And that's not all: the three-layer fabric offers exceptional comfort and breathability, even when sweating. Compared to a 2.5-layer jacket, its superior comfort is clear. Its color palette, which blends in with the cityscape, and its relatively affordable price make it a perfect first jacket

Last year's most surprising product was the lightweight waterproof and breathable shell, weighing just 85g, which is probably the lightest in the world. There are no spec changes this season, but it still seems to hold its own
But what I personally love most about this jacket is the lack of friction (crunchiness) that's uncommon for a rain jacket. It feels like wearing a windbreaker, which makes it incredibly comfortable for running. While there are many aspects that make it seem inferior, such as its mediocre waterproof and breathable specifications, 2.5-layer fabric construction, and the lack of pockets, it's these aspects that make it a unique piece that exudes a one-of-a-kind presence
MONTANE MINIMUS 777 JACKET (or MINIMUS 777 PULL-ON)

This is Montane's lightest waterproof shell, made with Pertex® Shield +3-layer, a new material introduced this season. Not only is it over 100g lighter than last year's lightest model, the Minimus Jacket , but the three-layer construction provides a supple, smooth lining and excellent breathability when sweating. 3-layer construction is truly great!
The three-dimensional cut of the arms, which ensures high mobility when running and climbing, is a Montane specialty, and it's still as great as ever. So far, it's light, protective, comfortable, and easy to move in, but don't forget that the pockets, hood, hem, and sleeves have been simplified to the extreme. As for use, it's best suited for fastpacking, trail running, or as an emergency bag, where lightness is more important than ease of use
By the way, if you plan to use it as an emergency cover when hiking, etc., you should choose the jacket type, and if you plan to use it actively on sunny days as a wind shell when running, you should choose the pullover type.However, if you are unsure, the jacket is more versatile and recommended

It seems that not only this model, but also any other model, a weight in the low 100g range, excellent waterproof and breathable properties, and 3-layer construction will be the benchmark for specs this season
Also, while the 3-layer PertexⓇ Shield+ is being used by several manufacturers this season, perhaps due to the lack of strictness on the part of the material manufacturer, the construction of the fabric is slightly different from that of MONTANE and Rab. In the case of Mammut, the outer fabric is not too smooth, and the entire fabric is very thin and flexible, which I personally find comfortable. The slim width and sleeves (which are still considered a regular fit) that are characteristic of Mammut are also stylish and leave a good impression

MHW's trail running-specific model is one of the many additions to their 2016 lineup of lightweight waterproof and breathable shells. Developed in collaboration with trail runner Shunsuke Okumiya, this rain shell is packed with the kind of "ahaha" features that can only come from the feedback of an experienced runner
First of all, the weight (271g) isn't particularly light, but the choice of material (3-layer stretch, 40D thickness) strikes a good balance between mobility and protection, rather than simply focusing on lightness, and is certainly worth it in a sense. The jacket also features mesh pockets on both sides for storing gels, one-handed hood and hem adjusters, and a pocket for an electronic device inside the hand pocket, all of which are designed with the user in mind
Teton Bros. Breath Jacket

Until now, Teton Bros. had the world's lightest rain jacket, the Tsurugi Lite Jacket, which uses Neoshell, but this one beats that record at just 218g. By narrowing down the use, we have minimized the number of pockets, zippers, and adjusters, further reducing the weight to the utmost
While the high breathability provided by Neoshell remains unchanged, this model also features a diagonal front zipper and underarm slit ventilation to create airflow and further enhance breathability, making it easier to use during activities that produce more sweat

As everyone knows, Montbell has long offered several options for lightweight waterproof and breathable shells. Of these, the Torrent Flyer Jacket is more of an all-around jacket, so we chose the Versalite Jacket, which pursues ultimate lightness and is therefore more suitable for "light and fast" activities.
This 168g 2.5-layer jacket, made with Montbell's proprietary Super Hydro Breeze material, was exceptionally light when it was first released, but now it's more of a mid-range jacket. The left and right hand pockets and Velcro adjustments on the cuffs are based on mountaineering rainwear, and are very conventional in design, so nothing stands out. But above all, the appeal of this garment is its value for money, with all those basic features. Even beginners who choose it without much thought will likely not regret it, and this sense of security is, in a sense, Montbell's greatest strength
Marmot ZERO STORM Jacket

When it was released last year, its sheer lightness honestly made me skeptical of its capabilities, but this year, its specs seem average, which is strange. It's a testament to the fact that other manufacturers have been unable to catch up this year. Looking at it from a bird's-eye view, the fact that it's so light yet isn't specifically designed for running is actually a positive. The three-dimensional cut allows for easy movement, the hand pockets are secure on both sides, the chin cover is deep, and the hood is easily adjustable. It's perfectly suited to all outdoor activities in mild climates, from being used as an outer layer on sunny days to acting as a waterproof shell in case of sudden downpours
