Review: SmartWool Merino Wool NTS Micro 150 Crew
table of contents
Once you wear it, you won't want to let it go. A masterpiece that everyone should try
introduced icebreaker's merino wool as the base layer I wear the most, including for everyday use . However, if I were asked to choose the best base layer for outdoor wear, I'd probably choose this long-sleeved jacket. SmartWool is a comparable base layer to icebreaker in that it's made of 100% merino wool, but when you compare them, you can see the differences in comfort, ease of movement, and heat retention, and ultimately this one is slightly better. I'd like to review them in detail below, looking at the differences between them.

This is amazing!
The first thing I noticed was its excellent temperature regulation. I tried out various other models, and even though this model is the thinnest and lightest (150g/m2), it maintained warmth comparable to icebreaker's merino wool (200g/m2) . And while icebreaker weighs an impressive 190g, SmartWool is surprisingly light at just 150g. For functionality required for outdoor activities, there's no better advantage than this. And among the many merino wools available, this one seemed particularly resistant to the summer heat (it also wicks away sweat well). Of course, this isn't as good as synthetic fibers.
Second, it fits the body perfectly and allows for easy movement. The shape is similar to that of the Icebreaker, with a natural fit similar to a cut-and-sew top, without the clingy feel that mountain base layers often have (the ib is more casual-looking). The cuffs aren't forced to close, and the fit and feel are more like everyday clothing, so it's perfectly fine for everyday winter wear. Incidentally, the ones worn by foreign models online look overly tight, but unless you're incredibly muscular, it won't be that tight, lol. Plus, the 150/m2 yarn gives it a smooth, gentle feel. It also has excellent stretch, allowing for full upper body movement without resistance, so even intense movements feel completely comfortable.
Finally, regarding care, this can be washed with regular mild detergent and even dried in a dryer . To be honest, I've never used it myself, but I feel like the icebreaker shrinks a little bit after washing, but so far I haven't noticed any shrinkage at all with the SmartWool.
This is not good
To be honest, I can't find much that's wrong with this product. It's comfortable to wear all year round, has ample breathability, warmth, and durability, and the design and comfort are great—what else could you ask for? But if I had to say anything negative, the biggest drawback would be the high price. And it's gone up again with the weak yen..
Summary: What kind of activities do you recommend?
I think it's perfect for a wide range of outdoor activities, especially sports. It's also recommended for all seasons. It seems like it could be used for camping, hiking, trekking, climbing, bouldering, water sports like sawago and kayaking, winter sports like skiing, and workouts like running, trail running, and strength training
As usual, I recommend the thinnest size, 150, for layering and ease of mixing and matching, but if you're planning on using it in the harsh winter, you'll want to have a thicker layer as well. If you're a mountain climber and aren't sure where to start, I highly recommend this. It's such an important choice, and there's no hesitation in choosing it. It's definitely a must-have item
