It's so light you can't imagine it from the looks of it!
The first thing that really struck me with these boots is how light it felt when I picked it up. At first glance, it looks like a normal high-cut mountain boot, the midsole is thick, and the surroundings are reinforced, so you can imagine it being quite heavy when you bring it. But this is surprisingly light. When I have my friends carry these shoes, I usually say, "Oh, light!"
When I measured it, it was a UK 8.5 size and weighed 521g (right on the photo below). Generally speaking, 500 grams are so light that it's just right for modern, middle-cut lightweight hiking boots, so despite the heavy weight, this weight is just right. By the way, I also measured the previous model (left of the photo below), but it was still nearly 600g (although it's still quite lighter), and considering that it's now lighter by more than 10%, this change cannot be ignored.
The significantly changed appearance combines functionality and design
The appearance has also changed dramatically. Not only has it become a BOA® version from the traditional shoelaces, but the shoelaces (wires) that correspond to the instep have been changed to a design that is covered with elastic fabric. Of course, there are preferences, but the clean, futuristic design fits the concept of this shoe, and personally I don't dislike it. *By the way, I deliberately chose the "white" color this time, but although it is a little less likely to get dirty, I still recommend the white as it is a tough mountain boot, so I recommend the black one. If you wear them normally, they look cool.
Of course, it makes sense not only in terms of design, but also in terms of functionality as it also improves protection of the instep, and protects the wire part to prevent it from getting caught.
The ultimate fit and comfortable fit make you forget the feeling of "wearing" your shoes
After the appearance and specs, let's move on to the impressions of actually wearing them (= the core part of the appeal of these boots).
As has been the case since the previous model, the first feature of this boot is that it has an upper structure that covers the instep, the tongue and the entire ankle with a stretchy knit fabric (photo below).
Naturally, the characteristics of knit fabrics are its "suppleness" and "stretchability." When shoes are made of soft knit fabrics, not only the shoelaces but also the fabric itself will adhere to the feet, giving the entire foot a comfortable feeling as if they were wrapped in moderate pressure.
This time, the BOA® fitting system was installed in place of shoelaces, which has made the perfect wrap-in fit even more impressive.
Even when wearing gloves, you can feel the entire foot tightening with even pressure when you turn the dial, which is easily operated.
The upper material, which is connected by the wires, is also soft, and the tightness of the material is something I've never experienced before, even after wearing a variety of mountaineering boots.
From the ankles to the toes, the comfort of the other side of the body is as if you were wearing socks, and you'll never help but forget that you're wearing shoes. To put it in extreme terms, it's more like wearing it than wearing it.
Of course, this exquisite fit is not something that anyone can do with knit fabric and BOA, but we must not forget that Mammut's unique ergonomics three-dimensional ending and the "Georganic 3D" patterning technology that even measures the posture and movement.
By the way, this knit fabric is waterproof and breathable from GORE-TEX, so not only does it prevent pebbles from entering, but it also keeps it waterproof to a fairly high position, making it safe even on routes where there is a lot of crossing the stream (photo below).
The original midsole is lightweight yet extremely stable!
The midsole is based on the original Flextron Technology, which was first installed in the previous model, and is almost the same construction. detail about the previous model , but this boot with Flextron Technology provides a flexible and light foot movement like a lightweight hiking boot, while also providing a sense of shock absorption and stability when landing, which minimizes shaking and twisting between the left and right sides.
In addition, in the previous model, the shoelaces that were tightened up to the top of the ankles have been adopted, and the use of BOA® has made them ankle height, which also improves ankle mobility. As mentioned above, the weight has been reduced, making it much easier to walk and run overall. Its ride quality is more like hiking shoes than trekking boots.
The last (foot shape) of the three-dimensional design also provides a good hold on the heel. The heels are less likely to float inside the shoes, and the stability and moderate cushioning reduces fatigue to the fullest.
The sufficient protection and grip keeps the feeling of security as always
The protection covering the area around the upper has been changed to a lighter weight due to changes in material. Still, it has sufficient basic durability. You can walk on mountain trails all over Japan without worry. The outsole is also made of Vibram, the same as the previous model, and uses the original Mammut Flextron outsole. I walked all the way, including rough roads, but I didn't find it slippery on almost every terrain, except for mossy rocks, tree roots and wet, smooth rocks.
Summary: Recommended for people like this
Ducan BOA® High GTX has achieved an extraordinary fit from the first model two years ago, and is lighter and easier to walk in, surpassing high expectations, bringing a different impression from the previous model. These hiking boots are "want to wear right now" optimized for the sportier recent mountain activities and are useful for a wide range of mountain treks, from light hiking to speed hiking, fast packing, approaching, and trekking on technical terrain such as rocky areas.
If there's anything you need to be careful about, as pointed out in the previous Ducan Knit High GTX , these boots are made as technical "hiking shoes," and are more refined than alpine boots designed for long-term traversing on rocky surfaces or heavy loads. If your weight exceeds that limit, people with low legs may notice a sign of shaking and fatigue when landing. This trend is stronger than the previous model. In terms of nuance, you can see that the previous model, which was a "light climbing boot" has been slightly adjusted to a new model, into a "comfortable and stable hiking boots."
If you're looking to equip yourself with cutting-edge fitting technology and safety in outdoor shoes, be sure to check out these boots. So have a safe and good journey.
